No, Judge. "Some extent" is not the right term here. Sexual abuse causes lifelong damage that does not show up right away. Just ask any survivor, or therapist who works with survivors of childhood sex abuse. The nightmares, trust problems, terrors, post-traumatic stress symptoms, interference with intimacy, gastrointestinal problems, eating problems, substance abuse problems. These "sleeper effects" are classic.
The fact that Friedlander was not previously convicted or was not a "classic pedophile" will make little difference to the child he attacked. This non-sentence only encourages pedophiles to become predators. After all, there is no real punishment. Fortunately, this child has a mother who pursued the case and a DA who convicted this unclassic pedophile. This little girl was brave enough to speak out at trial, which is helpful in her healing. Her mom probably has her in good therapy, so the worst of the effects of the abuse may be avoided. That does not diminish for a moment the harm done to this precious child.
In addition, there is enormous harm to society. Specifically, the whole Marin community needs to be on alert from this day forward to ensure that an unclassic pedophile is kept far away from children at all times. Who is in prison now? Could not have said it better myself

it hurts to read this sentence, a young girls innocence has been stripped away from her, her life may never be the same because she no longer has a choice. im glad that she was finally able to tell her mom, but when she gets older it will probably scar her that someone who stole something so precious from her only recieved one year jail time....THATS SAD...
