1 If you like the good old boy network of governing then come on to TN. Like 10% sales tax? Come on to TN. Like supporting a bunch of welfare people through your hard earn money? Come on to TN. Like waiting around for days, weeks and yes sometimes months to get a handyman to call you back? Come on to TN. Like picking up other peoples trash in your yard because they are too lazy to put it in a trash can? Come on to TN. Look around on this board and you will find that I'm not the only one that holds this opinion of TN. Like lousy schools and drugs for your kids and a meth factory next door? Come on to TN. I moved to TN from Florida, one of the biggest mistakes I have ever made. Its all family here and if your grand-daddy wasn't born here you will always be an outsider and shunned. In Florida just about everyone is a transplant and share that. Our best friends are in FL. Oh yea, like to go to church twice a week and twice on Sunday? Come on to TN. You would think with all the churches here they would be up standing people, hahah, the divorce rate and illiterate and illegitimate children rate are the highest in the nation. Come on to TN where trash isn't just litter on the road. |

Kelly: Sneedville/Hancock County is a beautiful area and home to many local artists and craftsman. Despite the fact that my mother-in-law lives there: I think the people are very kind and welcoming.
The area is underdeveloped though, which means limited employment opportunities and a notable lack of community programing. You'd have to commute to shop/work/play: so unless you're specifically seeking space, privacy, scenery and a Wal-Mart free zone: I would recommend the neighboring cos if Claiborne or Hawkins. And yes, Tennessee does have a rather high sale tax rate but no state income tax. http://www.discoveret.org/overhome/ http://www.hancockcountytn.com/ |

Thanks Angie! We are looking for wide open spaces with "privacy, scenery and a Walmart Free Zone". This sounds like what we are looking for! |

Kelly let me translate for you:
"The area is underdeveloped" = you are out in the middle of nowhere with no power, no police protection and no paved roads. Also no jobs, no shopping and no good resturants. "many local artists and craftsman" = many hippies living on welfare. Long nasty beards and smelling clothes. "but no state income tax" = YET. Before you move up here watch the movie Deliverances with Burt Reyonds. Or Easy Rider with Fonda. That will give you an idea of what your facing. |

Sneedville is in Hancock county. It's very remote due to lack of main roads and being seperated from everything by mountains. this is an obvious plus and a minus. Jobs are few so everyone commutes long distances. unfortunately unemployment, welfare and drugs are plentiful ruining what could be paradise. It is a beautiful area and the county has a come a long way in the last decade compared to what it was in the past that gave it it's reputation. unfortunately it still has a ways to go. Law enforcement is one of the main problems and meth is pretty popular. |

Just like Kelly, I am from Florida and looking to move out of state. I have always loved TN and the mountains. I read the remarks about the hippies and paying for everyone else to be on welfare, I guess that is in every state, because in Fl we pay for all the illegal immigrants when they come over. You'd be surprised all the benefits they receive from the government. I am looking for a nice piece of land for a few horses at an affordable price. I also have a daughter in Elementary School and want to have her involved in Girl Scouts, 4H, and equestrian shows. Does anyone have a good idea what town in TN would best allow me to do this? Thanks for your help.

I moved to Sneedville, Tn 3 yrs ago , I admit it has been a big change, but let me tell you this, The cost of living in other states compared to this would have broke me and my husband, we live on a fixed income because he is disabled , we live on 150 acres in kyles ford, taxes under 500 a year and we pay for our phone and electric, anyone who wants to try can go north , fight the weather and pay the high bills, they also have crime, drugs and hippies , I like the peaceful way of life better each day .watching the deer run freely thru my yard and horses everywhere. Sandy try checking out property in Kyles Ford its beautiful on the clinch river and alot of new things are happening to upgrade the living standards ..best of luck to you

two cents, i think you know how to go back to fl. you found your way to tn (lucky i guess) so bye bye pal
|
|
|
TO two cents
i would never move to another state, city , etc and then complain about it like you do, you need to move back to fl where you came from |

I live in Sneedville, and I love it, there are drugs everywhere, this is not the only town that has drugs. There is less crime in this city than most. Sneedville is not as developed as Gatlinburg, but is just as pretty, and the people that live here are nice. So, don't let one person change your mind on moving to Hancock County.

Sandy and Kelly: Follow your hearts. Sneedville is beautiful, but the distance to get to "town" is a bit much for me. I live in Bean Station and absolutely love it. I was born in NJ, lived in Ft. Lauderdale, spent a lot of my time in Rogersville, and would not trade any of them for where I am. This is just my opinion and what suits my life.
Bean Station is great for the things you were speaking of Sandy: girl scouts, 4H (the camp is not too far), horses (we have 5) and there are horse shows all over the area. The schools here are pretty good. I am involved in PTO and try my best to help them out. I also teach preschool here. |

hi i was just wondering how the schools are,(honestly) if you dont live in sneedville or never have then please dont tell me what you have heard about the schools. i want to hear from someone that actually knows. also to respond to a few other post about welfare and drugs, well if you can find one single state in the u.s. that does not have that issue then please tell us and we may all move there i mean come on!i visited sneedville and everyone was very nice and i guess not everyone would like it there but it would depend on what you are looking for. the movie deliverance the movie is NOTHING like sneedville, this comment must be comeing from someone who has never been to sneedville or just seen the movie and thinks all towns that are remote and quaint are scary. Yes the people do look at you a little strange when you go there but it is maily because they dont see new people often and they are friendly when you talk to them

I live in Hancock county. Have been here since 2001. My husband was born and raised here.
My stepson attended school here from 2001 to 2005. He moved to Ky with his mom his 2nd year of high school. Oct. of this year he came back to Tennessee. When i went to enroll him as a senior at the high school, they Refused him!! Why? Because if they accept him he will be 1/2 credit shy to graduate with his class due to Tn.`s credits to graduate is 28 credits. Ky`s is 24. He would have 271/2 credits at the end of the year. Which Becky H. at the school told us would give Hancock county a bad grade with the states "no child left behind law". So the school refused him. I spoke with the superintedent Mike A. and was pretty much told the same thing. I e-mailed Gov. Bredeson, I have e-mailed the Dept of Education and even spoken with the legal dept with the Dept of Ed in Nashville. Nothing is happening. My stepson has been out of school over 2 months now. Not because he wants to be. He wants to Join the Marines, but thats not looking good. Hancock co is a beautiful place to live. But unless you have lots of money to buy your way around, you would be better off in another place. Bean Station is really pretty, any of Grainger county is. And much closer to jobs. I can prove all i have said about the school doing us the way it has done us. I have all of my e-mails. And i have a 17 year old with a GPA of almost 3.0 denied his education in Hancock co.

And BTW my stepson has never been in trouble in school or out side of school. He`s a pretty good kid.
|
|
can you have him enrrolled as a junior? if so do that because at least then he would be in school. |
