The Enduring Mystery Of Beverly Jarosz

Jan 18, 2008 | Posted by: roboblogger | Full story: Free Times

“Monday, December 28, Bev and I got up about 8:30, 9 o'clock. We had breakfast and then washed dishes from the night before.”

Looking back, it seemed that Beverly Jarosz had sensed that Death wanted her. A vague sense of impending danger first stirred in the summer of 1964, around the time the 16 year old received an anonymous present ... via Free Times

The Beverly Jarosz murder had a profound affect on me when I was about 10 it happened and it was actually the first real terrible time I realized bad things can happen. The news stories went on for days. Her mother was on Dorothy Fuldheim and I distincly recall Dorothy pointing at the camera saying "we will find you!!! the next knock on your door will be from the police". This just has to have been done by someone she knew. It would be a tremendous relief for this tragedy to be solved.

I was 9 years old living in Cleveland Heights when this tragedy happened and it was the first time I experienced a sense of fear. I'll never forget seeing the headlines, and I couldn't get Beverly's face out of my mind. I was a paper boy at the time and was always frightened delivering papers at 6am when it was pitch black outside.

This must have been done by someone she knew and there's no reason this cold case can't be solved. It should be reopened and the original suspects should be reinterviewed.

I went to school with Jarosz, she was a year ahead of me. I bought all my books from her. I wish they would relook into it and solve it. It would be wonderful for the girls who went to school with her.

Jeannie...I was wondering about Barbara Klonowski - I think she was my piano teacher at Willoughby Fine Arts in 1970. I never realized this when I was her student and did not until the book by John Stark Bellamy. I saw her picture and it just had to be her. What a strange co-incidence for me having been so profoundly affected by the murder. Some of the poetry Beverly wrote was so ominous. I just wonder who did this and how they have eluded capture all these yearsl

I was seven years old at the time and grew up three streets away from Bev. Its hard to believe there were no witnesses, but the typical Polish attitude of not wanting to get involved would have prohibited a realistic investigation. There is a suspect now living in Isreal named Schulte who once came to our house to see my older sister. My father took one look at him and bounced him into the street. Klonowski was a real idiot not calling for help when she realized something was wrong. What can you expect from a Pole?

Why would that be wonderfull? Who cares where you buy your books? Since when is "relook" a word?

Nice that we resort to criticizing grammar - Elanore - and the fact that Klonowski is Polish - Carl. And where do you get that Polish people typically do not want to get involved??

This comes from the response the Police Investigators got from many of the neighbors. In fact, a woman living on the corner of Turney and Thornton was more concerned about the death of her Parrot. John Stark Bellamy wrote in his book
"death ride at Euclid Beach" about a neighbor who lied about seeing a suspect simply to get his name in the papers. The Polish tendancy of being "slow witted' is nothing new, as can be seen in Klonowskis' behavior. Cleveland Police were asked by the Coroners office to investigate the crime scene due to Garfield Hts inexperience with such situations....

The above co-resoponence was under a pseudonym and was intended for my wife, who is interested in such matters. While I expected her to find it within the hour, its been several days. While I was czeching for a responce she entered the room and advised me that: I am a low leve W.O.P. who has no right to question the intellect of any Pole. I have been advised that she will break her new boots in on my face it I dont "fix" this. Therefore I will not co-resond with this forum under any name again. You have my regards. But no pity....

klonowski's lived on oakpark blvd in garfield hts klonowski has a brother 'paul' who was 18 at the time this occurred...his family sent him to europe shortly after the murder--he remained there for several years until things cooled off
he is the suspect most suspected by the cleveland detectives who were asked to investigate the murder
the klonowski family were quite well off for the area--mr klonowski was a big wig at a bank and mrs klonowski was a piano teacher--paul klonowski was very 'artsy' and different than others his age

I remember Barb Klonowski's older brother. It is suspicious that he was "sent" to Europe right after the murder. I have heard for years that the police "knew" who killed Beverly...they just didn't have evidence to convict.

I grew up in Cleveland Ohio and remember very well when this murder occurred. I was only 8 years old but it still haunts me to this day. My cousins lived on Oakpark and we were all terrified of something happening to us. I can't help but hope and believe that after all these years, the police will be able to find out who the murderer was. Every neighborhood has its "Snoopy Sam". It's long past time that they spoke up.

