Living in Kentucky

hi i live in england at the moment. im looking to move to the states in the next couple of years. Can anyone give me an idea to what Kentucky is like?

house sizes / prices?
Weather?
Universities?
things like that..

UNIVERSITIES: University of KY. in Lexington; University of Louisville; Eastern Ky. University in Richmond; Western Ky. University in Bowling Green; several other colleges/universities scattered throughout the state

but i mean like do u get a big detatched house for a decent amount of money... or do most people have small houses cos the large are way too expensive..

and weather... snow? rain? sun? weather warnings? hot? cold?

we get some snow but the last several years we have not gotten much. It can get cold in the winter and hot and humid in the summer. You can buy a nice house under $100,000 with a lil land if you look.

Pikeville has a university down town and a medical school, plus a vocational school. Great doctors, lawyers restraunts, a civic center, a number of hotels, motels, service stations, salons, grocery and discount stores. etc.. The rest of the state is nice as well.
Pikeville also has one of the largest hospitals in the state. It is the center of commerce for the whole of Pike county, the largest county in the state, not to mention Pikeville is also the third largest city in Kentucky. Louisville being the largest then Lexington and then fourth would be Bowling Green. I just thought you should know more than this is a nice place to live. I hate short answers to big questions like this one. That is a big move in my opinion.

I bought my home for 32,000 and remodel it and now the value of it is around 95 grand maybe a hundred.I bought the house I live in at the momment cheap and spent nearly $10,000 fixing it up. It worth way more than that now. If you are looking for a house as a fixer upper you can find them in price ranges as low as $15,000 here is South Eastern Kentucky. I am looking at another house and property as a fixer upper for extra income as rental property. And there are a number of properties for sale all over this great state. I jist love my home town and think other should have a chance to enjoy it for themselves.

I love Kentucky, its beautiful all year round.I wouldnt change states for nothing.You should really come live here if your looking for solitude an friendly people.

No decent shopping, bad class of people. trash.. great deals on property though, a house in that town is valued way below other towns, more house for your money, but not worth the low class people. They've designed the town to never be more than a haven for the "walmart type crowd". overweight moms with their barefoot kids running through the grocery store...discusting

Education: public schools are so far behind,(don't let anyone tell you otherwise, check national statistics).

Colleges: If you want an education go somewhere else. if you like basketball you'll do okay.

Jobs: Expect a "good old boy" network. They think their so "modern" in their thinking, their not.

as you can tell, I live here (relocated 6 years ago, for a job). I grew up in the south, lived in the midwest, and several other places in the states, and traveled the world. I can not recomend Kentucky at all.

What a tacky thing to say, Stuck about any city or town you live in! If you never leave your house, how can you ever get to know the people around you? I would hazzard a guess that any town or city you live in would never be acceptable for you.
I have lived in my City for only 3 years or so. It is not where I was raised, nor was it my choice to live here in the first place, but I love the people I have encountered. They are loving and giving people and are willing to go the extra mile for you if you would only allow them into your heart.
I suspect that your town is the very same way. It is known as Southern Hospitality.
I have family in Kentucky and know Kentuckians to be giving and helping people as well. They go the extra mile and are willing to show you the best and most interesting places in their community.

I was born in Kentucky - Louisville - and lived in a small town in the '60s. Moved away and finished growing up elsewhere. Tried KY again in a small town college. Moved away. Tried it again in 2002. I can't say that I recommend KY for someone coming from as far away as England. Southern Hospitality is a joke for the most part. Although one on one a lot of the people are good as gold, overall you will always be held at arms length and considered suspect. If you are not a fundamentalist christian, you will also find it uncomfortable. Kentucky is not nearly as up to date and forward thinking as it likes to pretend.

Although there is great beauty in the natural surroundings, the humidity and mosquitos will drive you nuts. The difficult racial history of Kentucky is still evident all around you in the way the cities look, in the jobs people do, in the social environment, even in the jokes told at the workplace. And I was at a University!

I can't recommend Kentucky, the state of my birth. And that makes me very sad.

If you had traveled the world then you would have seen that there are far worse places, with a lot less than here. I doubt you have even traveled as far your own front door. People are people and should be respected and protected. You would be glad to live in world where everybody was just like you. No heart, no feeling or emotion. Just full of hate and ignorance.

