Gardena and San Pedro schools are high on takeover list

get rid of federal testing. it means nothing and only encourages teachers to focus on whats on the test, and not what tools/education students need for real life.

return to basics! teach math and english...not political ideology!

stop cramming algebra down their throats! 99.9% of kids will never use it. if you are going to offer it...it should be in 10th grade or higher.

stop thinking that more time in the classroom will improve things.

just a few suggestions.

Starts at home. Most of these kids dont go to school to learn. Too busy on their phones, and making trouble. The worst kids get all the attention when the rest are there to fail.

Who has been running these schools while they were going down the tubes? This is an absolute disgrace. I suppose it mirrors schools in Mexico.

Here is how to solve the problems at these schools:

1) Quit bussing kids in. I am sorry, I do not care if they are a great football player, they do not belong at a school for SAN PEDRO students. There are not 4000 kids between the ages of 14-18 in San Pedro.

2) Enforce discipline. If a kid gets in a fight, arrest him. Make him pay for what he did.

3) Hold the individual parents accountable for al students under 18. If their child is in a gang, send them to juvenile hall, jail, or to Jefferson or Locke.

4) Bring back shop classes. Kids need these classes and the reason why the failure rate is so high is that these classes are not available. Require the kids to get a 2.0 average in their other classes to take these classes, and I guarantee you you will see grades go up.

5) Lastly, end social promotion. Yes elementary school teachers get off of your butts and make sure they know their times tables up through 12 by heart and how to read before they leave your school. 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students should know this, and it is not the job of those teachers to teach 3rd and 4th GRADE SKILLS!!!

They have a use for Algebra. For example - if a shipment of crack came in a 20 k bag and Johnny had to split this bag into 1.5 k, how many baggies would Johnny have to sell on the street at $10 before the cops bust him?

Accountability is needed before anything can improve....parents quit letting the kids run YOUR household and schools you must stress displine and enforce it with no mercy, zero tolerance!
Too many people point fingers at others when they really need to take a good look at themselves first and while your at it make your kids do the same.
Sometimes life can be tough...deal with it!

What is sad is GHS use to be a well respected school 25 years ago. Good academics and athletics programs. Some of the fault is beyond GHS control. Parents who don't take education seriously for their kids, elementary schools that are under prepared for low level learners and kids who mostly come from low income families. At this point anything is worth a try and I would welcome any independent operator who is willing to take on this mess.

The district has given up and is hoping private companies can make things better. More discipline and a longer school calendar seem like good starting points.

One can only hope that things improve because things are bad now.

I also graduated from GHS many years ago. The culture has changed completely on the campus. Students no longer respect their elders, constantly walk around the campus out of class and create problems for other students who want to get an education. There is no LEADESHIP in there. Staff members are scared to confront students for fear of being assaulted (this has happened before). Administrators are scared of ghetto parents who come their demanding that their student, who has just been released from juvie for the third time, return to GHS. These students put other students at risk.
They need to stop bringing in students from other areas. This only causes drama between rival gangs there.
I personally welcome someone else to take over the school because the lead administrators have let this school go to down the drain. It's a sad time in the life of a Mohican.

If you know the right people you don't have to pass the test...just pay up and your in. That's the only algebra we need.

Spanish as a first language in the home doesn't help. How can the parents teach their kids if they can't comprehend the english vocabulary. Stop appeasing the aclu and start ENGLISH in the home... or basically, most hispanics especially low income don't care about education - too busy making a living and depending on the schools to do it.

You guys talk like u guys know how a school works. You want to demand this demand that. But, this is why public schools continue to have problems. We have kids who don't do homework, who don't study, who slide by because their parents don't feel it's necessary. Their kids get free breakfast, lunch, & day care. Until we allow the schools and teacher to basically take welfare away & require them to come in & stay with their teacher, or stay after school an hour. Nothing will change. Teachers are doing their job, it is the kids & parents who have to put the effort forth. Trust me, I'm a parent who puts a lot of time in for my kids & I notice the difference between mine & other kids.

You can help some of the people some of the time, but not all of the people all of the time, so if you offer help and it is not accepted, then you have done your part. We as a society know what has to be done. We try and we try to share our knowledge with our youngsters, but if they are not in a receptive mode, then it is upon them to gain the necessary knowledge that it takes to be successful in life.

In a supressed area such as Gardena and San Pedro, there is little for the young people who live there to aspire to, thus poor attendance, poor grades, and poor attitude. None of these qualities serve to inspire our children to a higher degree of education.

The removal of educational funds only serve to exacerbate the situation. Good eduction depends upon good and strong funding. If we the public fail to fund, then the end result will be failing students and drop-outs as well.

I'm so not a hater. My family, including myself, have been working on the Waterfront for a long time we just don't feel the need to drive flashy cars or brag about our job. We know how blessed we are. I'm just getting tired of people assuming that because I'm a longshoreman that I must be a uneducated,alcoholic,drug addict that makes alot of money for doing nothing and it's comments like yours and many others that plant this stereotype into the publics mind. You my friend need to count your blessings and not rub them in others faces.

it all begins at home. parents, teach your children to respect others, and enforce that education is the most important thing they can get. Education should be a childs only job
