Cannot believe I bothered wrote: Here's what I take trail running on Tam even if I only expect to go 3-4 miles: Water - 1 to 2 500 ml bottles Power Bar type snack Olmstead's map with my edits Tiny first aid kit Cell phone (even though it rarely has a signal) Jogger's pepper spray foil 'space blanket' Swiss Army Knife Small bic lighter Ultra-light rain jacket. Water purification tablets All but the water bottles fit in a small waist pack. You never know when you might slide down into a ravine and break an ankle. Course, you're a responsible adult, not fair now, we here be talking 'bout adult children from Marin who have legendary abilities to Peter-Pan their trust-fund way through life. This lifestyle, plus the wonderful belief that such lifestyles should be instantly afforded to everyone, appealed to so many, they flocked here from all over, even though they had no trust funds, but all of Marin has become a ginormous trust fund for them too! Just think! you can throw all that responsible stuff away, cry like a big baby, and become FAMOUS, they'll even make a movie of the terrible ordeal you suffered, being lost within 15 minutes of your car. Nope, being responsible in Marin makes you one of the dreaded "Haters".

I've got an idea for that movie!! He later goes to a support group for Mt. Tam survivors, meets the guy from the other thread who stumbled down the mountain and hailed a cab, they fall in love, get married, and later on adopt an illegal alien child. No particular reason for that, other than I needed to work illegal aliens into this comment...

I know this man and personally know he is mortified by the news. So I don't think it is fair to say he wants the attention. And there are a lot of half-truths in this article about exactly what he had on him, what his intentions were that day and how prepared he was. He wasn't being careless..he was just used to his usual routine on Mount Diablo that he does almost everyday. He is obviously not stupid and careless considering he has been running almost everyday(on several different mountains) for about 5 years without one mistake. It was obviously a one time thing and he got lost and made a mistake. Why is that so hard for everyone to swallow? Everyone should calm down. It's all okay.(And he IS returning the favor to the SAR crew through various means) So chill...

I like that part of the mountain, there is something about it that is very disorienting, especially off trail. -Plain and simple, allow yourself twice as much time to return before dark as it took yourself to get out there. Especially if you are new to an area. Once it's dark signs don't help much w/o a light source, most cell phones won't work in those canyons. -Some of the thickest fog I've has been in that area, and an ultra-light wind breaker doesn't seem so heavy when ya need it. Good for the SAR, it's possible that guy would have died.
