More recently, Patronek (1999) surveyed animal shelter operators about their experiences with people who hoard animals. Detailed information was obtained on 54 cases. An animal hoarder was defined as "someone who accumulates a large number of animals; fails to provide minimal standards of nutrition, sanitation and veterinary care; and fails to act on the deteriorating condition of the animals (including disease, starvation and even death) or the environment (severely overcrowded and unsanitary conditions), or the negative impact of the collection on their own health and well-being." These findings support some of Worth and Beck's conclusions. Most cases were female (76%), a large proportion (46%) were 60 years of age or older; most were single, divorced or widowed; and almost half lived alone. The most common animals involved were cats (65%) and dogs (60%). Based on the data collected, Patronek estimated that there are 700 to 2,000 new cases of animal hoarding every year in the United States. The conditions described were fairly consistent in both studies. Dead or sick animals were discovered in 80% of reported cases, yet in nearly 60% of cases the hoarder would not acknowledge the problem (Patronek, 1999). In 69% of cases, animal feces and urine accumulated in living areas, and over one-quarter of the hoarders' beds were soiled with feces or urine. Hoarders' justifications for their behavior included an intense love of animals, the feeling that animals were surrogate children, the belief that no one else would or could take care of them, and the fear that the animals would be euthanized. As in Worth and Beck's (1981) report, a significant number of hoarders had nonfunctional utilities (i.e., bathroom plumbing, cooking facilities, heat, refrigeration and electricity). The resolution of these cases was often protracted and difficult, and the hoarder frequently resumed the behavior. Sixty percent of the hoarders studied were repeat offenders. Many of the caseworkers expressed frustration with the perceived lack of cooperation from public and mental health professionals (Patronek, 1999). To date, information about animal hoarders has been provided secondhand by officers and caseworkers investigating these individuals. Only one study has collected information directly from the animal hoarders. To address this problem, the Hoarding of Animals Research Consortium (HARC) was formed in conjunction with the Tufts Center for Animals and Public Policy, Boston University, Northeastern University, Smith College and the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. The first HARC project was to interview people who meet the definition of an animal hoarder as well as people who own multiple pets but do not show the lack of care of their animals that is characteristic of hoarders.

Most of the SOTR it seems, are the same person. Since most have been exposed, they are now back again TROLLING to start trouble on this thread. "A particularly insidious form of animal hoarder is the institutional or quasi-institutional hoarder. These individuals masquerade (often quite effectively) under the guise of legitimate shelters, sanctuaries, hospices, rescue groups, or foster care providers. Often the deception is sophisticated and deliberate and may serve both as a conduit for donations as well as a way for these individuals to obtain an air of legitimacy, which furthers their ability to obtain animals. Some hoarders may even have official nonprofit status or may pursue such a designation if they feel threatened. " http://veterinarymedicine.dvm360.com/vetmed/M ... Hoarding has nothing to do with legitimate shelters, rescues or sanctuaries that work to rescue and care for the millions of unwanted, abandoned, suffering animals. So, it is particularly troubling that some persons hoard under the pretense of operating as an animal shelter, rescue or sanctuary. Also, hoarders in an organization can ultimately destroy it, causing a phenomenon known as institutional hoarding. As the situation deteriorates, the organization may ultimately (1) focus on acquisition of animals and make little or no effort to place animals in homes, (2) continue to take in animals even when it is clear the care is deteriorating, (3) have too few or inconsistent numbers of staff, (4) refuse to disclose the actual number of animals, (5) refuse to allow visitors into some or all of the areas where animals are kept, (6) make unsupported claims of excellent lifetime care, (7) fail to provide humane care and cause the animals to suffer from malnutrition, starvation, illness, disease, untreated injuries, poor sanitation, overcrowding, inadequate shelter from the weather, and intensive confinement; and (8) refuse to acknowledge the deteriorating conditions and neglectful and abusive treatment of the animals.

Most cat collectors have "enablers" who help them. The enablers think of themselves as rescue helpers. They go out and acquire cats for the collection or might help with care or contributions of food or money. These enablers realise that what the collector is doing is terribly wrong, but they continue to help "for the sake of the cats." Enablers describe the collector as a wonderful caring person who is dedicated to their cats and then describe the horrors of the collector's premises as if that was the best way in the world for cats to live. They show the same unreasoning devotion to the collector as cult followers have to a suicide-cult leader.

