Hi there!
I am thinking about a move to Lexington, KY, very lightly at this point. I plan on going to cosmetology school and am looking at the Kaufman School of Beauty. My sister and her husband live there & I am visiting them at the end of July.
Obviously I will be able to find out for myself if I fall in love with KY when I visit, but I am just curious as how it compares to other states I am use to. I am originally from Billings, Montana,(can you say SMALL town?), but have been living in Phx area in Arizona for the past two years, which was a big change. I like AZ and how lively it is, however I really think there are too many people here and I cannot stand the heat. So....just wondering where KY fits into my realm of knowledge of my small home town and of the rat race here in Phoenix...& how I (a 21 year old who is still figuring out what she wants to do with her life) would fit in with the lifestyle there.
Lexington is smaller than Phoenix, but I can't say how it compares with Billings, as I have never been there. I think you will like it. I live in Winchester, which is the neighboring town. You might want to check it out. It is much cheaper to live in Winchester and you can be in Lexington in 10 minutes. Winchester also has a pretty good beauty school called Motif Academy.

Lexington has some beautiful scenery, lots of outdoor activities/parks/lakes within driving distance. There is also lots of shopping and dining out. If you like the club scene, there are a few of those too, but not as many as other cities. I am also 27 and I love the central KY area. Hope this helps!

I am also looking to move to either Somerset, Lexington, Georgetown, or Nichlosville. Which one is the best?

I have loved living in Lexington for the past 7 years. I have asthma and allergy issues, so Lex isn't the best place for my health, but I don't see a move in the future. There are enough things to keep me entertained, enough safety that I don't sleep with a gun under my pillow, and enough friendly people that I am never bored or lonely. I like the fact that I never know what to expect weather-wise from week to week, and the traffic, though frustrating at times, doesn't give me road rage in the least. If you are willing to make a slight effort to meet new people, you will love the area. This is one of the most beautiful cities I have ever run across, and I would advise anyone considering a move to Kentucky to give this little city of ours a good once-over before making any decisions. Don't jump to conclusions until you have spent a little time here yourself.

I don't currently live there, but I was raised there and didn't leave until my junior year in college.

Do not move to Lexington. This place is gang infested and is becoming worse than South Central L.A. There is nothing to do here. The local shopping is Super Walmart.

I moved to Somerset from Lexington and both have their pros and cons. They are both very clickish. Lexington has more to do on a day to day basis, but you can get twice the house for the same money in Somerset. Somerset also has the lake. My only real negative for Somerset is that the people are more close minded than I would like and the population is not diverse.

However, parts of Lexington are just nasty. There has been an steady growth in the illegal alien population there. Plus, the mayor is a dullard and if you don't like basketball, no one really has anything else to talk about.

Every city has it's share of crime/gang activity. I would think Lexington is WELL below the average in that area. Maybe it is dangerous if you hang out on the wrong side of town, but every place I've been has been safe.

There is a TON of shopping there! I don't see how you can make that comment. Lexington has the largest shopping mall in the state, as well as numerous shops in Hamburg, downtown, and other places. I think it could be said that no other city has as much shopping and dining as Lexington.

Hello,
My husband and I live in SNOW country in Pennsylvania and are thinking of relocating. On paper, Lexington is one of our 4 choices (we have not yet visited). Am looking for some information from residents. We are in our early 50's, middle income, love to golf, shop, eat out, enjoy nature, etc. Why do YOU think Lexington would be a good choice for us? Are the suburban neighborhoods safe and affordable? Are the people friendly to newcomers? We would be most interested in a golf community, probably a patio home priced under $200,000. Is there such a neighborhood there? Thank you so much for your help!
Lexington Kentucky is a great place for anyone to call home. Its beautiful. You mentioned nature. The Red River Gorge and Natural Bridge State park are both about 45 miles south east of Lexington. It is breath taking in summer and winter. People in Lexington are just like any other people in Kentucky. Hospitality is 1st. We welcome you to the bluegrass state and the Horse Capital of the World.
