The history behind Labor Day

Full story: www.waks.com

Labor Day is a holiday that began in 1882. Cleveland State History Professor David Goldberg says the idea originated from New York City's Central Labor Union. He explains that the motive was to create a day off for the "working man".

If it is to honor the working man why not make it a paid day?

Lacking that it is just another day between Sunday and Saturday without income which does more harm than good.

Many times in life on Labor Day I said screw Labor Day I would rather have the money.

When I first entered the work force it was at minimum wage and that was just enough to pay the rent water and electric and bologna sandwiches. No replacement clothes, no car, no nothing.

As I was in my early 20's at the time a holiday day off really did nothing but take the food right out of my mouth and I came to despise holidays including the 4th of July, Christmas, New Years Day, all of them for the social damage that they do to the working man.

The holidays were all great as a child and teen but when you grow to need that money every day and you are dirt poor even if you do work 40 hrs a seek this is when I learned that Labor Day as was taught us in school is or was a hoax because it totally excludes the poorest and hardest working people of all and that is those who earn minimum wage.

If Labor Day does anything it discriminates by punishing those workers or "laborers" who are in need the most by taking away a days pay and a day without pay is not something they look forward too even if it is dressed up as a holiday.

If workers are to be honored on Labor Day double their pay for that day or give them time and a half.

Another day without pay is no reward and it never fails that holidays are on Friday or Monday as if two days in a row without pay wasn't bad enough they have to stretch Fridays minimum wage to Tuesday or Thursdays minimum wage to Monday.

So that's why all the hourlies at our plant try to drag out work the week before if we don't offer them to come in on holidays. If not caught it screws up production planning, delays goods getting to customers, and adds cost in overtime, deferred holidays, and customer complaint. But more money in the short run is good, right? It's a paid day for salaried employees - one of the many benefits of negotiating your own pay.

Our friendly government workers get a day off with pay on the backs of the tax payers.

Labor Day (the word 'labor' in particular) does not do well within the realm of political correctness. It carries the conotation of slavery.

Nor does Easter, Christmas, the Fourth of July, Columbus Day, the anniversary dates of our presidents,or other major holidays. It's like holding a crucifix in the face of Dracula.

But, being the good hippocrits they are, they take full advantage of these occasions. They accept the time off from work and greedily accept Christmas presents.

Gotta love it when a group of citizens that's done nothing to better themselves beyond being valuable in the work place above minimum wage gets upset about having a day off. You want a better life? Here's an idea, get an education, make yourself more valuable as an employee, have more to offer to your employer and quit bitching and expecting a free days pay when you've done nothing to earn it. You complain about how salaried workers get the day paid. I don't see any talk about that educated skilled salaried worker regularly putting in 50 hour work weeks with no extra compensation while you respond with "It's not in my union contract" when asked to perform the most minute extra duty.

Not to mention stifling progress by being a part of an organization that's inherently against efficiency. We're constantly trying to find cheaper ways of making product so we don't have to outsource but that means less man-hours per unit, which means less overtime and/or less people required, so we get no support. Then "that's not my job" turns into "where did the job go?"

Everywhere else in the world celebrates "Labor Day" on May 4, 1886. The holiday marks an event called the Haymarket Riots in Chicago on that date - people died in support of eight hour work day.

Daily Horoscope for January 5

Virgo

You aren't fooling anyone - it's easy for everyone else to see that inexperienced people are unaware of their obligations, Virgo. You're grumpy about starting a familiar process from the beginning again, but don't let that get in the way of getting on with it. Sour grapes have no place in your daily dealings. Although you may 'own' a project, it's ultimately in the hands of someone else. Deal with it and then move on.
