I think it is a good idea. I know that if they need an armed policeman they can just call the NAPD, but I do agree that there are times that they should be armed. It could be only a split second that something goes wrong before the NAPD arrive. If they are "police" and not "security guards" then they should have the authority of the "police". This includes carrying weapons. This is just my point of view. Anyone else?

In that "split second" you mention, I'm afraid campus police would use a gun and create a bigger problem. I think your point about police vs. security guard is an important one. What's the difference and what does MCLA have? To answer your question, I'm against arming campus police.

I think its a good idea as long as there is extensive proper training. If the gaurd is an ex or retired police officer or ex military would be a plus. Look around, read, take a walk at night through the heart of your city or pittsfield, the kids arent carring brass knuckles anymore, they have guns!

Odds are very good that it won't make a damn bit of difference about anything, good or bad.

Although it will make the cops feel like their whinkies are bigger.

How would they create a bigger problem? I'm confused. A large majority of MCLA campus police are already sworn, active police officers in other departments such as Adams, North Adams, and Williamstown where they make competent decisions. The "accidental discharge" theory that was given by the (uninformed) student trustee who voted this down is ridiculous and shows how little she knows about the issue. The MCLA campus POLICE is a professional organization and should be treated and equipped as a professional law enforcement agency. The comittee made a good decision. I was particularly impressed with the quote by Williams college faculty member, who is on the MCLA committee.

Trustee William Dudley, a professor at Williams College, said that while he would not support arming campus security guards where he teaches, he felt it was necessary to vote in favor of arming MCLA's campus police.

"During this process, I have learned the difference between a security officer and a sworn police officer," he said. "It would be inappropriate not to give them the tools necessary to carry out their sworn duties."

---I was delighted when I read this excerpt. Professor Dudley is probably not a pro-gun advocate, but he took it upon himself to become more educated on the fine line and distinctions between security and police. He concluded his findings with a reasonable solution and admits to learning from his studies and left personal opinions out of the matter. Too bad Sarah Dimorino did not exercise the same:

"A lot of students have said they will not feel safe with campus police being armed," she said. "The best decisions are not made during times of distress."

Actually, Sarah, a trained law enforcement officers best decisions are made during times of distress.

You ignorant twit--there is no conflict of interest--so what if Lisa's hubby is a trooper- Lisa doesn't have anything to do with the campus nor the City Council--take the damn toilet paper out of your ass and make room for your head

Yes I did read this last night on iberkshires.com I think it is a very good idea for all the reasons that you state. As far as the students saying that they wont feel as safe if the campus police are armed really doesn't make sense to me. They trust them now..for instance if they are scared they can call them to escort them to where they are going. Anything could still happen even if they are escorted.....I personally would feel even safer knowing that they are trained to handle ANY situation, especially if I am in their presence.

Daily Horoscope for June 4

Gemini

It's a red letter day for relationships under the Lunar Eclipse in your house of significant others, because you're facing some important and far-reaching changes to some of them. The pressure has been building since the Gemini Solar Eclipse on May 20. f you've known for some time that things aren't working out, you're about to reach a crisis point as becomes obvious that the present situation can't continue much longer. The coming New Moon in Gemini on June 19 will see progress of one kind or another, though this unusual eclipse cycle will have a far-reaching effect. You may have to be cruel to be kind, or more forceful than you would like, in order to get your point across, but do you really have any viable alternative?
