Colonial Beach could and should support public housing but the people in public housing need to obey the rules and regulations -- things can go bad in life but they need to pick themselves up and get back on their feet and they need help from the town of Colonial Beach and the Colonial Beach churches and etc. and it they don't obey the ruls and regulations they should be warned and if they don't change then be thrown out.

O.K. Colonial Beach had a tennis court a few years ago and it seemed like noone ever played there -- hey do they have a tennis class in Colonial Beach -- Dah! that may be why noone showed up on the court. There are two beautiful children playgrounds one at the point and one at the elimentary school and that is a nice place to take a picnic lunch and small children and grandchildren. There are alot of summer activities at the churches and at the schools for the town residents. I do think that there is a need for a public swimming pool but take things step by step. My husband and I have retired here in Colonial Beach and when our grandchildren come to visit we go on the golf cart, go to the beach, stop and get ice cream and play alot of board games and etc. and in the evening we rent a movie and have pizza and popcorn and really really enjoy and get to know our children and grandchildren and find out what they are doing. Colonial Beach is a place to sit back and relax and enjoy family and friends.

Love S T CB: I sure hope this does not catch on. People acturally taking care of their own and enjoying it. Even the kids enjoy it??
We need places to send the kids to so they will not bother us. Taxpayers owe us entertainment for our lovely children. I hate watching the same TV shows they do. Get them out of my hair.
And, dont ask me to volunteer for kid duty anywhere.

The town needs to establish a social services department to help the people who live at Riverwood with job training, employment, child care, transportation, and drug education.

job training - first step is to obtain an education....if you cant do that then we are really talking about taking orders for food in this town..........at which point your life will suck and paying bills will be a big issue.

so kids go to school if you want a job that pays enough for you to live off of.

The real issue is that Colonial Beach is too small to support public housing. There is just not enough tax revenue coming in. Fredericksburg is in a much better position to support it. Plus, it's a lot closer to more jobs and education facilities for those who may not be able to afford to own a car.
So when the Federal Grant is up, I hope they do make it a public park! Yesterday someone posted something about tennis courts there. I think the the CB taxpayers should have some recreation!
I'm pretty sure that if anyone in Riverwood had the resources, or the money to move to Fredericksburg to get assisted housing, they wouldn't be IN Riverwood. It's not so easy to just pack up and move 45 minutes away, when you have no car, and most likely a child with no dependable childcare... plus, the assisted housing places in Fredericksburg have a 5 year waiting list on them most times. I know this because I am from Fredericksburg, currently living in Riverwood because it's so hard to find a place affordable enough to live in Fredericksburg. Sure there are available jobs, but housing just isn't that easy to get your hands on.

As a town we don't need to maintain our own separate social services department. Our town is covered under the county. Social services used to come here and hold WIC sign ups at Riverwood. I think they met in the laundry room. They also had workers who when they came here met in the Chamber of Commerce buidling with the secretary sitting right there - no privacy. There is also a little something called the Northern Neck Middle Peninsula Community Services Board which is supposed to provide us with services. The problem is there is nowhere for these groups to send representatives within the town. I guess this brings us back to the need for a community center of sorts.

And, where do y'all expect all the people who live in Riverwood to go? This town needs subsidized housing, especially for the woman of our area, as women in Colonial Beach make, on average, 11000 dollars a year less than their male counterparts.
if the residents had not allowed the undesriables to come in there to visit it would still be a decent place to live it has really made it hard for the people who really need a low income place to live due to being single parent or just needing a place to live most are taking advantage of a started out to be a wonderful thing

Does anyone know what happened at Riverwood this past Saturday night? Quite a few police vehicles and unmarked vehicles showed up and the next thing there was people running in all directions, out windows, and over fences. I did not see anything in the paper about it.

I was told that the police were investigating something on 12th street and someone started shooting at the police. Anyone know if this is true or what really happened?

I am getting a bullet-proof vehicle with a crowd-dispersing "mosquito" siren for the police department so they can maintain crowd-control around Riverwood. Those who are inside are safe from the sound as the walls would block it. It would also be an excellent idea for when people hide in the bushes as they are completely un-protected from the high-pitched sound, making them run from it, at which point they would be visible to the cops. Anyone want to help fund this project?

Let's buy one for the fake and lazy wanna-be "Riverwood Cops" while we're at it. The Security team was there when it happened...what did they do to stop them...did they fire back? No!!! They're not security if they don't secure the place. They sit there after enjoying their donuts and coffee from 7-Eleven and sleep in their truck. I rode by them one day and layed on the horn right next to their vehicle (they don't know me, nor do I know them) and after about 4-5 seconds they finally came-to and just waved. Breaking a sound ordinance in the middle of the night in a "private community" in the presence of their well-paid "security team"...nothing was done. By the way...I didn't smile when they looked over either.

You can't count on certain cops in this town either. They take forever to get where they are needed. I was in 7-Eleven the other day when an officer (not saying his name) received a call on his radio for a possible fight in progress. He responded "en route" and got his soda and proceeded to talk to a customer. His response time from the soda machine to his car was 4 minutes. Someone could have died. So I've heard, rescue people can't go on scene of a fight until the police "secure the scene" and without the cops there to control the attacker, someone could very easily die, and the Police Department would just cover it up. Way to go "un-named officer".

Combine cops like this and Security from Riverwood and you get a recipe for disaster. Enough said!

How about we have a 'top cop' competition? Kind of a physical fitness test mixed with event driven fun - the town can get behind this and we also get to see how is fit for duty. Pull ups, sit ups, run & swim and maybe a little marksmenship.

This draws attention to police is a positive way and gets the community more involved with the police. Let's get the town behind the cops as a first step toward ending crime.

This is a wonderful idea. Let's have an open competition and see if we can get the strongest, smartest, best educated young people to vie for a position on our Police force. Then lets tell them that we pay $12.00 and hour.
We are blessed to have the talented individuals that we have. I have to shake my head and thank my lucky stars as a citizen of this town that we have such a dedicated Police force. They receive little pay and less gratitude for their efforts.

cb observer - i get your point........and i think most people would agree that police should be paid more in this area........but with greater pay we would also expect an increase in skill level with the force........i am all for it........i would pay more taxes for better police department..........who else?

If its Saturday night in Riverwood, its shooten time. Of course no one was caught. I think we need more patrol on at night and less in the daytime. Chief call for help, state police and county police. Especially on Saturday nights.

want to stop that mess put a bulldozer to it with some of the criminal element in it........also for the few who will get on here and wine and moan about the very few who need help in life and are trying to get back on their feet........remember you will be the same people crying when a little innocent girl or boy is shot.........and you will be crying in the dtreet to everybody why this had to happen and why did noone see this coming......the answer is people see it coming its just others prefer to act all politically correct and not do a thing about it..........the pc crowd judges and they way things look.....not on results!

the results will be dead innocent people someday.........at that point the place will be done away with.........until then..people will pretend they want something done but not have the guts to do whats required........which is to send them packing
