DENVER - A new presidential poll shows Senator John McCain (R-Arizona) leading against Senator Barack Obama (D-Illinois) with polled likely-voters in Colorado.

McCain has inched ahead of Obama in Colorado; come within inches in Minnesota and narrowed the gap in Michigan and Wisconsin according to four Quinnipiac University polls of likely voters in those states. In Colorado, McCain is up 46 percent compared to Obama's 44 percent. This is a change from June 26 when Obama lead with 49 percent and McCain followed with 44 percent.

The poll was conducted with the Wall Street Journal and Washingtonpost.com .

When asked about energy policy and Iraq, voters in each state said energy policy was more important. Additionally, by margins of 22 to 31 percentage points, voters in each state support offshore oil drilling, and by seven to 12-point margins, drilling in the Alaskan National Wildlife Refuge. Those results might explain the shift in Colorado support as McCain supports additional drilling and Obama opposes it.

"Roughly one in ten voters say they have changed their minds and now favor drilling because of the jump in energy prices. They support Obama, but with voters saying that the energy issue is now more important to their presidential vote than is the war in Iraq, this group represents an opportunity for the Republican," explained Peter Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.

Independent voters and male voters have increased their support of McCain in each state, according to the poll. Additionally, Obama leads McCain 50 to 39 percent among Colorado women likely voters, while men back McCain 55 to 37 percent. White voters back McCain 51 to 41 percent as Hispanic voters go with Obama 57 to 29 percent. Obama leads 51 to 43 percent with voters 18 to 34 years old, but the two candidates are tied at 46 percent among voters 35 to 54. McCain leads 51 to 37 percent among voters over 55.

Overall results show:-- Colorado: McCain is up 46 – 44 percent, compared to a 49 – 44 percent Obama lead June 26; -- Michigan: Obama tops McCain 46 – 42 percent, compared to a 48 – 42 percent lead last time; -- Minnesota: Obama edges ahead 46 – 44 percent, compared to a 54 – 37 percent Obama lead; -- Wisconsin: Obama leads McCain 50 – 39 percent, compared to 52 – 39 percent.

"The good news for McCain is that he has improved his standing in Colorado and Michigan, two states that are critical to each man's strategy. Obama wants to break through in the Rocky Mountain and Southwestern states that have been going Republican for decades. McCain sees recently Democratic Michigan as his top takeaway target," added Brown. Brown says voters are more divided on which potential First Lady fits the image best than they are on President Bush's approval ratings. President Bush's approval ratings are:-- 31 – 62 percent in Colorado; -- 25 – 69 percent in Michigan; -- 28 – 66 percent in Minnesota; -- 26 – 68 percent in Wisconsin.

Voters say 37 to 27 percent that Cindy McCain better fits their idea of a First Lady than Michelle Obama. Men prefer Ms. McCain 43 to 20 percent while women split with 33 percent for Ms. Obama and 32 percent for Ms. McCain.

Reading the comments for this one on 9news website has been pretty funny. Anytime Obama gets negative press, the roaches really start screaming foul, and all the silly names start coming out. Maybe we can get some discussion going on this board as well.

obama should be nervous. He's gotten a lot of positive press lately; he should be killin McCain in the polls. It can't be all about drillin' for Texas tea, can it?

Also, although I dislike it when they break the polls out by race, where is the black voting results? Maybe the black population percentage in CO too minimal to report on?

The way I see it, Obama is still the "presumptive" nominee...But, if Obama becomes the "nominee", McCain will be the lesser of two evils...He has the experience, successful foriegn relations, military savvy, and is far more seasoned than Obama...
With Obama, it's all about "self", his GQ walk, his lip service, the uncoordinated "puppet master" whose hand is up his butt, and ratings...Obama literally has no foundation on which a Presidency can be built...No voting record, no viable history, no experience, no foriegn relations, and the closest he's ever come to anything military is Toy Soldiers as a child...

Folks can bash Bush all day long, but the current situation around the entire world cannot be blamed on just one man...Bush didn't single handedly cause Americas plight, the Democratic Congress had their part in it too, and obviously a much bigger part if you look at the big picture...America wasn't in its best shape two years ago, but when Pelosi and her bunch took over, we really started an out of control downward spiral, that was brought to us by those who are hell bent on destroying this country...The Liberal Dems...

the only thing remotely on pelosi and "harry the hacks'" mind was bashing bush and gaining control of the white house this year. nothing else mattered to them, they don't give one shitt about what's good for the country.

We're talking "fast" food, not restaurant burgers...On those, I'd have to agree with Legends in CO, but haven't found a decent one out here...

I have to go with you on this burger deal. In and Out is by far the best fast food burger. Claudes in Tulsa OK is a burger stand on Peoria Ave. that has two 400 pound guys flipping the best burgers I have ever had. Pelosi sucks and eats raw meat.

