Curious pay respects to felled 'Spindle'

“When they first put it up I thought it was stupid”

They drove slowly through the parking lot Saturday. Some took photographs. Others just stared in apparent disbelief, lamenting the loss of Berwyn's most famous pop icon. via Chicago Tribune

I could see if felling it served some loftier purpose, like the building of a clinic or something with more meaning. But, c'mon...a Walgreens? Aren't there already a million of them around? But I guess we can't fight big business. Psh.

President Obama would have saved the Spindle. If only he could have been elected sooner.

With a sales tax of 9% in Berwyn, I wouldn't shop there anyway.

Berwyn, where your already sagging dollar is only worth 91 cents.

We were there two weeks ago, and took pictures with the kids.

Nice Memories.

A lower bid for the artwork may have worked out after all.

I'm sure it will be replaced by a huge Mexican flag or something so i fits in with the rest of Cermak.
Its sad. That plaza has gone to sh!t. The few art sculptures left are rusty and falling apart. And now when Walgreens moves, we will have the anchor storefront empty to go along with "Service Merchandise". When did they close their doors? 1992???
Dude, there are more shoplifting convictions in the plaza per day than actual transactions. Its really sad to see what has happened to my town. I grew up being open-minded, but now, I totally understand the racists that I once despised, as I have had my neighborhood stolen from me. And you cannot blame us for bringing gangs, drug dealers, Link cards, litter, shootings, stabbings, and the overabundance of unwed mothers here to our average blue collar town.
We built'em, you bust'em. That is why we hate minorities, its too bad you give a bad name to your race because a lot of you are great. I wish Cermak and Ogden didn't run through our town, as then you dumb@sses never would have found us.
And I'm one of those great ones you speak of!! Even though there are at least to goofs here who say I'm not. These goofs say spend more money on the schools. WTF??? Anyway I'm hispanic and I along with many of us Mexicans & Puerto Ricans agree with you. We didn't march May 1st to legalize the aliens.

It's worse than that -- there is *already* a Walgreens at that very strip mall. They tore the Spindle down to make way for second drive-through Walgreens.

Beyond ridiculous.

Can someone who was there for the destruction of the sculpture explain how the top two cars were plucked off without damaging them?

Very sad.

Too bad they didn't do more to protect against deterioration, sooner. Maybe it could have stayed there forever if it was better cared for?

But then, I guess cars weren't made to last 'forever'.

ps Check out Dustin Schuler online.

Tho this work was not appreciated by all, he's a very interesting artist who people should know more about.

Despite the opinions of snobby locals, he wasn't just a nobody who plunked a bunch of cars together.

Check it out!

Seen it. It's about as interesting as a canvas with a dot on it. But I'm not an artist.
