What a bunch of losers. this is soooooo wrong that people who refuse to GROW UP, are getting rewarded for it. They should be in JAIL for being such a pain in the butt!!!!!
This country needs to take the kid gloves off when dealing with CRIMINALS!!!!!!

If you could make money just for making an arse of yourself you would be quite wealthy by now...

If you haven't broken the law you are not a criminal, dear. Quietly holding up a sign is not a violation of any law. If you read every word of the article, you'd know it was OTHERS who started yelling.

Perhaps you should move to a country where people are thrown in jail for no reason, there are a few that would welcome your attitude.

The town was the one that violated the law (heard of the Constitution?) by arresting these people when they hadn't violated any law.

Only if you're arrested for doing it. So looks like for you it's gonna continue to be a hobby, and not a source of income.

Has Brattleboro ever met a civil case it didn't lose?

So, free speech isn't free at the time, because the cops take you away and then later the charges are dismissed. This is pretty common around the country to stifle dissent using the police. The difference here in VT is that a new policy will go into affect and the settlement shows that their civil liberties were violated.

You don't have to agree with them or their cause (I personally think one of them is kind of a jerk) to applaud the rule of law and recognition of Constitutionally protected free speech.

I think it's unethical for them to accept money, that it cheapens their cause and makes them seem like they're looking for something for nothing. Just to have the town pay the court fees and lawyer fees should be enough, but then to say they will continue the suit unless they get money, well thatís just low.

Whadaya know. Another VY/Entergy employee 'weighing in'. Or just another 'neutral' observer? From hey guess where? Little Rock.

'Unethical'? Ha ha. They recieved just compensation for their inconvenience and violation of their rights, being arrested and treated like common criminals for exercizing their civil rights.

Unfortunately, the only thing those who violate rights or otherwise infringe upon or cause harm to others-is money.

Hopefully those who cost taxpayers money will be seen as the liability they are, heads will roll and these types can find an occuption suitable to their aptitude.

Being in law enforcement already, the specialty of corrections often has a shortage of employees. Their talent may be better utilized in that setting.

It was 'unethical' and unlawful for the police to arrest them and treat them as criminals for doing what our constitution guarantees citizens of our
country-freedom of speach which includes peaceful protest.

This is the USA, not China. We are not a fascist dictatorship-yet.

Only in Vermont, an ambulance chaser teams up with the whack brains at ACLU and manages to get four mealy mouth malcontents money form Brattleboro who naturally and weakly settles out of court.$500.00?
What about the hugh increase in liablity insurance they were just complaining about and was caused by all the out of court setttlements.

This is better than the Howdy Doody Show!

They are only considered mealy-mouth malcontents by those who do not respect the rights of others. Or, if they work for Entergy/VY.

The ACLU quite selective in the cases they choose to become party to or represent.

While ACLU members have in the past noted the regularity of citizens rights being trampled upon by law enforcement in VT, how many cases are they actually involved in?

Although I do not know for certain, I would bet bet they are very few.

I respect the rights of others and do not work(or ever have)for VY/Entergy. In your thinking, they must have about a million or so employee's. I feel for the rights of the Police officers and the taxpayers that have to foot the bill for this prolonged foolishness.

I am often shocked and amazed at how many people on this board do not grasp this fundamentally American concept.

You would lose your bet. Despite the propaganda from the anti-ACLU baboons, the ACLU takes on a very wide variety of cases involving a very wide range of defendants.

Well that's something I wish more people understood about the ACLU. It's not some monolithic, homogenous organization run from some kind of central authority.

Vermont is quite liberal, mostly white...the ACLU there is going to behave differently than say the ACLU of Florida, and have different issues to deal with.

I agree they should not have been arrested, but it happened, and they successfully proved themselves right, and their record is expunged, and they got the thing they really wanted, attention, their message was plastered all over the local news. The system worked, up till the point they demanded money, then it shows that they got greedy and are no better than the people they protest. They could have earned respect for the cause, instead they come off as greedy opportunist manipulating the system to get what they don't deserve.

Right and how long were you living off the state while you were incarcerated? I'd rather a few protesters get a few bucks than have some drug dealer living off the dole.

Like I said, the only thing some ppl or these companies and govts from local to federal understand is what they can or will lose in a lawsuit.

If there's no money involved and heads don't roll, they do not give a sh@@.

The paltry amount they recieved is a drop in the bucket and well deserved. Hopefully may cause someone somewhere to not go through what they went through for no reason than to satisfy
out-of-control local law enforcement's need to use their tasers and snap on the bracelets at their whim.
