Please stop putting down Southland Christian Church. I work for the VA hospital in Lexington Ky. OUr veterans when they come into the hospital have to indur alot of things, not only are they sick but some have to worry aboult getting tioletries while they are there, because the VA does not supply for them. Also when a patient comes in, some would like to have food brought in from home sometimes, have there special sodas, or whatever. Anyway my point is, SCC has given the hoispital, bags upon bags of toletries so the veteran would not have to buy them, I'm talkng soap, shampoo, shaving cream, tooth paste, and when the patients fridgerator went out on one of the units, before even 2 days had past they were calling to tell us they had a refridgerator for them. I don't know if any of the veterans we treat goes there, but I do know that whenever we call for help, they always come thru. So, I'm really sorry for the person who couldn't pay her rent, maybe you should look for something cheaper in rent, dont live beyond your means. My grandfather is on ss and he hasn't had any cut backs, I think you maybe fibbing a little and not telling the whole story. And no that is not a church I attend, way to big for me, I like the little more family oriented churchs, but, for them to be a big church they do help people alot.

We donated some furniture (really nice and looked new) and found out it had gone to someone who worked in the program where they take donations of furniture. This couple had both parents working, two kids and were doing just fine. They also got a car. I too would like to see how they screen people because if this couple could afford to go on several vacations and build a new house with a basement, why wasn't something said when they were taking the furniture and car? I don't get it.. and I go to the church. I have asked several people about it, but no one seems to have answers other than, "They are a nice couple." The program needs a overhaul when the people who are running it are taking things for themselves.

Also, before anyone says anything about SSI, learn about how much people get. I know a lady who was a stay at home Mom for years and her husband ran off. She had an incurable disease and her doctor put her on SSI... she received $425 a month and $35 on a debit card for food. Tell me how someone is supposed to pay rent and all other bills... let alone spend only $35 on food a month! Pretty crazy if you ask me. Some of the best advice I have ever recieved...educate your self and think before you speak :)

He is not saying they are taking back money, please read what he wrote. SSI did not get a cost of living raise. You can ask your Grandfather and he should have paperwork on it.(They send it out every year and it will say if there is going to be an adjustment.) Also, SSI is based on what you made in your life time.(They send out that nice green form that tells you how much you will be getting when you retire or if something happens to you each year.) A lot of times if you are disabled all of the sudden and can't work, it really is not that much to live on a month...especially if you haven't worked that many years.(Stay at home Moms be aware of this!) I am not sure what the circumstances where with this gentlemen, but please educate you self about SSI before you speak about it.

The fact is that yes that church is big and they have a wealth of resources. However they have a budget and only so much money to give. They can only give so many had outs. There is a reason there is more than one church they cannot supply every one's needs in the surrounding area. I found the lady's response weird and I go there. PEOPLE have bad days say things they shouldnt speak for people they shouldnt. She is not the Head of the church. If you have felt wronged then maybe you could of asked to talk to someone else.

I happen to know Southland Christian Church does great work. They do Jesus Parties and all are invited. They have a tent up in Ashgrove and they help alot of people there. I know people they have bought school clothes for their kids. They give out free lunches. they hold church services for all that is welcome to come. They have helped alot of people there from help paying their bill, food, clothing, and they even give out packs with toothpaste, toothbrushes, laundry soap, bath soap, ect in there. They have helped people clean up their yards and fix their houses. I seriously doubt anyone in Ashgrove attends church regularly? They are all could use some religion with all the drugs, child abuse, fighting, crime and everything there. Alot of these people expect the things this church is doing there tho. In my own opinion, I can see a church helping someone who has lost everything in a fire, or a single mother struggling to keep a a home for her children, someone who has obviously hardship, not someone who sit around on their butts all day and expect someone else to pay their bill for them. I understand why churches aren't trusting anymore!!!! Thanks to Southland christian church for the work you do!!!!

There is a difference in a church and a social club. You can have your beliefs and not go to church.., that don't make you any less of a person. You are God's child and HE will see you get what you need. If one door is closed to you .. Pray ... And God will help you to the path you are to take :).

first of all: why are you assssuming that this person "sits around on their butt all day"??? second of all: you do not take the well man to the doctor. maybe this person has worked for 62+ years, and can't anymore. and maybe the "church" is being led just a lil outside of what Jesus would lead us to do. the only time in the Bible that Jesus was ever angry was when they made a "market place of his Father's house". it seems that is what every church is doing now days, fund raiser for this, donate for that, on and on and on. it's terrible. and now a person who is not a member can not receive help.... uhh isn't that what "spreading the Gospel" is about???? oh but thats right... they are already 10,000+ members strong, they dont need any "new" Christians. this is the perfect example of a dead church.... status in the community, and fashion shows. if you really want to know your LORD look up a first century Bible. figure out where your word came from, who EDITED it, CHOPPED, AND CUT IT. then pray about it. may GOD bless everyone in that church committee. to the poster of this, did they offer you any resources of where you might go? or maybe ask if they could pray with you about the situation? hmmm, haven't heard about it yet.. seems they could've tried to fake it at least. i wish you luck, and hope that this is not cheapening you idea of what a REAL CHRISTIAN should be. cuz it ain't. Christ would not have handled things this way. i swear Paul and Mary Magdalene would be cast down and thrown out of town in today's churches. SAD TRULY SAD

