New fishing pier

I visited the new King- Lincoln Park fishing pier at the foot of Jefferson Avenue in Newport News 10 days after it opened on July 7 and interviewed some of the 50-plus recreational anglers fishing the new, free ...

The City did a fine job with the new fishing pier. It was done quickly and cheaply. Best of all it is open to the public for free. That is quite a contrast from Mr. Allen's home City.

Hampton and it's ex-mayor made a complete and total mess out of the rebuilding of the old Buckroe pier. Five years after it was taken out by the hurricane construction is now under way. Sadly, this pier will cost the public $8-10 to fish. That is nearly impossible for a family on a tight budget. Perhaps the City should have thought of that before they decided to spend 8 million dollars on the land and construction for this project.

I used to like going to Buckroe to fish but I simply cannot afford that much money for my family to fish. Mr. Allen maybe you and your rich Hampton friends can afford that price tag, but as for me I'll fish in Newport News where the City is trying to look out for its' citizens and trying to promote fishing among all people.

Bob, I agree this is good and commendable news. I read that it's lighted; do you know how late it's open?

The pier is open from 7a.m. until 10 p.m. Plenty of time for everyone to get some quality fishing done. I agree Hampton should have tried to do a better job with Buckroe, but that city is so screwed up.

The pier in Hampton is a typical example of the waste created by Kearney during his terrible tenure as mayor. If a competent leader had been in charge it would have been built years ago for 1/3 of the price. But what does he care its only money. What a bone head.

Congrats to Newport News by the way on a great job with their pier. I was there yesterday and caught a ton of fish. I won't be paying ten bucks in Buckroe either.

I went down and saw it today. It's really nice. So is the other pier in King-Lincoln. I didn't get by to see the one at 16th St.

I saw the pier too. It really is nice. I am ashamed to say that I am a Hampton resident, and that our city is so messed up. Kearney was an embarassment as mayor and he personally caused our fishing pier not to be built for so long. Now we are supposed to pay alot of money while Newport News residents get to fish for free. It really shows you that one person can really screw things up for an entire city. I am happy that he is no longer in charge. Maybe things will get better now.

I went down there to check it out today and it's really nice (NEEDS TRASH CANS!!!). I didn't see a single thug, drug dealer, or whatever some folks seem to be deathly afraid of, just people fishing. I timed the tides all wrong so all I caught were a few small Spot. I will be back Sunday to catch the rising tide.

For the record, I used to be an annual member ($200/year if memory serves) of the old Buckroe Fishing Pier, but I'll now drive a bit further to this one since it's FREE.
