RI students to cops: don't brand our party houses

Full story: NewsTimes.com

The punishment, renters and homeowners in this beach town say, is tantamount to a scarlet letter: A large orange sticker plastered by police on homes that host raucous parties.

soon the word will go out that the best parties are in houses with stickers and kids will start competing for them...

...with bragging rights going to houses that "win" the most stickers!

you know, only an adult could come up with this scheme.

When I was a college student, I would have seen it as a "Badge of Honor".
As a URI parent, I sure as heck would not want to find one on my kid's house though.

The answer to the problem is simple. Bring back the draft. At least a third of these students do not return the following year. Put them in the military where they might attain some responsibility in their lives.

I LOVE THIS!

What these students don't understand is that they are GUESTS in a community and they need to respect that. Sadly, some don't. When they sign up to go to school at URI - it is a contract in that the students must abide by the school rules. So, it is not as if they "own" the premises they are renting. I have had the problem of loud parties and it is a pain! The police are doing a great service for those people that actually LIVE in the community. The school could also draft a strict off campus party policy - that is if there are 2 or so infractions they would be expelled.

It's a shame that the authorities and the town have to go to these lengths to get a point across! Nuisance abatement laws were enacted for the common good of the community. If you are not willing to follow them, then you should be shamed!!! Then, if you don't like it...remove yourself and go find another community that will put up with your loud and lawless ways!

It's time for today's youth to grow up and take some responsibility and accountability for their actions!

How exactly are stickers helping to keep rowdy kids in check? By stigmatizing them?

Kids are going to party. If you don't like it, don't move into a college town. It's not like URI appeared there overnight.

Right. Most military recruits are excessive drinkers and in too many cases, the damage done with serving, makes it a life long habit.

If the parties are a nuisance, or dangerous, arrest people or issue the appropriate summonses and let the courts sort it out.

This is crazy. Cops are not supposed to be able to arbitrarily decide a sentence, or a punishment. If I had a sticker slapped on my house, I'd take them to court in a heartbeat.

The cops are not arbitrarily sentencing or punishing anyone. They are enforcing an ordinance or a law!

Piss them off by getting more stickers yourself and cover your home with them. Imagine a yellow house with hunderds of orange dots all over it.

Students DO understand, guess what it's not in their neighborhood.I would post a poster for all the 'prospect employers' about the activity that goes
on with the students on this campus and see where that ends up period..community action. If they they (students) want to be stupid, get a job elsewhere...

None of you can comprehend the disrespect that these students have exhibited. I grew up in one of the neighborhoods "down the line" as they call it. When I lived there as a kid, most of the students were respectful of the homes and residents. I played hoops with many of them. Last year I moved back to my old home while I performed renovations on my present house and I was disgusted by the behavior of the students as well as the landlords lack of responsibility. Those students would roam the streets an hop house to house until 4am hootin' and hollering. If we called the police, they would shift to a house across the street until the police were gone. The police would even witness drunks driving away without ticketing the students. After calling the police every thursday thru sunday, the police tended to take longer to respond and allow my family to be victimized. When I confronted the police about the issues, they just said that the students got the ACLU involved and thier hands were tied! What about our rights as residents? That place is an absolute trainwreck right now with the slumloads on the town council, the students maintaining a control with no consequence for their actions, and the police inability to enforce anything. They ruined the properties by driving on the lawns. The entire neighborhood and town is becoming an absolute shite show. It;s a shame.

Arrests, a drunk tank, and fines might help solve the problem, Did when I was a kid. Of course the punishment at home far outweighed the justice system back then too. Sadly not much parenting going on these days. We did our share of drinking but were a lot more careful about where and when.

Daily Horoscope for December 19

Cancer

Hold it! You need to approach things in a calm, controlled manner today otherwise you're likely to get yourself into a state in no time at all. That's especially likely if you're trying to meet a deadline because you'll start to panic and then become all fingers and thumbs. You might also get extremely ratty with anyone who gets in your way or asks stupid questions. Come on, is that fair?
