Sounds like common sense. What objections can anyone have to this?

"We believe it is the job for the INS and the federal government," said City Manager Michael Frank.

Then:

"It is terrible timing," Mayor Jeanne MacLeamy said of the immigration issue. "We should not be distracted by anything right now."

Perhaps the citizens of Novato need to remind Frank and MacLeamy what is written in The California Penal Code, Section 834B section (c) which states the following:

(c) Any legislative, administrative, or other action by a city,
county, or other legally authorized local governmental entity with
jurisdictional boundaries, or by a law enforcement agency, to prevent
or limit the cooperation required by subdivision (a) is EXPRESSLY PROHIBITED.

What does section (a) state?

(a) Every law enforcement agency in California shall fully
cooperate with the United States Immigration and Naturalization
Service regarding any person who is arrested if he or she is
suspected of being present in the United States in violation of
federal immigration laws.

Perhaps Frank and MacLeamy should seek new jobs because they are certainly unfit to serve the citizens of Novato. By their statements they brazenly choose to usurp the law. It's time to make them accountable.

Great idea but now the illegals will all just flood San Rafael
City Councils will never approve any law like this unless its full of loopholes as they are afraid of being mau maud by the liberals and open border supporters as being racist

Good idea, I will sign.

Maybe the city should think about special election costs the next time they have one to sneak in tax increases or a bond for the schools.

This issue isn't even close to important in this city right now. They're talking about cutting cops. They're talking about slicing into future pensions. They're talking about laying off three dozen employees. Maybe later this year but not right now. I think the city has it's priorities straight.

When there are no jobs, they go back to their place of origin. That's a fact.

----Exactly!, and I am glad they didn't agree to a 'worthless compromise' with the city of Novato. Politicians don't want to make hard decisions, let the people decide.

Another poorly conceived ballot initiative concocted by a special interest group. As usual, the law of unintended consequences will reign in terms creating additional costs to the tax payers of Novato. At the rate the city of Novato is getting pounded by the economy it won't have any money to hire contractors. Way to go Jerome...always good throw you community under the bus on a matter of principle.

There are about 8 million illegal immigrants with jobs that should be available to the 15 million legal residents without jobs.

Turn off the jobs magnet that draws illegal immigrants to our country in great numbers.

CLEC has more than half of the required signatures. We can do this!

If a complaint was filed with the DA would they be forced/required to pursue it?

If I was a registered Novato voter I would sign the petition. I hope it passes and sets a precedent for the State of California, but most importantly Marin County! The contractors should be ashamed of themselves BUT the homeowners/building owners are the most at fault for letting illegal untrained workers to modify their homes and businesses.

the illegals will just move on down or over to Hayward or Ukiah where half of them live . they are taking away a lot of jobs and living off of welfare . take all of those Anderson blvd street bums off the street and all those by the Uhaul yard . When I want a Uhaul truck ,I do not need some street hustler jumping on the truck for the next time I may run over one if they get in my way. Make all of them get a permit for being a street bum like a fee of $8:00 a day paid daily

Part of "having your priorities straight" as an elected official is abiding by the law, not dismissing it, ignoring it, or at worst, usurping it. There is no excuse. We should be firing elected officials who refuse to do their job, not laying off police officers.

It doesn't cost anything to use the E-Verify system offered by Homeland Security. This is not a ballot initiative from a special interest group. It is a ballot initiative by and for the people. I realize Oakland is already an absolute mess where you live and Novatans aren't willing to see their city go that direction. Your scruples are ass-backwards, pal.

Novato is more on top of it than the rest of Marin.
Novato rejected the SMART train,
Novato rejected the Marin Energy Authority
and now Novato is rejecting all the illegals.

They are leading the way, the rest of marin is slowly following.

It is the board of supervisors who have a special agenda and have caused this mess in Marin. People in Mexico on the streets literally know that they want to go to Marin because the have heard they can get stuff for free and be protected.

Now they risk their lives to get here. Good job liberals!!

Just try to cruise through the business of the day and try to see each situation from the other side. You have to weigh matters up or put something on the scales to see how the balance is. If you have dealings with women of importance or authority, make sure you listen to what's being said, even if you don't like it.
