My family and I also experienced the grasshopper invasion from the water to the beach and onto us and everything around us...cannot wait to find out what the story is about the grasshoppers. We have been coming to Ocean City for 32 years and have never seen this happen before.

The grasshoppers invaded Bethany Beach as well. I too had never seen such a thing in all my 30 years here. I'm curious to know what the story is on them.

My family also experienced the "grasshopper invasion". We were on 56th street in OC. I also have been going to the beach 30+ years and have never seen this. I haven't heard a peep from the media on this bizarre occurrence. At least we didn't have the jellyfish this year which are always present by this time.

My family and I were on Bethany Beaches last week
we also experienced the multitude of grasshoppers on the beach as well as in the ocean-have been checking the internet to see if there was an explaination for this unusual occurrence...so far we have not be able to come up with an explaination...We were on the beach on Friday 8/1
Are the grasshoppers still present on the beach?????

I read on another forum that a Delaware lifeguard reported that many of the lifeguards felt sick after swimming in the ocean the day of the grasshopper "invasion"(fri. aug 1). Reported flu like symtoms...my family and I were in the water that day, but we did not get sick. Just wondered if anyone else might have gotten ill..

Between the fog and the grasshoppers, OC Md was like something out of the movies. Stranger was the fact we walked the beach in the morning on Friday and nothing...came back down after lunch and there they were!!! creepy...If anyone finds logical explanation I would be curious to know why.

I googled "Bethany beach, grasshoppers" and I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one that is interested to find out what was going on last week. Strangest thing I've ever seen.

We, too, experienced "Friday Grasshoppers on the Ocean City Beach" at 91st Street... thousands of them...

How about the ocean fogs earlier in the week on the Ocean City beach several days earlier?

Nice to see we weren't the only family that encountered the invasion of the grasshoppers. Not in 30+ years have we seen what happened Friday. But the fog, cold ocean temps and grasshoppers couldn't keep our families from having a terrific week!

Since posting my comment this morning, I've googled and found a few more postings, some as far as Myrtle Beach. Come on, this has got to be a story worthy of the media to report on.

It was truly bizarre!! I've been coming to the beach for 35 years and have never seen it. I know friends at 44th St had them as did we on 126th. Obviously, there's an explanation. I can't believe the local news did not pick it up.

I have been searching the web looking for an answer too. Please post if anyone finds something. Really curious.
Saw one theory that the wind carried them from nearby fields, but not sure that makes much sense.

I am starting to really think they came from Bermuda- they came in from the water not land and I found a link below from nasa tracking birds migration in Bermuda and a swarm of grasshoppers- it was posted on 7/30. The Baltimroe sun papers mentioned it, but not as news but in a blog. I emailed the guy and he mentioned there were strong northerly and northwesterly winds- which could make sense if they came from bermuda!!!!

I WAS THERE AND STILL HAVEN'T FOUND AN EXPLANATION OF WHERE THEY CAME FROM. THERE WERE SO MANY OF THEM AND THEY DEFINITELY WERE COMING FROM THE WATER. THEY ALSO WERE THE LARGEST GRASSHOPPERS I HAVE EVER SEEN!
CAN ANYONE TELL ME WHERE THEY CAME FROM, WHAT THEY WERE DOING IN THE WATER, ANY EXPLANATION OF IT? HAS IT HAPPENED BEFORE? VERY STRANGE AND I WOULD LOVE TO KNOW MORE!

What a strange week in Ocean city Md.. 45 mph winds on Sunday. Fog on Monday until noon, and Wednesday all day. It was so thick, the lifeguards had to walk the beach because visability was less than 100 yards.
Thursday there were the biting flies.
The strangest day was Friday. The grasshoppers comming out of the water. Thousands of them. They washed ashore, dried off then hopped inland. We were at 141st St. I asked several lifelong residents, and none had seen anything like it before. Still it was a great vacation, and one that will be remebered for a long time.
