I heard it was horrible the way the DEA came into the classrooms of this very small all male school wearing bullet proof vests, dragging drug dogs, rifles, etc. and literally pulled kids out their chairs. Sure what these kids did was stupid, but HSC is at the bottom of the drug teir.
THE DEA should concentrate on the real dealers. LARGER SCHOOLS. It's a shame that in our judicial system, these boys face 40 years in prison, when murderers get 10. Also, sounds like a similar situation as the Duke case but with a twist. The Prince William County Sheriff is running for office and actually called the DEA back in August to come and insert an undercover agent in the school. See, a security officer at HSC is also running for sheriff. See the coincidence? I think he should concentrate on Farmville and not HSC for his drug king pins. I hope these kids can get good lawyers. Not all the boys at HSC are spoiled rich kids. |

The point here is not whether these kids are wealthy , the point is that they made a serious mistake. Rich or poor, we all make mistakes. I don't think their is a "conspiracy theory" behind the bust, but remember, this isn't the first time HSC has been raided by the DEA. It happened back in 1993, as well. Before that, it was UVA that got busted. I am a firm believer in giving people second chances. HSC is a good school and graduates a lot of very successful young men...I just hope the student body learns from this awful event.

It is ridiculous to take such a small school and arrest students that probably had no idea how serious their actions were.Drugs can be found at any university. Not to mention that the dirtball official who is orchestrating his run for a sheriff's re-election has turned the bust into a fabulous self righteous campaign for his own selfish goals.Timing is everything here. Public officials need to be accountable and serve some time in jail as well if they think this is the way to win an election. I think it is fairly easy to catch someone dealing drugs these days in large or small amounts so this sad sack official won't get my vote here. Hopefully, whether rich or poor, these young men can win another chance in society and not have to go to jail. Everyone does mistakes and deserves a chance to make things right. Hampden Sydney is a great school however, it is an easy target for some undercover cops trying to win an election campaign for their bosses. Talk about corruption, even in Farmville. |

It is a very large drug school, and this is not the first time this has happend there. If they want to deal drugs they can go to jail simple as that.

You are a complete moron The school has a 1,000 students. It may seem large to you because you went to a school for Microcephalics, but by "normal people" college standards it is very small. |

I graduated from H-SC and it is a great school. A few idiots got caught, but the DEA did not need to raid classrooms and put on a show. Our tax dollars hard at work busting a few madras clad stoners is a joke.

I was there that day. And just to clear one thing up...the DEA and other law enforcement officals did not "raid" classrooms as it was stated above. They simply knocked on the door and asked the teachers if they could speak with the given student. This was a very low-key operation, meaning that law enforcement were trying to make every attempt not to draw a lot of attention while on campus. Yes, officers did wear bullet-proof vest while on campus but that is for their own protection. They do not know the students, nor did they know if the students had weapons. Also, no weapons were drawn, nor were there drugs dogs being dragged around.
Hampden-Sydney is a small school as far as student population is concerned but it is a largely known for the drugs that can be found on campus, which is what, I think, Jim was trying to say above. Furthermore, to say that the police should have focused their efforts somewhere else is crazy. Most of these kids were charged federally, which means the possession or distribution of whatever drug was a significant amount. Sure, there are serious drug problems in the community, but problems on campus needed to be addressed also. I do not think this is an issue of wealth but an issue of stupidity. These kids had everything going for them and made bad choices. Would most of you have the same reaction if this happened at an all male college, with mostly african-american students who came from less than fortuante homes? The answer, for most, will be NO...most would think they got what they deserved. Most of the kids at HSC are not sorry for what they did but for the fact they got caught. In order to catch the king-pin you have to start at the bottom. As far as someone using this for the campaign, you're probably correct, however, wrong is wrong and these men were wrong for selling drugs...end of story. |

Has anything happened as far as students being released or charged? Any court dates?

As far as I know the ones who were charged federally went to court that day, but I am sure most are out on bond. As far as court dates. I personally have no idea

Thanks for the help. Now another question since I am so curious, what was the bail?

You do not know what you are talking about. Your comment came off as being an ignorant statement from someone who knows little to nothing abuout Hampden Sydney and the men who go there. I am sorry if you have had some TERRIBLE personal experience which has clearly scarred you for life and made you hate Hampden Sydney guys. I was personally affected by what happend at Sydney and your comments are just rude and make you sound like you are jelous that you do not attend HSC. I am sorry that you do not have a trust fund and will have to work for the rest of your life. Thank you for your time. |

To the sydney brother who was there that day. Remember the saying about when you assume? Your assumption that these kids were arrested because of large quantities is completely off the mark. Some yes, others no. It was not a matter of going over a certain weight to be charged federally. It was a man made decision who would be charge state or federally. If it was an issue of weight everyone knows that Longwood is where alot of sydney stuff comes from. Why weren't they charged federally? This is more political then crime fighting. Most of those kids wish they could take back what has happened and change day 1. I know a few and some of these guys just got screwed. They will take accountability for what they did but the Prosecutors get away with overbearing sentences because of assholes who say guilty throw em away. Much larger drug crimes are never charged federally and the people are releaded on probation in the state system.

To those who made comments regarding "rich" boys or other remarks clearly not related to the arrest charges. Unfortunately for you this shows your jealousy issues and insecurities just as Megan stated. You obviously were left out of four square or the last pick for red rover in your kinder years. Jealousy is a diease! Instead of slighting these young men go get yourself some help.

None, you are an idiot. Expending that kind of Federal resources to investigate and bust a bunch of Hampden-Sydney boys is a JOKE !!! Consider the collateral effect of this bust. Ruined future economic prospects (and future tax revenues), cost to the families, and cost to the court system (oh yeah, my tax bucks, again), and the public perception of the school; and for what? A little of over an Ounce of Blow and 2 Pounds of Pot.
Way to go Feds !!! You blew the lid on the Plaid Gang ! Think big picture None, you Horse's ASS! The bucks spent to investigate your brother students in Rhetoric class, could have been used to bust big-time Heroin Dealers who are funding the Taliban. Platitudes (look that word up, None) like "Wrong is wrong" is for Assholes. |

Sneaky Pete, what is the Five Dollar Club
BTW - I'm a Theta Bra as well |

Those kids got screwed. What if they were really good people? Nobody would really care. It's all about the image of the government and as stated before, the political reasons. What kind of cold blooded asshole would ruin someone's life a month before college graduation?
-and "NONE"- you sound like a fairy. Don't justify the government's bullshit. |
