Norwalk police breakup near riot in SoNoBy John Nickerson

NORWALK-Police responded to a near riot over the weekend involving about 300 Halloween-costumed revelers on Washington Street and at Webster Street parking lot in the heart of SoNo, police said.
Responding officers outside Club 77 on West Washington Street saw a crowd blocking the street and radioed for reinforcements before 23 on-duty and extra work officers and police dog Nomak showed up to restore order, Sgt. Lisa Cotto said.

Four men were arrested on charges including breach of peace and assault.

When police arrived at about 1:30 a.m. Saturday they saw a group of five men beating and kicking another man at the corner of Washington and Madison streets. Simultaneous disturbances occurred in front of the club and on a driveway leading from Washington Street to the Webster Street parking lot, Cotto said. Police observed Leroy Pressley, 21, of 19 Snowden St., Norwalk, stomping on the head of the man on the ground and Pressley was charged with third-degree assault.

After police broke up the fight, the 21-year-old assault victim stood up but then collapsed and was taken to the hospital with a gash over his right eye, bloody lip and cut head, Cotto said.

Police were first called to Club 77 that night when a man began pushing a security guard who would not let the man in because the club was too crowded, Cotto said.

Taking away security in a public parking lot and not adding police when after everything has transpired in the Webster parking lot and you say we have money when the city is broke?

"That's one of the concerns we want to address by going back to pay stations and eliminating the toll booth arm there and having it a little more service friendly," Mayor Richard A. Moccia said. "I think as we move forward with the budget plans -- and we do have funds to do it -- that we can go to the pay stations, have a little more customer-friendly attitude down there, and take that toll booth out."

182 officers is what we has
176 funded
179 budgeted
what do we have right now?

Police received two unrelated robbery calls between 7:55 and 9:15 p.m. Sunday night. The first came from a city resident reporting that a man in a car followed him on Connecticut Avenue to his West Cedar Street home before trying to take his jewelry.
The Norwalk man told police the robbery pointed something at him that he believed was a gun and demanded all of his jewelry, Sgt. Lisa Cotto said. The resident replied he had no jewelry, and the man got back into his car and drove away.

In the second incident, a Speedy Pizza worker delivering to a condominium at 14 Glenrock Road, said three men approached him and demanded his money. The worker immediately gave the men a small amount of cash and they left, Cotto said. The man was not injured during the robbery.
