New Rochelle

Does anyone know why New Rochelle is called
the "Queen" City? And is it still referred
to as such? Just curious!

Yes NR, is called the Queen City of the Sound, because of it coast line which is about 9 miles. long, the Sound is because of Long Island Sound which is apart of the NR coast line. According to NR the coast line is less its the irregularity of the coast that makes it that much longer.

There is much to be said about the coast line, there is Glen Island Casino, Ft, Slocum, Davenport Park, Hudson Park. The inlets took you back to Long Island Sound and lead you to NYC.

It's my home town..... You can check it out on New Rochele . com..... The city hall web site has a link to how the city became to be. The french came, huguenots, I can only assume that is why there is a Huguenot St. There is a photo gallery of pics from back when. My parents told me alot about the city as they choose to live there and why since they had moved from RI. And that Curious, was a very long time ago. New Roc city was houses Can you imagine that.

Tell me Curious, why the interest in NR??? I am just curious. I am not the editor, although thanks for the vote, I live here as a tourist in MD. I will gather further info and post it.

I am unsure who coined the name "Queen City of the Sound", but at the turn of the 20th century, New Rochelle was a huge summer destination for wealthy New Yorkers. In addition to beaches close to Manhattan, it had amusement parks and a Main Street lined with upscale shops. This was the city's heyday, and I believe it was at this time that it earned it's title.
Proud residents still call it the "Queen City".

the current residents have ever heard of the

Does anyone remember Robert Halls clothing store.
Use to go there in the 50's to get our school
clothes. Right down the street from what is now
New Roc. Those were the days!

Yes I do remember, now do you remember Johns Bargain Store and Lynns on North Ave near Anderson St. And I agree those were the days..... Parade on Thanksgiving Eve., Arnold Costables and Bloomingdales window in holiday figures that moved, fake snow and oh we could stand there an gaze!

I remember Lynn's, Robert Hall's only by name.
My grandmother worked in Arnold Constable, though I don't remember actually being in the store. My grandparents owned a cleaning store on Main St, so I remember enough of the great stores and people who lived and worked downtown. I have to say it was a great place to grow up.

Yes, it was a great place to grow up.It appears I might be older, but you remember Main Street, the stores so many Woolworths, Grants to name a few, and meeting people along the way. Folks knew one another. I am glad my parents decided to live in NR I have many fond memories and enjoy returning to visit with friends. So sorry Main St is not what it use to be.

wow! you have all brought me way back. I grew up in NR and went to Blessed Sacrament Grammar school and High School.
gone now are the shops like "Woolworth" and the 3 movie theaters.
It is sad to see how far they have slipped.

I loved going to Chock Full O' Nuts for cream cheese and jelly sandwiches on raisin bread. And who could forget the Yellow Submarine sandwich shop....it sucks getting old

Anything I ever needed in life was at Jacks'
Army and Navy store on Main st. next to the Town
Movie house. What happened to all the Army and
Navy stores? I sure miss them.

Yes! Jack's! they were next to Allen's Sport Shop

Thanks for the memories!! I went B.S. Grammer and St Gabriel's High. Ahhh Woolworths, lets not forget about Grant', Lieberman's, for those wonderful uniforms. Window Shopping as we walked down Main St. Right about now I could go for a Yellow Submarine Sub. So many wonderful memories make me wish I was home. But sadly times have changed and so has the city, gone are those stores or yesterday.

We could know one another ya know! My brother went to B.S. High and grammer as well.

Yes the Ship Ahoy and how about the Fore and Aft, which if I am not mistaken as at the same location on Division St........

It's true. All the Army Navy stores are gone. Grants and Woolworths reminds me how mixed it actually was back then, even with all the more expensive shops. Liebmans and Talners are still there, as is IB Cohen and Merry-Go-Round. Faina's Donuts still holds a special place in my heart. Hopefully they will stay and the city will really turn the corner.
