Ridership is declining because women that work in the city do not want to have to transfer at Marin City.
I refuse to ride the bus therefore. When I was in high school, buses to the city and transfers never happened in Marin City. What genius decided to place the transfer point in the most dangerous place in the entire county? |

I was there when it was the Flea Market. The Center was anticipated with bountiful good will. However, daily support of the business'(that have come and gone) has diminished to zero support. The poor customer service, no matter where you went, and the above mentioned fear of robbery or physical assault at the Bus Transit, the Center itself, or adjacent streets, means never returning by me, my wife, or family. You give respect, you get respect.
They get what they give. Nothing from us. |

If the people riding it will not pay enough to keep it running, maybe it isn't such a needed service after all.
You both are spot on, except I also think neither gender of commuting workers want to risk being robbed or assaulted. Shame on the politically correct powers-that-be for destroying a viable option to automobiles. |
The people who ride it within the county cannot afford to drive. The riders on the commute runs help to lessen traffic on the roads. They are not the problem. The problem is the "Bridge" District which supports the bridge, ferries, and buses. The bridge toll goes up, the ferry and bus fares go up, bus schedules are trimmed or eliminated, and there is still a shortage of funds. |
The problem--at least in THIS case--is not the bridge district. They're paid to operate the local routes by Marin Transit which, like most if not all public transit agencies, operates at a loss. What goes in the farebox covers about 30% of what it costs to keep a bus on the road. For the local routes, the rest was supposed to come from Measure A funds which are now drying up. For GGT's commute and transbay routes, it comes from bridge tolls and some small federal and state grants (which ain't happening much anymore, either). No tax dollars, per se. If there was any money to be made running a bus system in Marin, Greyhound would still be doing it--but they saw the writing on the wall and got out in 1971. And Freida...when you die it doesn't matter if you're going to heaven or going to hell. You'll still have to transfer at Marin City. |
The whole point is Frieda is alive, and will continue to thrive with a full long-lived life, by NOT frequenting the Bus Transit stop in Marin City.
Leave it up to you to bring death into the topic, & trying to smear her well being for expressing her honest opinions. Please go hang out there for awhile, and no one will have to read your blah for much longer. |
The problem is they want everyone to ride the bus but they cut service to make it impossible.
Suppose you live in Larkspur and want to go to a movie at the Rafael Theater. How will you get home? No, by the time the movie is over the last 22 has already left and now they are going to eliminate even that one so even a 7 p.m. show is impossible. See Marin Transit? |
Oops...sorry, "Got It Wrong." The whole problem with using dry humor or sarcasm is that there will always be at least one person who just...doesn't...GET it. In this case, that would be you. Obviously the sight of a dead person holding a transfer at Donahue and Terners would be scarier than the gang-bangers and criminals from just up the hill. That said, let me re-state what I meant--which was not intended as a slight to Freida (and you misspelled her name, by the way). I happen to agree with her. But, barring a miracle, I doubt that we'll ever see a major transfer point in southern Marin OTHER than Marin City. Here are the top three reasons for this: (1) There is no money to build it. (2) There is no money to build it. (3) Politics (I include this only because the Manzanita Parking Lot makes perfect sense to me, but apparently some politician already said no to the idea awhile back). Now go take a look at the results of the IJ poll asking if readers used local transit. As of this writing, only 17% said yes. THAT's what the Marin Transit District should be looking at, as well as working with Golden Gate to improve the connection times between Transbay and Local buses, and figuring out a way to move the transfer point OUT of Marin City. But they won't. It's much easier to cut service even more and blame it on someone or something else. |

It seems to me that the last commentaries have only focused on southern Marin. What about the rest of the county? And by the way poster, what part of the county are You from? "Most dangerous place in the entire county"?No,not neccesarily, I used to attend Church there once apon a time..where did you say you were from in Marin? |
