Sweet baby Jesus layin' in a manger! If you're not FIRST, you're LAST. Shake and Bake! Shake...and...Bake. The decline on the Hilltop started quite awhile ago, and in no way am I asserting that this incident is the sole cause. But, you have to be able to identify a problem before you can resolve it. The affect of residential responsibility can not only increase property value, but can trigger a complete revitalization of the Hill. Taking back the neighborhood from shysters, thugs and trash could be the most difficult undertaking in Columbus history, but what is the alternative? More businesses pulling out because of theft and vandalism, death rates skyrocketing, MS-13, stolen cars and rampant juveniles wreaking havoc on the less fortunate or elderly? That is already the case...take Ronnie's plight and make a difference. Instead of vowing Hilltop-style justice, how about stripping the power from the hoods, thugs and trash? If you have a loved one that contributes to the riff raff by dealing/using their harmful substances...take a stand and shine a HUGE spotlight on them. The illegal activities and contraband trade is safe under the veil of secrecy...and if you can take the necessary action to bring attention to the wrong doers, you will make it difficult to prosper. There are quite a few organizations that could assist in the initial stages, and there is a Community Liason officer at Headquarters that can also advise. On the Southend there was a problem with prostitution/drug mules conducting business at all hours...and we started to realize that the "customers" were in vehicles with business names and telephone numbers. Pictures speak a thousand words, and when you send Supervisors and Managers PICTURES/VIDEO of their vehicles being used as a motorized bordello by their employees... you got it, they go elsewhere. Another thing that I found effective is getting to know the people in the neighborhood and showing solidarity about NOT being a crime infested 'hood and becoming a cohesive community...makes all the difference in the world. But... there has to be determination and rock solid resolve, any sign of weakness and you can kiss progress goodbye. In today's society it is so easy to look the other way and not take a stand... but, when you look away and shirk responsibility, it's only a matter of time before the "random" violence hits home, and then it is too late. I am sure if Ronnie could do it all over again, he would not have risked his life for such an inane situation. The Artist Formerly Known as Mr. Perfect, Ms. Fini |
