Righto - I'm not too far from the New Madrid Fault. Another really big one (or ones*) there could (will) do severe damage from Memphis to St. Louis. Might give our buddy in Indiana quite a bit to think about too, if he's in Indianapolis or south of there. In fact, I believe Levar Burton has written a novel about such a future occurrence. And, this is in the heart of the Bible Belt, so, no respite for us because of (or in spite of) religious beliefs!Don't forget about the New Madrid fault either.
Nor the fault line running through Charleston, SC.
Next big quake could be worse than 1906

We have felt them here in NE Ohio. Twice that I know of. I don't know where the epicenter was though. |

*If the last major episode is a guide, we might get THREE big ones in succession, with powerful aftershocks lasting a year or more.
Very good (and scary) info. here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Madrid_Earth... Hard to imagine an earthquake in Missouri that cracked sidewalks in Washington D.C.(!), but, it happened, and will again... |
|
If you know the dates, USGS would have the info. Probably are smaller local faults. Biggest one we've had for many years was about a 5, which is worrisome in itself. |

Sept. 25th, 1998. 5.2 magnitude. Found it :) thanks http://www.dnr.state.oh.us/ohioseis/earthquak... |

In March 1964, We had a 9.2, and it lasted for 5 minutes. The aftershocks were as high as 7's. There are photos at the link below. http://www.aeic.alaska.edu/Seis/ |

I apologize. I shouldn't have said that. It just seems to me that we as Americans are too hard on ourselves sometimes. Instead of enjoying and appreciating our great wealth (primarily due to oil), we feel guilty and try to blame ourselves for every natural occuring event in the world. Oil has done great things for humanity in the past 150 years or so. I'm sure some will argue it has done bad things as well, but there is no denying that oil has reduced much suffering to mankind. |

OK, Sparky,./...... what would you do about it? If you move to Hawaii and buy a home with a volcano in the back yard, and go on vacation and your house burns down, who are YOU going to blame? Your cruise line travel agent? No one got hurt. Yet. But they never learn in California, Louisana, Mississippi, Florida.....on and on. If people remain in places they KNOW there is danger.....Like every year if not more often? I call it "natural selection" and "let nature take it's course." I live in a place where IF there was going to be dangerous conditions they are\ probably, 500 year flood zone, and occasionally high winds. Blows roofs off. But I am aware of the risk and accept them. If I die during a 500 year flood event or my roof falls on me during a storm, too bad, so sad, But I finally got the frisbee off the roof. |
Did you feel the quakes yesterday? Hope all is well.:) |

I don't know who you are responding to, but here goes..... I really don't think that people don't care about others. What they are probably saying is pretty clear. Why are you in favor of continually rewarding stupid, or preventable damaging behaviour by remaining where you are, FULL WELL KNOWING that a catastrophic event is just around the corner and UNPREDICTABLE? Then you and your family or kind, EXPECT for the calvary to come running in with water, food, and blankets. Oh, let's not forget your FEMA trailers and medical care. Please read what you wrote again. If you KNOW it MIGHT OR PROBABLY WILL HAPPEN, no one is innocent. Innocent dictates you have no knowledge of the benefit or consequence of your action or no action. They are pretending to be ignorant. And that's where I stop caring. |