Traditionally, an agent provocateur (plural: agents provocateur, French for "inciting agent") is a person employed by the police or other entity to act undercover to entice or provoke another person to commit an illegal act. More generally, the term may refer to a person or group that seeks to discredit or harm another by provoking them to commit a wrong or rash action. What Is A Troll? The term derives from "trolling", a style of fishing which involves trailing bait through a likely spot hoping for a bite. The troll posts a message, often in response to an honest question, that is intended to upset, disrupt or simply insult the group. Usually, it will fail, as the troll rarely bothers to match the tone or style of the group, and usually its ignorance shows. Why do trolls do it? I believe that most trolls are sad people, living their lonely lives vicariously through those they see as strong and successful. Disrupting a stable newsgroup gives the illusion of power, just as for a few, stalking a strong person allows them to think they are strong, too. For trolls, any response is 'recognition'; they are unable to distinguish between irritation and admiration; their ego grows directly in proportion to the response, regardless of the form or content of that response. Trolls, rather surprisingly, dispute this, claiming that it's a game or joke; this merely confirms the diagnosis; how sad do you have to be to find such mind-numbingly trivial timewasting to be funny? Remember that trolls are cowards; they'll usually post just enough to get an argument going, then sit back and count the responses (Yes, that's what they do!). How can troll posts be recognised? No Imagination - Most are frighteningly obvious; sexist comments on nurses' groups, blasphemy on religious groups .. I kid you not. Pedantic in the Extreme - Many trolls' preparation is so thorough, that while they waste time, they appear so ludicrous from the start that they elicit sympathetic mail - the danger is that once the group takes sides, the damage is done. False Identity - Because they are cowards, trolls virtually never write over their own name, and often reveal their trolliness (and lack of imagination) in the chosen ID. Multipule names and internet address's. Crossposting - Any post that is crossposted to several groups should be viewed as suspicious, particularly if unrelated or of opposing perspective. Why would someone do that? Off-topic posting - Often genuine errors, but, if from an 'outsider' they deserve matter-of-fact response; if genuine, a brief apposite response is simply netiquette; if it's a troll post, you have denied it its reward. Repetition of a question or statement is either a troll - or a pedant; either way, treatment as a troll is effective. Missing The Point - Trolls rarely answer a direct question - they cannot, if asked to justify their twaddle - so they develop a fine line in missing the point. Thick or Sad - Trolls are usually sad, lonely folk, with few social skills; they rarely make what most people would consider intelligent conversation. However, they frequently have an obsession with their IQ and feel the need to tell everyone. This is so frequent, that it is diagnostic! Somewhere on the web there must be an Intelligence Test for Trolls - rigged to always say "above 150"

My screen name is an inside joke between another poster and myself.(not that it matters) I was just saying that this has been a done deal for (what?) over a month and you all are still going on about it? Are we a little obsessed? I'm not trying to bash at anyone and can care less if anyone writes anything in reply. I can also care less about the juvenile peanuts and bulbs are available in this forum. It seems that anyone who opposes or questions a certain group in this forum gets the little nasty ones so they obviously don't mean crap. I come in here only to see if there is any news on the case.

Maybe we'll see more of Chris DeRose, only this time in Florida? I hope they put up more videos of the supporters... those were soooooooo chock full of information, weren't they? Too bad they took the TR ones off of YouTube... I thoroughly enjoyed critiquing each & everyone of them... Oh, what a tangled web they did weave... including but not limited to anyone that was a public figure on those videos.

InfoWoman wrote: <quoted text> You seem to forget that it wasn't just the PSPCA that saw the abuse and neglect. The ASPCA was also present. Dr. Melinda Merck, who helped put Michael Vick in prison, was present and horrified by what she saw.(See quote below) She was going to testify against Lin Marie. The Allegheny County detectives were present and horrified at what they saw. They were going to testify against Lin Marie. Three other independent veterinarians were prepared to testify against Lin Marie. The PSPCA was there to facilitate the rescue and the housing of the animals. That was their main part in the rescue. This was taken directly from the ASPCA's website: According to Dr. Melinda Merck, ASPCA's Senior Director of Veterinary Forensics, the cats, ranging in age from three months to seven years, suffered from a host of ailments, including upper respiratory infections, skin wounds, abscesses, dehydration, malnutrition, dental problems, eye and bladder infections, "and many other medical conditions that could have been resolved with proper husbandry," she said. "The overcrowding and unsanitary conditions, flea and parasite infestation, as well as the stress of competing for food and coping with untreated illnesses, resulted in severe medical conditions," said Dr. Merck. This is a great post! Don't forget the new sentencing hearing is coming up.