I was nine years old and living in Canton when this happened. This did scare me back then. I remember watching Channel 8 (WJW), and them reporting it. I remember the picture of her that they used, she was so pretty, and that increased the tragedy. Who would want to kill such a beautiful young girl. Every year or so, the TV news would repeat the story, and that always made me cringe again, the killer was still out there, and no on was safe. I've thought about the murder several times since it happened and wondered if it was ever solved. I hope someday it is

The entries about Paul Klonowski are interesting. I never heard him mentioned before, just Stanley, described by Beverly as, misunderstood, troubled, and disturbed. Paliyan suggested a cover-up. If Barb and Paul's father was a bank "big-wig," his money and connections make a cover-up a real possibility. I have read elsewhere that the police need to take a closer look at Barb, suggesting she might be the murderer. I now agree she needs to be looked at more intently, not necessarily as the murderer, but rather as someone who might have intimate knowledge of the murder. I rejected Barb's account of her actions outside the Jarosz' house the day of the murder, because I would not have behaved in the manner she says' she behaved in. I would have been a lot more inquisitive and inquiring. Especially knowing someone was home. Could she have been a lookout? What about the Klonowski's? Does anyone know where Paul is and what he's doing? What are the Klonowski parent's up to? And what is Barb's status?

In addition, James Renner's, Free Times Press article, mentions a phone call to the Jarosz home, answered by Beverly, minutes before she was murdered. The caller identified himself as Stephen Stackowicz, ask to speak with her father, a fact duly noted by Beverly on a pad near the phone. Ask by the police, who Stephen Stackowicz is, the father didn't know anyone by that name. Further in Renner's article, he mentions the Raymond Stackowicz Justice Center in Garfield Hts. Is it just me, or does anyone else find it strange the re-occurance of the Stackowicz name on the Justice Center? Who is\was Raymond Stackowicz, and what's his connection to Garfield Heights and if any, the Jarosz murder case? Once again the thought of cover-up and with-holding pertinent information to help solve this case come to mind

No one else has mentioned this and I've read nothing suggesting it but does no one else think this is the work of 2 killers? Unless the killer was a 4 armed, 4 handed wonder, how could one person strangle her and stab her AT THE SAME TIME?! Common sense would say there were 2 killers; one strangling her while the 2nd killer stabbed her.

What leads you to believe the killer strangled and stabbed Beverly at the same time? The Coroner ruled the cause of death as strangulation caused by the rope that was looped around her neck. If the killer was unable to strangle and stab Beverly simultaneously, he\she could have inflected the 40 stab wounds after strangling her. That said, two people could have been involved in the murder. With the Garfield Heights Police Dept.’s )GHPD) interest in Paul Klonowski, Barbs’ older brother, Barb’s suspicious (in my opinion) account of her actions the day of the murder, and the Klonowski’s sending Paul to Europe shortly after the murder, could indicate the involvement of Paul and Barb. Barb and the Klonowski Family could be covering for the actions of Paul. Also the GHPD’s renewed interest in John Paliyan as the murderer. Department detectives recently interviewed Paliyan’s sister wanting to know if she had disposed of the murder weapon for her brother. So, while I don’t feel two people were actively involved in the physical act of murdering Beverly, the intimate account of her murder might be known by more than one individual.

To Oakpark Neighbor; how do you know Paul was their prime suspect? And why did the Cleveland Detectives and not the Garfield Hts. PD\Detectives feel Paul was the one? Do you know if anything is being done now about Paul? What’s Barb doing today?

To Neighbor in 1965; when you said Paul was sent to Europe,“right after the murder,” do you mean, the next day, the second day, 3 days, 5 days?

To rather not say; your description of Mr. K’s actions on 12-28-64 and after, definitely portray a man who has something to be concerned about. Do you think the call came from Mrs. K? Do you know if Mr. K received the call before or after Beverly’s murder was discovered? With the available liquidity at the bank and the time-off, Mr. K could have easily financed a quick getaway. You say, Bank of Cleveland? Which Bank of Cleveland, Central National, Society, National City? What location did Mr. K work at? John Paliyan, suspect, spoke of a cover-up. What do you think?

My problem is with Barb. According to Barb’s story, her account puts her there at the time of the murder. A PD Staff article dated 10-26-08, reveals Beverly’s grandmother (Vanek) told police she was on the phone with Beverly when the teen cut the conversation short at 1:15 p.m. saying said she had to open the door for her friend. The Cuyahoga County coroner said Beverly died 25 minutes later.
Who did Beverly open the door for? Barb, or who?
Where was Barb from 12:30 pm to 1:20 pm? Did anyone see Barb at Beverly’s house besides Barb’s mother?
Barb said that after she left Beverly’s, Gary Grayson drove her the rest of the way home after she had walked a bit. What does Grayson have to say about the ride home? What’s Barb’s status today?
It’s hard to believe the Webers, or the Zumgulises, or anyone on Thornton Ave., didn’t see something

I dont know, but anyone with a funny name like "Zumgulis" might be more prone to keep to themselves. Its possible that the Webers told the Zumgulisis that the dupacheiwics knew more than what they told of the boy running down E-112th in his shorts.
