There's no law against having an unloaded rifle secured in a case in Your vehicle, even in the most hardcore anti-gun States.
A Gunman, is generaly used to define a Person Who is in fact shooting the gun.
So if He had a hatchet in His trunk, what would He be labled by the Media?

And no there is no law against having an unloaded, rifle in a carrying case in Your vehicle, as long as the ammunition is in a secured, locked container, or trunk.
(Some Counties/Cities may have local laws pertaining to firearms in regards to distances to Schools though.)

Now if the Suspect had prior mental health issues, there may an issue with the Suspect actually having said firearm in the first place.
