Gone with the wind - Business

Wow! A wind hit piece. Hello! Don't just quote a vacation home owner (property values) and a haole from KY. Take your pick, oil or wind? Give me a break. A real no brainer. Choke green jobs for Lanai. Ask what unemployed residents think. Take a vote!

Lana'i is by far the most beautiful island with the most friendlist of people. It's the best island to visit, if you want absolute peace and quiet. If they're going to build the windmill farms, shouldn't the people of Lana'i at least benefit from it? I mean come on they pay through their noses for everything. I know the windmill farm would ruin the beautiful scenery of the island, but if it'll make the people of Lana'i not depend on tourism that's a good thing right? Then again I only visit there, I don't live there so perhaps the people of Lana'i should have the right to say yea or nay.

What about the property rights of the owner. He should be able to do things on his property, at least things that are within reason.

Who cares where John Mumford lives. It seems like Lanai has become a place of 2nd homes for wealthy mainlanders. They don't mind the high costs of fossil fuel because they are wealthy. And they don't care if people have jobs or not, once again because they are immune to those ills because of their wealth. Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against wealth, in fact I wish I had that problem.

I read that less than 1% of our energy is "green" at the moment.... and the goal is 70%... LOL In 20 years... LOL

This is a very biased piece of journalism. Can Nadja Brandt (the author) please do a better job. It's fairly obvious she was upset that she did not get to speak directly with Mr. Murdock when she unnecessarily stated how many times she called and emailed him. She was still able to speak with a C&C executive about the situation. A hidden agenda perhaps? I've been to Lana'i many times (fishing/vacation) and think its wonderful they want to create renewable energy sources. Oil (pollution/global warming) vs. Wind (scenic views)? Everyone keeps TALKING about renewables, I'm glad some people are actually DOING it. In the end, it's the DOING that really makes a difference.

This is another example of anti-business mentality. Cattle farming were replaced by pineapple. Now that pineapple is gone, we need to move on to the next phase to sustain Lanai's livelihood and economy. This will provide jobs to the residents of Lanai.

I have an idea. Why doesn't Murdoch grow sugar cane. He can use it to produce biofuel. It is green energy, and agriculture. He won't need a permit. I'm sure those losers with there 2nd homes on Lanai would enjoy the periodic canefires and the smoke that would accompany it. Give me a break!!! BUILD THE WINDMILLS AND GET SOME GREAT JOBS FOR THE ISLAND.

Has anyone ever gone to Lanai and talked to the people who live there? Some of you people are clueless! The damage this man has done to the island in 20 years is incredible. He may own the majority of the island but he still needs to follow the law like everyone else!

He could put that wind farm anywhere else on the island (remember, a huge chunk of the island was once pineapple) but he wants to put it in an area that is prestine and undeveloped. One of the choice hunting areas with access to some of the best fishing on the island. He will cut public access and make it even harder for people who live there.

And as far as jobs go, do you really think locals will get the jobs? They will bring in people who specialize in winds turbines and the locals will get screwed as usual.

Agree Alice! One of the commenters stated about the friendliness of the people of Kauai. Well, I was on the Super Ferry that was kept from docking at Lanai by protestors. Three hours of bobbing around and then returning back to Oahu. The minority on Kauai dealt a death blow to the Super Ferry and now they're trying to kill this project.

Word of warning to the residents of Kauai. Don't follow in Molokai's footsteps. The owner of Molokai Ranch wanted to develop a piece of HIS property. Everyone protested, even though the ranch was the main employer for the Island. What happened? He closed the ranch, lock, stock and barrel. It should be noted here that Molokai Ranch provided water for the Island. Ooops! Cut off their nose to spite their face.

Renewables - GOOD
Jobs - GOOD
Reduce Dependence on Mainland - GOOD
Help the Economy - GOOD

Then you have the vocal minority (who just moved there)- BAD

Gee, people are concerned about hunting. First of all a lot of the hunters that are hunting there are hunting illegally. You see you need a permit and you need the permission of the landowner, and they don't have either. The hunters are also hunting year round, and there is actually a season which they are supposed to be hunting. Gee not only does the landowner have to follow laws, but hunters should also.
The fact of the matter is this will bring jobs to the island and even if the people who are currently living there may not all get all the jobs made by this project, there is always jobs that are generated as a result of this project. It is truely unfortunate that you have these people who have no other agenda then to keep things the same no matter what. Gee I think we should rid Lanai of all deer, goats, and pigs now that would be green

I think you got your islands mixed up, it's Lanai not Kauai...

First, he didn't rip the pineapples out, they went to the Philippines and South America.

Secondly, a wind farm is a creative way to develop an economy and not fall the route of cul-de-sac homes and moronic neighborhoods. It would be nice to let land lay fallow, but people have to pay taxes on all that land and that means income is needed from it.

It's never the best of all possible worlds, you have to remember that. By putting up a wind farm the land is being used without over develpoment. If the land remains unused someone will get it and develop it poorly, like Mo'ili'ili or Kalihi.

Murdock is trying to find creative ways to utilize land so that it doesn't become exploited. On the North Shore of Oahu, he's growing coffee on old pineapple farms, hoping that he can replace coffee from pineapple land so the North Shore doesn't fall into over develpoment and ruin the quality of life in that area. Basically, he's trying to create a cash crop and save the North Shore.