Stay ignorant and stay out of Kentucky! We don't need you any way!

You don't have a clue of what you are talking about! If you didn't have anything good to say then you shouldn't have typed all of that. It could have saved you a couple of hours. I can tell by your thought processes that you are a tad bit slow. People work the same jobs here as they do every where else. We have the same technology and advancements as everywhere else. Excluding a few small towns that have tiny populations of people. But still they deserves some respect! Especially from some asshole that doesn't even claim his birth pace as his home! You are condeming Kentucky because you have no clue about this state. I doubt you know your own history and heritage. It's ashame that people get on here and demean my home state and make false claims about it. I have lived here all of my life and have been to other cities and states. There is no place on earth like South Eastern Kentucky or any part of KY for that matter. Instead of looking for bad in things you should look for the good.

As you can see by the diatribe above, people here are just like people anywhere else. We all have our opinions, and they differ dramatically in some cases.

With regard to living in the State of Kentucky, it will be what you make of it. There are places here that will remind you of home, and places that will be completely foreign. We have some here who are ridiculously wealthy, and others who are abjectly poor -- with the majority falling somewhere in between.

The landscapes can be breathtakingly beautiful, and there are many of these. They range from mountains covered in fall foliage that defies description, to rocky crags of fearsome beauty, to rolling meadows both farmed and free of the touch of man. Then there are the cities that -- all over the state -- are seeing a surge of interest in renewal.

And, the people ... again, this will be what you make of it. As it is in your own home, in each town, in each city, there are those who will fear anyone from outside and what they bring. And, there are those of us who will embrace knowing you as a new and exciting adventure. If you smile, and are honest, and caring, you will be cared for. If you are yourself trapped by fear and loathing of what you do not know, then -- as with people anywhere -- you will find a harder reception.

I was born here (in Lexington), but moved shortly thereafter to various places in Ohio. When we finally moved back, it was likeing getting my breath back. For me, it is a place of refuge, my home, and I would find it hard to ever leave. And one of my professors in college, born and raised in England, concurs. He came here from Oxford to study under a historian at the University of Kentucky, and he has never left. He loves this state as much (and, in soem cases more) than most naitve sons. And, he is not by any means an ignorant or uneducated fool. This is a man of letters, a Regent's Professor, and a man of refinement. So, you see, we have room for everyone!

One of the few drawbacks I have found living in Kentucky, specifically Adair County, is the lack of a middle class. It is the middle class the typically drives the economy. Without a middle class the economy tends to be stagnant. Depending on your vocation or training you may have difficulty finding employment in most rural areas.

I'm sorry you are not happy here. I am a teacher at a wonderful public school and am proud of our education. There are many states looking at Kentucky as they reform their own education system. Kentucky is not perfect, and the new reform isn't but it's better than a lot others. I live in the Bowling Green area (south central) and love it very much. I grew up in the northern part, near Cincinnati, and would never move back. There are cities nearby to shop in (e.g. Nashville is less than 1 hour) but we still have the "country" atmosphere where everyone helps everyone else and people genuinally care about each other. The weather is beautiful in spring, fall, and early summer. Winters are mild with some snow, when we're lucky! lol

There are several UK transplants here in Adair County. Maybe one of them will get on and post. I think it is the most beautiful place with seasonal changes that are breathtaking. It is rural with not a lot of shopping close but you an always go elsewhere for that. Many places in KY are beautiful. Lexington, Midway, Versailles, Danville and Shelby County in central KY and many places in eastern KY. What kind of a house are you looking for? Do you want animals or a farm? Do you want to be nearby an airport or shopping. We would love to have you here!

Maybe you should start a post like "In England-Want to move-Advice" so that you get some UK experts of the foreign kind instead of UK the university of KY kind.

Adair Co.has a bad drug problem,even Paul Harvey has made comments about the serious drug problem.If Raymond Overstreet is elected District Judge this Nov,I think you will see this problem taken care of.Adair Co. is a good place to retire to,low taxes,good lake for fishing,good school system,and soon will have a interstate highway to connect to.The people are good,hard working people.
