I said "yes" because it is terribly abused, the ones benefiting mostly from it are the "non-working class"aka-deadbeats. It should be made available to only the seniors struggling on a meek SS check. The others need to find jobs!

Yes, you are right-the Welfare Program was set up to help people until they got back on their feet again. Look what it has turned into? I am seeing 3rd generation on welfare-mostly teenage mothers. I hope someday the state wakes up and begins to curtail this abuse;this is such a slap in the face to the tax payers.

Welfare does nothing but destroy the very people it is supposed to help. Why does the government reward illegitimate births? Why don't welfare recips have to be subject to drug testing as do working people? Why do so many uneducated woman think it is an acceptable life style? Nice message the government sends. Get knocked up at the local bar room and don't get married. If you stay single we will pay the bills. Why are these people not made to do menial labor until they find something else instead of leaching and making another generation of leaches? Why are the majority of people in jail the illegitimate kids of these illegitimate modern day so called woman. My favorite liberal poison to the well of mankind is making these type bimbos think they are "liberated" by having kids in mass outside marrage. The communist in Russia told people right after the murder of the Czar and the beginning of the socialism know as communism to have as many kids as you want and no need to get married. They smartened up in a few short years and did away with this.

Who started Welfare? FDR during the great depression but people forget welfare is not only cash, food stamps but also anything the government hands as help. Those stmulis checks we all recieved is a form of welfare that costs us money. The fuel asst that some of you recieve is Welfare. Some have no concept were it comes from. The reason why i created this poll was to see where your common sense is? See if you understand what it actually is. Many blame the economy on welfare and say it is part of the problem. I am sorry but our economy has nothing to do with welfare. Welfare is 1 percent. The problem is special interest groups that milk both the Federal and state governments of 100s of billions of dollars. From propision 8 in California to ban Same sex marriage to saving the earth from Global warming. We spend more on these jokes then anything else. You will disagree but thats ur oppinion. So think twice before blaming welfare but we do have a problem and its called Welfare Fraud. You have people who work under the table and collect cash asst, they should go after them and over 5 million illegal aliens who collect welfare and don't pay a dime in taxes now that is a problem. Now we could give the finger to everyone and terminate welfare and no more help period like the old days( 1800s). Its your choice. Also we need is a living wage to match the cost of living BUT!!!!! THAT won't happen they just complain they or us are un educated and only make babies.....lol That again is a small % of people. SO REMEMBER OUR ECONOMY IS A MESS BECAUSE THE 100S OF BILLIONS OF DOLLARS ARE WASTED ON GREEDY COMPANIES WHO THROW IT AWAY AT OUR EXPENSE.

I have witnessed myself where a mother and father are getting welfare and still together. How do people get away with this stuff. There is so much fraud out there and no one seems to care. We are just handing people money to sit on their @sses.

This is a though one. One hand the system gets more than abused. On the other hand free handouts from those who pay taxes for people who are not using those resources wisely is a waste. Welfare should be for emergency only, for those who are trying to get back on their feet again. NOt for young ones who have children just to get a check, or older ones who don't want to work.
Welfare should be availabale for those who have worked for a certain amount of time and have payed their taxes, say 5 or ten years s they can rely on it in case of an emergency situation.
Eliminating welfare completely would created an amazing amount of social problems. Just ask anyone who lives in a country were welfare is not available. Crime and theft rises immediately for starters but on the other hand people who live on welfare for more than 2 or 3 years are the higher to suffer from depression. I don't have an answers, but I do know for sure that there should be a reform.

Because it turns into a special interest.

They are taught by the "experts" how to beat the system; they know how to lie, cheat and steal from the taxpayers. What amazes me is that they do it without having any conscience or pride. They are the ones that will bitch the loudest if they feel that in anyway they are not being treat fairly. I use to work in the public sector and I saw first hand how they expected to be given the red carpet treatment; personally, I would like to pull the rug out from underneath each and everyone of them and watch them all land on their good for nothing butts.

Bengal you know they offer big time awards for catching people comitting welfare fraud. But let us not forget what welfare is in the 1st place. In 2007 the numbers are: 411,000,000,000 billion dollars in Welfare spending which is 3.2% of the Gross Domestic Product. Out of that 191 Billion dollars was spent on Healthcare. And another 136 billion dollars on Retirement and disability. Then finally 84 Billion dollars on other welfare programs like fuel assistance.

I agree with you,"Bengal". We need reform, and we need it badly. Not only for "Public assistance" but also for "Corporate welfare". Both are killing the Middle Class. I believe in giving a helping hand when needed. Helping hand now means retirement plan. You see many that feel they are entitled. You see many with better health care then the working individuals, or the elderly. You see some people eating better then the working class or the elderly. You see people getting free child care, while they are sitting at home doing nothing. With entitlement; comes "no shame" and "no pride". Corporate Welfare is just as bad,(maybe even worse)they feel they are "entitled" to billions and billions of dollars in grant money. Many getting rich off the backs of the taxpayers. They learn to play this game so good that the ones who could really use the money, can't touch it.

I agree that the system is greatly abused. BUT it is a necessary service for some very needy people. I think we need a revised system to monitor the abusers and keep them out od the system. I also think that the welfare system should provide partial benefits to families who need just SOME help. Now you cant get a little help. Its all or nothing, so instead of encouraging families to keep working and we will help the system encourages them to give up and go on walfare.

Welfare has its purpose. Is it abused? Of course. But that's what needs to be enforced.
