I like the saplings at the curb with the wire cage around them. I was born in 1954 so I saw those trees when they were full grown and shading the streets. Fire Hall # 3 is there in the background, boy how I remember how the clock used to sound off the hours with a clang of the bell. We used to know they time by that bell. I remember running over to the fire hall after the engine left for a fire to check the ticker that punched out the code for the location of the call and look at the charts to see where the engine went and if it was close, we would run there to see the action. Who can forget seeing Eddie Saliba run to the hall! One time I got in his way and he picked me up and gently tossed me into the grass by the sidewalk. Eddie didn't play when it came to getting to the fire.

This would have been 1 year after Ken High was built and moved to Ridge Ave. It looks like you can see the building on the right side of the picture looking up Ridge Avenue.

I grew up on Ridge Avenue right in the white house across the alley from the firehouse. We lived there from 1967 till 1980. It was such a great neighborhood to grow up in. It looks a lot different now.

You were younger than me so we never met but I agree it was a great neighborhood and a great place to grow up. I remember the Ken High Majorettes (before they became the Valley High Majorettes) used to practice their routines in your ally when I was very young, late 50/s or early 60's.

What a great shot!! I went to Ken Hi in 1942 and 1943. No place like it. I regretted moving to Springdale until football season - I played left-guard. I regularly visited my grandmother and always passed the school on my way to her house. I just checked to see who posted it - It was me. What a memory I have! I better get back to my writing before I forget what I was writing about.

I lived in this neighborhood from 1979 to 1985 and from 1988 to 1993 I think those were some very transitional years, I live in a neighboring community now and only go into New Ken when I am passing through...every time I pass through this area it makes me very sad.
