Barrett ousted -- Alcombright wins

Full story: North Adams Transcript

The state's longest serving mayor's 26-year reign has come to an end. John Barrett III, who was seeking his 14th two-year term, lost to Richard Alcombright, the city councilor who mounted an agressive, popular campaign that struck a chord of change with city voters.

John Barrett did a wonderful job in the city and i truly dont think Dick can top what Barrett did. I believe Barrett should go to Boston and get a higher seat in the state. Barrett can do that and he could possibly even go as high as governor. He was a magnificent man and did a whole lot of good to the city. The 1/14 teacher/student ratio was wonderful. Adams and Cheshire has about a 1/23 teacher student ratio.

Though I think Barrett did a fine job for many years it is nice for a change and hope Dick can move us forward to a new and better town. Thank you Mayor Barrett for what you have done for us.
I think Dick has his hands full and can only pray he does what he said He will.

I listened to Dick's comments on the radio and he said that he ran on the premise of change and transparency, which the people liked. I hope he follows through with that and it wasn't just talk because the people liked that.

Another election won with image and no substance...good luck, North Adams, you are going to need it...

By the way, Joe Artisto...
"Mr Alcombright, this city can become Great Barrington under your leadership....here we go!"

Uh, have you been paying attention? Great Barrington is becoming more and more crime-ridden, drug-infested, and ugly. Be careful what you wish for.

Congratulations, Dick! And thank you to Barrett who has served the City well. North Adams doesn't need to be Great Barrington or Northampton. It has the potential and character to be a unique place of it's own--one that others will want to emulate.

Here's looking to a bright future!

I'd rather have a drug-infested Great Barrington than a drug-infested North Adams

If that's so, it's the 14th NA Mayoral election in a row to be won that way!

Congrats to Alcombright!

Boston doesn't want Barrett any more than North Adams did. The only way he'll get a 'higher seat' is to set up a chair on Mt. Greylock!

Thanks to Mayor Barrett for his years of leadership and committment to the community. Congratulations and good luck to Mayor Alcombright. Let's put the election behind us and now move forward. Just think about what the community can accomplish by working together if we duplicate the time devoted to supporting our respective candidates of choice since the summer, and/or time spent blogging into ACTIONS through service and volunteerism. I hope all the interest sparked by the election can be now directed towards activism and pulling together as a city instead of blaming others for our troubles and pulling the city apart.

Hopefully, Bosley's next --- in November 2010. We got rid of Barrett; next, we'll get rid of Bosley. And maybe we can get rid of Downing too, electing some real progressive Democrats instead of "what's in it for me" Democrats like Bosley and Downing who always seem to have their hands out to biz bigwigs and their lobbyists.
