Adopted girl faces deportation
“We don't have the means to do that”
"I am writing to you because I need your help. I am trying to tell the American public the nightmare my 7-year-old adopted daughter is going through with the immigration authorities." This is how Joseph Collar, ... via New York Daily News

The ICE man cometh and his heart is cold. Oh, but most will say this is a sob story and only a "bleeding heart liberal" would see it as a problem.

What I find full of BS is his statement that "we don't have the means to do that" yet, he's the CONTROLLER a corporation. I would say he's got "the means" but he doesn't have the "will".
It seems that immigration proves difficult for SOME, but not ALL if it's truly desired. |

If she is legally adopted, why does she need a green card?
There must be more to this story than has been published. I am adopted and all rights given to natural children are also given to adopted children. |
|
USA Today, you are being too strict. This really sucks, why cannot American citizens adopt illegal children? Amreicans can adopt foreign children from overseas and after one year they automatically become US citizens. Why not the same for illegal children abandoned in the USA? This also might make it easier for many illegal parents to decide to leave the USA.
What gets me is ICE, here they have 600,000 adult illegal alien criminals on the loose in the USA, and instead they go after an adopted child. |

The problem with Immigration today is not the goverment...it's the IMMIGRATION ATTORNEYS...this child was in the country ILLEGALLY...it's great that they adopted her...now...take her home to guatamala...who says they have to continue to live here

Well I am not a bleeding heart liberal and I take afront at this situation. That little girl should have been given legal status along with the adoption. However, her illegal entry into the country via her mother is going to put up brick walls at every turn with the current laws.

My thoughts too. Maybe there is more to this story though. |
Why can't Americans adopt AMERICAN children???? There is no need to go out of this country to adopt |

I think that's a personal choice. This little girl's biological mother is the niece of the adoptive mother according to the story. I see nothing wrong with that. I remember when it was quite common for Americans to be adopting Korean children for instance. My half-sister was put up for adoption by my mother; she was adopted and is all-American. Different strokes for different folks I say. |

Joseph and Cathy should take their US riches with the girl to Guatamala and raise here there, problem solved.
Allow this illegal alien child to be abandoned here in the US and allowed to stay and this will be the next wave of illegals we will see here, ie illegal alien parents dumping and abandoning their children on US soil. |

They are both U.S. citizens who adopted the girl. No one was suggesting the child be abandoned here; they simply wanted her to be allowed to get a green card. |

We must have more information on this before talking silly.
Is the real mother or father fighting for rights? Either this is a madeup story for pity,I cannot understand why this child is not considered a citizen by adoption. My cousin was adopted from Sweden and she has never had this problem. |

Our inept gov't. at work, again. There should be no question about this little girl staying. She has been adopted.

Certain countries have strict policies against foreigners in foreign countries adopting their children. I wonder if that's the case here. One reason people go to certain countries is that those countries have very lax standards and let anyone come in and take their orphans. Something isn't legitimate with this adoption. |

Do you see any problem right off the bat with this story? "Collar and his wife, Cathy, 62, also a U.S. citizen, are not glamorous celebrities like, say, Madonna or Angelina Jolie." Well -- for one -- is this older couple adopting children from the same countries as Madonna and Angelina? And -- even with their celebrity status, they didn't just go into just any country and take a child. Mexico for example does not put up Mexican children for foreign adoption very easily. I don't believe the USA does either. And -- many countries are very sure to make sure the biological mother has clearly given up her rights. This article only talks about a mother supposedly abandoning the child -- there's nothing about the mother going to a lawyer to relinquish her parental rights to this child. |

How come this couple have not called ICE to arrest, and deport the drug-addicted niece who abandoned that girl? So when the girl is 18 then the mother will appear and the girl can claim her? And all of the sudden all these people don't have any family left in their countries? No grand-parents? I suppose a mother of a 7 year old girl is pretty young, and her parents already died? All illegals say that they have no one in their countries. What happened to all those numerous families in those countries? They went into the river?

I agree. There do seem to be some missing puzzle pieces. The couple is older yes; they have 4 grown children. This little girl is supposedly the daughter of her adoptive mother's niece. So there is a family connection. She is also from Guatemala. I don't know what the laws are regarding adoption of foreign born children. The couple claims she was abandoned and her mother is a drug user. Now at the risk of exposing too much, I will share this: My grandmother raised me after my mother abandoned when I was 9. My grandmother was never able to legally adopt me because my mother wouldn't permit it, so my grandmother was just my legal guardian. The mother in this case, like you suggested, may not be willing to give up her legal rights. Interesting story as far as it goes though. |

Here's what the article stated: "The Collars legally adopted Neidy in New Jersey in 2004, but all their efforts to have their daughter become a legal resident of the U.S. have crashed against a wall of blind inflexibility." I was confused about the adoption part. It seems if a baby can become an automatic citizen by being born here, why wouldn't a child who has been legally adopted by legal U.S. citizens be eligible to be a citizen? Very confusing. I need Molon for research. LOL! |

Deportation is the answer! The sooner the better.
