Don't know about this one. It isn't illegal to have a blue light and siren. Just illegal to use them unless your authorized. It sure ain't illegal to have avideo camera. Got to be more then reported.

I can say for a fact that some of the security guards at the Weapon Station in Charleston think they have all the right in the world to do what they want. Having worked there I have met a few who gave me a hard time when they had no authority what so ever. Their job is to check I.D's and make sure the buildings are locked.

Know the law... 56-5-170 section be states
(B) Only authorized emergency vehicles and private security patrol vehicles regulated by the State Law Enforcement Division are allowed use or display of any blue lights or red lights. This includes light bars and smaller lights such as dash, deck, or visor lights. To "display" means to be seen, whether activated or not.

Please know what you are talking about before you state something as a fact.

Once again someone speaks before knowing the facts... Again refer to State Law Security Officers in the State of SC has full arrest powers and while on the property they are paid to protect have the same powers as that given to Deputy Sheriff's

SECTION 40-18-110. Authority and arrest powers of those licensed or registered under chapter.[SC ST SEC 40-18-110]

A person who is registered or licensed under this chapter and who is hired or employed to provide security services on specific property is granted the authority and arrest power given to sheriff's deputies. The security officer may arrest a person violating or charged with violating a criminal statute of this State but possesses the powers of arrest only on the property on which he is employed.

You are absolutely right. And now before some dummy asks you, explain how Miranda works in that situation.

If you are so good at knowing all these laws and are quick to jump on people who are ignorant of them then why are you a 'Former Cop'? Break a few laws yourself did you? Is that why you're so good at knowing them?

If you must know, I now work in the private sector teaching cops. And didnt jump on people just if someone is going to spread misconceptions of the laws it helps increase the "ignorance of the laws" as you stated.

O.k you have a point. I'm sure they have the State Authority. But not on a Military base. It is federal property. It has nothing to do with the State. They can only detain someone untill the MP's get there. They have no authority on a Military base. So before you speak, you need to know the facts.

I correct myself. I shouldn't say no authority but limited authority.

Wrong again, the NWS is a concurent jurisdiction. meaning the state and federal have jurisdiction, therefore state jurisdiction does apply. Further its MA's or DON Police not MP's and whether the contract security exercise that authority due to client desires does not remove that authority. Try again!

Although the continued conversations on the ins and outs of the laws have been fun. My main purpose for comenting in the first place was to help get the proper information out so that others reading the comments might not end up in the same position as the guy arrested believing it is ok to "display" the blue lights. This guy knew better and has no defense to his actions.

The way I se it is that all of you cops and wannabe cops are just fulfilling a fantasy from your childhood, and the fact that you were picked on all through school for your inadequacies just makes you that much more adament to be a cop or wannabe.

Where the heck did reddogg come from? I hope he's never in need for assistance... Please explain how holding a teenager's head together (literally) at the scene of an accident while waiting for EMS, or being shot at while attempting to save the life of innocent shooting victim, or countless other ways cops. firefighters, EMTs and other such people that are out here trying to make a difference in our world, put themselves at risk for ungratefull people like him, is fullfilling some sort of fantasy. Imagine a world with no line of defense against the evil that surrounds us. Guess thats where reddogg wants to live.

I see alot of people driving down the street that are not cops who have blue lights on their dash board. It's considered trendy. I guess they don't know it's illegal.

1. I have learned something new today; I didn't realized the Naval Weapons Station was part of the State.

2. How's does a private security guard gain weapons and police accessories in their possession? I would thank SC would have more classes and/or awareness on how to determine when someone is impersonating an officer.

I used to live there, and let me tell you, those security guys think they are god's gift. They feel like they can tell anyone to do anything, and have little regard for actual police officers. A dear friend was a State Trooper, and when coming to see us on base, had a lengthy argument about his police car, his sidearm, his uniform, and his attitude. The security guy was promptly sent home and our friend got intense apologies from the supervising guard...but it happens a LOT.

PS...I would like to be wrong here, just so everyone knows. It could be that the guards we encountered were isolated cases. BUT...as much as it happened, I am not so sure.
