It would take legal action at this point to stop this mess. And for the record, Dudley's is on U.S. One. You guys are talking about Baldwins. And yes, why not that huge site at the old Food Lion, with waterfront docks, access to a private marina (Also apparently for sale) They could have trolleys to the Beach and with a Marriott as an anchor, the North Causeway would clean up and could be actually very nice and thriving and take some of the pressure off Flagler. Prediction: sometime in the future Jessamine and Florida Avenues will be one-way streets from Pine eastward. Woe to the non-commercial property owners on those once beachy lanes!

Yes, that would be ME...I live on Florida Ave. I hope your prediction does not come to fruition....at least for 20 years!!!! I probably won't be around at that time!
We (residents) have tried so hard to get the "city" to look at N. Causeway. The pressure from the businesses on Flagler is too great for the commissioners/mayor to handle. They are afraid that N.. Causeway would not benefit them (businesses) enough, I guess.
I cannot believe that anyone truly believes a 3 story hotel fits on Flagler Avenue. BUT...it is all about money.
As I stated earlier....I truly believe "they" will find this to be a mistake but it will be too late to "unbuild" this monster.

I have seen city commissioners in far bigger towns than ours roll over on their backs like little puppies when the big dogs hit town. And what is pathetic is that Hampton Inns isn't even a big dog. They could have held out for a Marriot or even a Hilton and then set the tone for at least a four star environment. I'm against every development in this town since they had dogs in the Bamboo Saloon but if you're going to be a whore, be a high priced whore. Sold us short as always but if you go to a commission meeting it is obvious what level of joy to expect around here from now on. The bad news is that I've been everywhere, man, and this is it. This is still the best little whorehouse in Florida.

You are so right. The CRA and the city commission has grabbed the first group to show interest in building a hotel in NSB. They did not wait for a more suitable group to show interest in this particular site or try to interest this developer in a more appropriate site.
I think a classier, smaller "inn" might have fit in on Flagler Avenue; not a three story,112 room hotel (called "inn"). Many have said that we already have a three story hotel on Flagler (referring to the Riverview Inn). That inn is truly a small (12-15 room)"INN". It sits facing the river and fits into the quaint character of NSB. I think it is like comparing apples to oranges to compare Riverview with this 112 room "inn".
I understand the need for a hotel in NSB I just think it is shortsighted to give in to the first developer who shows interest in a particular spot. Especially when there are sites much more suitable. IF this Hampton Inn is built it may actually hinder NSB from attracting other (classier) chains in the future.
As far as the city commissioners are concerned....only Commissioner Hathaway questioned the wisdom of going ahead with this developer at this site. Commissioner Hathaway and Commissioner Richenberg were the only two commissioners to vote against this proposal.
I will and hope others will, at the next election, show the mayor and commissioners how important THEIR vote was on this as I will vote/campaign against them as they voted to bring this monster to our small two lane beach access road!!!

clambob???
What do you think???
The NSB City Commission passed the ordinaces to re-zone Flagler Ave. property AND accepted the PUD for the Hampton Inn. So....do you think it is as was stated at the start, "a done deal"?
The $$$, Chamber, Realtors and merchants won this round, I guess.(Much to the detriment to the community,I think).
ALL seem to be hellbent on "economic development"...don't know how a hotel with from 5-30 employees will really affect the "economics" of NSB.

It is obvious this government doesn't care about real progress. They sell us out to the service industry. Yes, Mr. Tourist, no, Mr. Tourist. Can I shine your boots, Mr. Tourist?

What about real jobs? Tax incentives to manufacturing companies who don't need our most valuable real estate to do business?

They should have stuck to there guns and kept the idea on the North Causeway where it belongs. A few decent restaurants along there and you end up with a nice walk to the beach. The hotel could have a shuttle to the beach and further cut down on Flagler traffic.

We have been officially discounted. A few businesses will profit immensely from this and the rest of us can only shake our heads, watch another chunk of our heritage disappear forever, and imagine what Flagler could have looked like with the right businesses there.

According to the developer and city...there are no parking problems and Flagler CAN handle the traffic. Obviously they don't come to Flagler Ave. often!!
I think it is going to take much more away from the beauty of the town than the $$$ it is going to provide the merchants who have fought so hard for it.