I think that it's funny that they want 10% of your well-earned money, and that you need to fill out an APPLICATION and show them paycheck stubs. It says in the bible when GOD was talking to one of his disciples that you should worship me in what I have made, not in what was made by thy fellow man. Still to this day many people don't seem to understand that worship is in you, not a building. As for the lady, I am extremely sorry, however, there are smaller churches in the surrounding areas that are more than willing to lend you a helping hand. It may not be much, but anything is better than nothing at 6 FLAGS UNDER JESUS!

I recently went there looking for help with my rent, due to all the Social Security cut backs,it has become very hard for me to pay my rent and anything else for that matter.I went in and asked the lady at the desk about it and she said that we dont help anyone that dosent go to church here.I aske you is that a Christian act, I dont go to church at the moment, but i do believe in God and have been saved. I couldnt believe my ears.I had proof of what i get from Social Security and a letter from my landlord. But we never got that far,I was turned away without any questions.I understand there are over 10,000 that go to that church. I know im not the only one having problems now, money problems, alot of other people are to.I have never asked a church in my life for help.Just my experience with them, anybody else had this experience also?
I just went there and I don't attend that church and they paid 500 for a deposit and 450 for first months rent plus the deposit for water and electric. so maybe u just didn't do it right.

Southland Christian not only helps 'members' as well as 'nonmembers'. But they also help the homeless and they have a Medical facility in downtown Lexington to help those less fortunate people who need medical care and can't afford it and are w/out insurance. Along with their 'dollar club' which goes to help someone in need. A few examples would be....someone with a terminal illness, or someone who's home burned down and they lost everything. They've helped tornado victims. Hurricane Katrina victims. They've rebuilt homes for some of these people. They still have people helping with Hurricane Katrina.
I'm sorry 'Unbelievable' that they couldn't help you. I hope your problems take a turn for the better. And that you do get the help you need.
My question for those of you who put down churches Who don't help 'just anybody' who asks for it. Would you be able to pay 'just anybody's' bills who ask for money? Or you want to know that they actually needed it?

Everyone bashes Southland until they attend a service. You can not go through life expecting people to pick up your slack for you. And dear if its such an old computer idt you'd be picking up wifi, unless of course your paying for upgrades. Or your just another person that takes and takes until all your needs are filled. Southland doesn't just pay random peoples bills, they help people that really really need it. The demand for donated money is way higher than the rate of donators!

They don't have you fill out an application. Nor do they make you show them your check stub. Unless that's a new policy that they've adopted.

I just called Southland Christian Church to try to find help for my daughter to get furniture. The phone prompt gives an extension for members and one for non members.I chose the one for non-members. The recording said something to the effect of "Due to the limited amount of resources we can not help the general public." The recording then says to call United Way, so no they do not help everyone. I am not bashing them, just telling the truth. If you do not believe me call them after or before hours and listen to their voice mails. Press 3 for the Helping Through him ministry. Next prompt press 2. Next prompt press 2 again.

The members at Southland worship one thing...the green God. I've had the privilege (not) of working for three business owners who were members of Southland. Collectively the biggest hypocrites, liars, tax evaders...and money worshippers..on earth.

George: I receive SSI, so I can tell you that it's not based on what you've earned in your lifetime. In order for a person to receive SSI they have to be disqualified for regular Social Security. That IS based on what a person earns in their lifetime. SSI is a needs based program, meaning that if you're disabled before the required number of work credits is put in,(I think it's about 4-5 years) you qualify for SSI or sometimes disability. Getting disability is more difficult. Usually it's the same amount of money as SSI but you also qualify for Medicare. Also, once you're on SSI you get a lifetime qualification for Medicaid. And some states also have a stipend that goes along with the Federal monthly SSI payment. PA had one. KY doesn't. The government says that you're allowed to work a certain number of hours each week but I worked 20 hours a week when I lived in PA at $5 an hour & I just got finished paying Social Security back because I didn't claim it until the end of the year. This was over 5 years ago and it took me 4 years to pay them back. If we're lucky we get a cost of living increase each year. This year it will be about $11. The government does NOT base SSI on the number of people in your household. The money is for you. If you get married & your new spouse has a job then there is a chance that you'll lose your SSI. If the spouse's income is too large then the SSI is gone.
