Delaware Mall Implements Teen Curfew

Full story: NBC 10 Philadelphia

Delaware's largest mall is cracking down on teens. Unless they're with an adult, teenagers won't be allowed inside the mall on weekend nights.

This is the most idiotic thing I have ever heard. I'm 27 years old and remember being a teen at the mall. How do teens impair anyone from shopping? I shop quite often on a Friday or Saturday night and have never had a teen impair my shopping. I think its age discrimination if I've ever heard it. Obviously the mall has security so if there is some sort of disturbance occuring at ANYTIME with ANYONE of ANY AGE they would be dealt with at that time. Maybe you should ban the elderly from the mall unless they are with a younger individual because they might walk slower and impair my shopping. Ridiculous!

I think everyone hung out at the mall as a teenager. If fact as a teenager, I used to hang at one mall while I worked security at another. Seems like the mall management is trying to blame the teens for a slow economy.. Not saying the teens are angels.. but who ever was?

If it is as portrayed, that a growing number of teens without an adult are causing a situation in the mall which is turning away shoppers because of fear of bodily injury, the mall should impose a temporary curfew until the un-chaperoned teens prove that they have been reformed

<I thought I sent this already but I didn't see my post, if its on two times.oh well>

Personally I think it’s dumb to put an age limit for teen in the mall. Kids tend to spend more money at malls. Where us adults have more worries about where and how to spend money. I stopped going to the malls since the gas got above 3.50… It’s not the kids that are keeping people (adults) away. It’s less money to spend. The last I have checked. Teens 16 years old can get a job and work so I would think the money they work for would be good to spend… I am from in PA we had a mall called the MacDade mall. I worked in that mall for a about 7 years, Well the Mall did a way with the arcade then the movie theater and then the music store FYE left. And the teens stopped going to the mall. Two of the stores I worked at the sales started to drop. As a retail Mgr, I have seen what sales I have lost since the teens stop going to the mall. In today’s age, people have less money to spend. And I would not kick out anyone that could spend money. Let me put it this way. If 50 kids went to a music store to buy a music cd at 15.99, that would add to 799.50 a night and if we just add just the weekend Friday and Saturday sales for a month 6,396.00… I also have another point, Teens can join a fire Co. at 16 years old as a junior firefighter and be involves in other things in the community but yet if the same teens wanted to go to the mall they will be stopped at the doors. I just think it’s a bad ideal.

It sounds like the losers that have posted here so far have never been to the mall in question.

Christianna Mall has become a drop off point for all the irresponsible parents in the entire Northern part of Delaware to leave their kids at.

It is basically in the middle of 3 major highways. The only way for a teen to get to it unsupervised is to be purposely left there by an adult, if they didn't drive themselves. A kid with a parent like that is going to be no good and as someone who does shop there I'm glad they will be turned away. Good riddance.

You obviously haven't been to Granite Run Mall. It has become over-run with nasty pre-teen and teens. The parents drop them off like it is a free babysitting service. They gather around all of the benches and they hang around the entrances smoking a blocking the way of customers. It creates a very threatening environment for parent with little children and older shoppers. I have no problem with small groups of teens going to the mall to shop or get something to eat. We need a better security presence. I don't mean rent-a-cops that just get laughed at by the teens. The malls should hire police officers to enforce the no loitering and harassment issues. Let the well-behaved teens stay and make the troublemakers move on.

Best thing that could have happened.God forbid parents might actually have to spend some time with their kids. Its not up to the mall to keep these kids inline. Its the PARENTS responsability.

In Delaware, there is very little to do without spending money. The mall however is nice, especially during the summer, air conditioned, and a nice place to walk around. However, I no longer go at nights, and neither do my friends or anyone that i know for that matter. It has become, not overrun with teens, but overrun with too many unruly teens. The last time I was the mall at night was in January. I went with my six year old. A woman pushing a baby stroller got into a shouting match with another woman who was with a group of people. This happened right in front of us. It started verbally and then led into physical fight. I do not know the age of these people. But they did look very young. The girl who was pushing a baby stroller looked about 15. I refuse to have my daughter around people of that nature. It is a shame that a group of bad apples spoils it for the crowd. But from what I have seen. There are a lot of bad apples that hang out there. Too many... Security can only do so much. But looking at it from there point. Hire security, and they break up fights, but the damage is done. A fight broke out. Christiana mall is trying to prevent fights, not break them up after they occur.

This is great, they need to do this at King Of Prussia mall as well, and fights do break out and these teens some of them at least do act recklessly.
Now I guarantee if those of you who think this is "idiotic" wait until one of these teens decides to do something stupid like bring a gun to the mall, or attempt to rob you of your goods, then you'll be all about having a curfew.

Theyre just up there hangin around, go hang out at your friends house or a park if you wanna hang around, a mall is a place to shop, not lolly gag, damn rascals lol.

They were just talking about this on WMMR and some people called in about Christiana in particular. One guy said the last 3 times he had been there on a Friday night he had seen full out fist fights between girls. Sounds like the teens there really add to the ambience.

Hang out at someone's house or go walk around a state park or something. Gee, how about a movie?

BTW - teens aren't buying CDs anymore. Unless they have huge allowances, most kids under 17 don't have a ton of money to spend to make an impact.

Okay well get more secruity guards to do their job and to keep the kids from fighting its that simple....dont take this away from them...I hope the mall goes bankrupt for this....screw the mall ill never go to the mall again

I, as a shopper, agree w/the new rule 100%. I've never in my youth ever thought of going to the mall to "hang out". Either stay home, get a job or go hang out at a friends house. These kids come here because they are bored and/or they can basically do things they normally wouldn't do at home.(i.e smoke, curse, make out). The mall is not a babysitter. Parents should be more involved in knowing where their kids are and what they are doing. Don't think that just because you are hanging out at the mall, you can't get into trouble.

Why don't you volunteer to be a security guard and see if you don't get your butt whooped.

I agree with this rule 100%. I've been to Christiana Mall a few times and from what I saw, most of these teens go there to specifically cause trouble...it's where they go to fight eachother. It's nuts and there's no reason for them to go acting out like that.

Some of them look like clowns, coming into the mall dudes wearing make up thinking they're in some type of rock band lol

Yeah, I agree. KOP is getting out of control too. It wouldn't be such a big deal if these teens would just learn how to behave in public.

Daily Horoscope for June 4

Pisces

Relationships are kind of shaky under this Lunar Cycle and you may even get the distinct impression you're heading for a major showdown with a certain someone. Although this feels like a crisis, don't let panic or desperation push you into decisions you would normally steer clear of. You may think you've reached the end of the road, but this isn't a good reason to go off the deep end and make drastic decisions. Proceed with caution!