My neighbor actually is related to the family that owns In and Out. He says there is political instability in the family and they may franchise out to certain states. Colorado being one of them as there are so many Californians that have and still are migrating here. Could be a bunch of BS but I'll keep a positive attitude. We have Fat Burger, but it's not that good. Pelosi sucks.

I cannot believe people would actually vote for more of the same. McCain wants to drill for more oil. Okay that sounds all well and good but it would take a decade before we will see any drop in gas prices and at a price of our wilderness going to rubble.
And you know what? I actually LIKE the reduced traffic, the lower insurance rates because people are driving less, some of our products being made here in the USA once again because it's cheaper to make it here than in China and my family getting out and doing some actual exercising and family time because it's free compared to a night out at the movies.
The recent McCain ad really boils me,though. The one that blames Obama for our gas prices. Can that ad get any more crazier?
I don't like either candidate but I dislike McCain the most.
Our society is too intwined on personalities and background. We should look at what these people represent. McCain represents the 1% wealthy who he would benefit the most. Obama is for the middle class. PERIOD.
You take rumors and feelings about competency and the ridiculous Muslim backgrounds suggestions and you're only hurting all of us with more of the same.
I do fear for our future. I fear McCain may win. Why? Because most Americans that would favor Obama is not gonna go out there and wait in line to vote. Or they can't because the window to vote is during work time. The rich guys can take the time off. Not necessarily everyone else.
And before you judge me my Daughter is going in the Navy so yea support the troops magnetic ribbons whatever.

For someone who doesn't "like either candidate", you sure sound like a meandering moveon commercial with all their talking points.

I will give you credit for one new point that I have not heard before: "The rich guys can take the time off (to vote)". That's pretty weak. How about "the rich guys are the ones working long, hard hours to pay for the social programs while the jobless, welfare obama supporters don't have squat to do so they're the ones that can vote."

It's good to hear about your daughter signing up. Did you know obama plans to cut military spending big time? That will impact her by the way.

The LIE that's being thrown around by the Dem's is that it would take 5-10 years to see any results from drilling...FACT is that it would take only 1-2 years...The reason the Dem's are soooo against drilling domestically, look into their stock portfolios...The majority of them have large sums of personal money invested in FORIEGN oil...Now, one could argue that the Republicans are also into oil but, there's one huge difference...Many of them come from DOMESTIC oil families...
So, we can keep things as is, and end up being completely screwed in less than a decade, or we can utilize our own resources and tell the foriegners to piss off...By doing the latter, oil would drop substantially, not only for us but worldwide...Ween the junkie, the dealer goes broke...

Large Filipino,

I wonder if that "Pump" ad for McCain blaming fuel prices on Obama was done when Phil Graham was still his advisor? It really is a bizarre ad when you think about exactly how much power a junior Senator has to control the price of oil. If that ad got run by a focus group, it must have been a group of staunch McCain supporters rather than a mix of Indy, Rep.& Dem.

I think about my daughter when it comes to who I vote for. Obama has a better chance in my mind to end this war sooner. McCain. I dunno. He wants a continuation. My daughter is only a Junior right now. What will be our state in a year? I don't know.

But all this gas talk really irks me. Do you remember at what year we had gas prices as low as 99 cents a gallon? Try 1999. Look it up.

This ILLEGAL war has EVERYTHING to do with our rising gas prices.

Bush was re-elected twice. The thinking behind the second term of you guys remember is that we may as well let Bush finish what he started.

So what is it now? Were now gonna let McCain finish what Bush started?

So you think because my Daughter wants to join the military I should vote McCain because he won't cut military spending? So she can experience killing another human being?

How about less fighting? How about lets take steps to END THIS WAR?

Sorry but in my eyes,McCain is DANGEROUS.

"If it will take hundred more years so be it."

Can we afford that?

I'd suggest you take a better look at Obama, who's now favoring the war, and has vowed to continue the "War on Terrorism"...Your candidate has flipped on everything he's ever said, but only during his campaign, and to those who favor liars...His voting record (what voting record?) speaks volumes as to where he'll lead this nation...He cannot function without his "masters" hand up his ass, like any other puppet...
If you're truly that gullable, I'd suggest wising up before November...
Obamas interests lie solely in himself...

Look. When I see McCain I see a continuation to this madness. MICKEY MOUSE is a better candidate than McCain.
This does not make me gullible.
Frankly,I really don't care who is our next president is as long as our next president is DEMOCRAT.
Sure they have flaws too. I can go on till the next millennium talking about the good and the bad of both sides.
In reality no one is 100% one way. We all favor bits of both I'd like to believe.
But I look at who Bush wants in office.
And I'll go against his wishes thank you.
There you go.
