Newport Board Candidates

Cincinnati, OH

#1 Oct 23, 2012
We are the four candidates running to take back Newport schools. We sent out a handout that several of the current board members have attempted to say is all untrue or gossip - so this is our response and these are our sources: Cincinnati Enquirer, the board minutes that are freely available to the public upon request, the Kentucky Department of Education, the audit report done by a private auditing firm for the Board of Education, and the Office of Education Accountability, several current and former employees of the district, as well as four former board memebers. We are not puppets as Ms. Sheffel is trying to say. Every decision we make is based on what we believe is best for our children. Our main difference between our positions and that of the current board members is: we are against financial waste and we believe that until the Newport schools are performing at above-average levels there should be a process whereby students can opt to attend other public schools and have their SEEK funds follow them. We believe that our children deserve the best education possible. We believe that with our strong leadership Newport can create that educational environment. To accomplish these goals we must have more than one vote of like minded people. That is why we are running together. We ask for your support. Dave Amanns, Shawn Thacker, Theresa Miller, Rob Rummel.

When the good kids leave, Newport Schools will have no chance at being above average. If you win, it will be up to you to fix it. What is your plan for that?

Do Newport teachers only teach to the "good" kids?

Keeping kids financially captive is not a plan to improve the schools.

A real plan starts with focusing the spending on the classroom and holding the superintendent accountable for results. We haven't had a school board perform these basic functions for years.

What we had for years was a Superintendent and Central Office staff who blew tons of smoke and were masters at mirror magic. The board is REGULARLY lied to - shown fake stats - and the truth is withheld. MAP scores are one example. Students are doing MUCH WORSE than the MAP scores that are given to the board show. Yet, the board is asked to vote on endless WASTE by the central office who never really admit that what they are doing ISN'T WORKING. The board is never shown the real breakdown of which teachers are getting results AND WHICH ARE NOT. This way the board never knows of the superintendent is putting the right teachers on corrective actions plans or not, or firing the underperforming teachers - or just allowing them to get tenure! There are plenty of teachers in the district WHO DO NOT DESERVE TENURE. They are known to their peers.

I spoke to Mr Amans he is a very nice genuine person. He came to my house to put up a sign and I said NO, after talking with him I agreed. I think we need a strong individual to represent our schools although we did not agree on everything, I liked the fact he had strong convictions and stands by his beliefs. You definately have my vote. Lets see what you can do.

What do you mean you only make $62,000 and are underpaid? You also get a pretty benefits package, many days off during the year, and summers off. Heck, you really make $87,500 if you count all the time OFF WORK for the rest of the year. You no work - you no get paid. Walmart is hiring greeters, but they require better personalities than you have.

Most of Newport lives on less, and doesn't get the summers off.

Perhaps when student test scores rise, your pay will too! You don't deserve anything, you have to earn it. And wow, with grammar and punctuation as you displayed in your post, it is obvious why Newport schools are doing so bad! If you do not want to do your best as a teacher with what you are given, find a new job.

WTF? Newport's pay scale is among the HIGHEST in Kentucky. They don't need another red cent of tax money.

And I don't know of anyone that gets a pay raise without performance. Newport teachers should make minimum wage with the product they are putting out!

Not many responders here are from Newport.
We need to treat everyone equally. Why not send all of the children to Fort Thomas???
You can't improve Newport Schools by splitting up the students. Remember, it is "Divide and Conquer", not "divide and build".
I won't support the Reciprocity idea. It offers nothing to Newport, only something to the few that have no confidence in Newport Schools.
