37 years??? That's BIZARRE to say the least. I'm not a law expert, but I think the we've seen guys like the father that point blank range killed a teen and he's up for 15 years I believe? I've also read about rapest, cvhild molesters getting under ten year sentences...

If the 37 years is accurate that is disgusting.

Wow.... A minumum of 30yrs., I bet this jerk had no friggin idea. He figured he would hire two goons and torch the empty shop. Now, he's looking at 37yrs.. Guess he never heard of researching.

I agree, this sounds outrageous. I kind of recall the story when it broke. Was anyone injured? I don't recall that anyone was. Newsday doesn't even tell.Unbeleivable.

It's just that the penalties for the other crimes, like murder and rape are too LIENIENT.

This man destroyed a building; put peoples lives in jeopardy; Destroyed someones livelihood, etc.-and if he can commit such a horric crime...hardly a "beginners" crime, imagine what he's done that he's never been caught or convicted on!

He may be facing 37 years, but years of experience in federal court has taught me that virtually nobody gets the maximum possible sentence. With federal sentencing guidelines, he'll probably get a lot less time than the maximum under the statutes. That being said, firebombing is a serious crime that puts lives in danger, be they tenants, firefighters, or anybody else unfortunate enough to be around when the crime is committed.

Re-read the article. There is a mandatory sentence of at least 37 years. In Federal prison, you must serve at least 85 percent of your time, too.

No one got hurt. The crime was done to an empty place and there was no chance of danger to anyone with the incredibly rare exception of a firefighter getting injured in soemthing like this.

It is incredibly unjust aqnd I wouldn't be surprised if it gets over turned on appeal. laws need to be changed fast.

This was not a tiny mistake. He destroyed someone's business, he ruined people's jobs, he put lives in danger.. Neighboring businesses could have easily gone up in flames as well.(His own lawyer states that his bar was damaged)

37 years sounds about right to me. If an idiot can be so dumb as to burn down the store next to his and sophisticated in criminal ways enough to hire someone else to do it, he doesn't need to be out there among society.

You all have my permission to lobby for more stringent minimum sentences for rape and murder.
