Why is Newport School District spending money for legal fees (and other costs) to challenge the Ky law that requires the Superintendent of the school district to live in the District?(IE - you can't be the Newport superintendent if you live in Ohio) If that is the law, and a condition of employment, why would Newport be spending money that they dont have, in order to argue, in court, for the law to be changed. If the current Superintendent agreed to be bound by those conditions when he accepted the job, shouldnt he comply with the agreement that he made? Or he should resign? Or, is the school district really not fighting this issue, and this is just a rumor, intended to undermind the superintendent? If they are fighting this law, I would hope that the Superintendent is required to pay back these costs to the District if the court upholds the current law.

My question is: Is there something else going on, that we don't know about? I agree, if a lot of money is being spent to fight the issue,(law), then what a waste of money. Is he really that great of a superintendent that he is worth all of this? or what else is he involved in that benefits him or others, being in that position?

I dont know the current superintendent nor do I have a opinion about him. That being said I think it is wise to fight to amend any law restricting potential candidates for the job. The job of superintendent is a administrative one and rather or not the person doing the job lives in the city would have no impact on job performance. Why would we want to narrow the field of potential candidates to just those who find homes they like within the city limits?

It isn't a new law, when he took the job he knew what the law was. He chose to ignore it and our board has been supporting him. What a waste of taxpayers money!

I would suggest if you have children in the Newport schools get them out or get involved!

To my understanding, and maybe I am incorrect, but Newport is not fighting this law. The superintendent is. He's fighting it while he is breaking it. The board is allowing him to use the schools money to pay his lawyer fees. So maybe in a roundabout way that is considered the Newport BOE fighting it but I don't see it that way. I see it as a board who have their heads up their @$$e$ and are allowing this superintendent to get away with whatever he wants.

There must be more to it because it would be much cheaper just to rent a cheap apt and list that as his primary residence.

The NIS district is paying for his defense. Yes the board attorney has work on some of it. But from the beginning the superintendent’s defense by his lawyers (from Covington) has been paid by district money. They are on the payables; you can view it by going to any of the minutes and agenda's on the NIS website. His attorneys are also listed in all court documents. You can look there as well.
