NORTH ADAMS -- The North Adams Housing Authority is already reaping the rewards of upgrades made to the heating systems at four properties in the city. The upgrades, which began last September with the aid of a $3.25 million U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Energy Performance Contract loan, recently brought in some $260,000 in rebates from National Grid and Berkshire Gas. "We heard this week that National Grid is sending a rebate of $252,000 to the housing authority," Amy Carman, the housing authority’s planning and construction consultant, said Thursday during a meeting of the North Adams Housing Authority. "National Grid is sending the rebate because of the burden that’s been taken off of them from both [the Ashland Park and Spring Park high and low rises] coming off of the grid. It’s nice, because it’s unrestricted funds." Over the last eight months, heating systems in the high- and low-rise buildings on Ashland and Spring streets were changed over from electric to gas heating systems. Boilers at the Riverview Apartments, along with the heating system at Greylock Valley Apartments, were also replaced. "The biggest thing has been the changing of the heating systems," Carman said. "It’s been my experience that it can be a big change for residents -- it can feel colder. It takes about two winters for residents to adjust to the changes in the heating system." She said the Advertisement
heating upgrade is essentially complete, with contractors only having "punch lists" to complete. "Ashland and Spring need a lot less electricity to operate now," she said. "We can now run both buildings off of an emergency generator, if needed, which we couldn’t do before." In addition to the heating project, Carman also noted that two programs funded by National Grid and Berkshire Gas were nearing completion. "We’re going to be changing out a lot of the lighting in each site with more energy efficient lighting fixtures and LED lights," she said. "We’ve also been busy weatherizing the crawl spaces and attic areas at Greylock and Riverview through Berkshire Gas. These two pieces aren’t costing the housing authority anything, as they’re being done through rebate or subsidy programs." Also under way is the second phase of a window replacement project, replacing windows on the backside of the Ashland Park high rise with energy-efficient E-glass. "The windows are less drafty and more insulating," Carman said. Windows on the front of the building and at the Spring Street low-rise were replaced in the fall. Other projects under way include the modernization of elevators and the replacement of a trash compactor at the Spring Park Apartments, along with the replacement of doors at Greylock Valley. A new emergency generator for the Ashland Park Apartments is in the design phase.

it can feel colder. It takes about two winters for residents to adjust to the changes in the heating system......That is the most pathetic excuse I ever heard I was told to move out if I didn't like it, there was not mention of residents take 2 yrs. to adjust. Does Jennifer think we are stupid. And why is the heat still on in the community room. Something smell real fishy here. And the replacement windows are not even insulated, and it takes a good 10 minutes to get hot water. They might be saving money but at the residence cost, and safety. Lets see you get out of this one Jennifer. You sure do have some explaining to do. And last but not least......The drugs that come in and out of this place is rediculous. Someone is gonna get hurt or killed if they dont do something soon.

People should be greatful to have a roof over their head, not to have to pay for heat. Some people can't even find a place to live and are stuck sleeping at McDonalds. I am sure they would be very appreciative of an apartment maybe some of the complainers should be moved out and lets house someone who really appreciates it.

As much as these people are bitchin they still stay there right so it can't be that bad or they would move out, i say get rid of all of the dark negative complainers and bring in families who really need a place to live. I am sure that there are some who would appreciate it , pay for oil, pay for gas and then lets talk about heat

What's wrong with sleeping at McDonalds? You have bathrooms, booths to sleep on and a kitchen bigger than any home I've been in.

Electrical fire in Spring St apartment. Extensive water damage. However, 2 ladies that were evacuated from their apartments are left outside in the searing heat. You think the Housing Authority would let them in the office where it is air conditioned . Sounds like elder abuse to me. Gail Ann Carriddi should be notified of this.( not in the office today) I tried to tell the officer but he didnt seem to care either. The fire dept didnt seem concerned for their safety either. WAKE UP PEOPLE.

When is enough enough? Instead of being grateful for the arrival of the fire department and police, two women are annoyed that they aren't provided with air conditioning while they wait? Give me a break!
