1 Maybe community service would be good. Give em 150 hours of painting vandalized walls over. Give them a different perspective on the matter. Maybe they'll realize th enext wall they spraypaint might be the one they're made to fix! |

Those that once had pride either died or were run off by the garbage they forced upon the city. Blame the government who has run business off by the taxes, not American business. Between the unions and the government great companies have moved much production off shore. |

Well, first off, there are some of us who still have pride in our city. I've been part of the anti-graffiti movement for twelve years. Some years we get off lightly and are able to keep up with vandalism as it occurs. Other years, like 2007, these "paint punks" seem to crawl out of the woodwork. I just wish they weren't referred to as "artists". There is no art in the vandalism they perpetuate.

No way. NB is still 60% White with a White (Republican) mayor, White police chief, overwhelmingly White police force and White (11/15) Common Council. |

I would like to see New Britain make some LEGAL graffiti spots so graffiti artists can go practice there and not on private property. Of course that wont get rid of ILLEGAL graffiti but it will surly reduce it. Keep it in mind.

Legal walls work for a short span of time because police initially get the cooperation of the crews. Unfortunately, outsiders come in and the next thing you know the graffiti spreads to the surrounding neighborhood. Who can blame the residents when they get mad and demand that the legal walls be taken down?
Most of those "little boys" of LBBK aren't so little. They should call themselves the Loser Boys Bombing Krew. |
||||
Here's a better idea, why don't you take your own hard-earned money, buy some land of your own and build your own wall? Then you can invite all of your bomber friends over to create your "art" legally. Why should the towns have to spend taxpayers' money to support your activity? |
||||
|
Anonymous: I have a better idea. Why don't you post your address and invite the taggers to spray paint their "art" on it. If you feel that graffiti adds value to one's property then you should have no problem selling it for what you think it is worth.

I am glad that the mayor is cracking down on this graffiti problem. I am a taxpayer in New Britain, with small children, and I cannot stand to drive around looking at that mess. It makes the city look ghetto. Their punishment should be to stand out there for hours cleaning it up and picking up all the trash on the streets. Maybe then they will respect other people's property.

i think graffiti is an artform and i been writin graff my whole its sad when u see kids go to jail for a harmless thing like graffiti.who are to say what is art or isnt..i do agree that most of these kids are teens who are tryin to look kool more then actualy improve there kraft...but u have to look at it from both sides...i write graffiti because i love art and i get an amazing feeling from creating art and putting my name on a wall...i have lots of freinds who paint and graffiti will never stop..its a sad sad day when people hate on art..i think graffiti on trains,underpasses,legal walls is all good...i would consider only paintin legal walls but there arent enuff of them and when there are they are painted over and over again and a piece u do is up for a day if that..thats why kids search for that ultimate spot...or places where people will see there work...sum kids paint because they dont wana sell drugs or they dont wana drink or smoke,or steal..graffiti is my anti-drug..i was a trouble maker got arested for numerous things..and i think graffiti saved me and kept me from relapsing and using drugs..when i needed to vent i would pick up a can of paint and create art...there are stores in newhaven that sell graffiti supplies and make artwork..when will u people open ur eyes..u did with skateboarding now at every highschool there is a skatepark maybe u should consider building a legal wall next to that park...hmmmm maybe that would work!!!im a taxpayer i have a fulltime job im not a criminal i just love to paint! in naugatuck CT they are building a legal for kids to paint..maybe this is finally a step in the right direction!GRAFFITI IS NOT A CRIME!!

Graffiti is the media of the poor, a tool for social emancipation.

Here's an idea. Get a nice canvas, paint your damn graffiti, and if it's that good, people will come and buy it and then you'll be a real artist. The city has every right to crack down on this crap. It makes the city look nasty and ghetto, and middle class people don't want to come into town. I like art, and a true artwork of graffiti can be nice, but it can't be allowed to run rampant like it is now. And you certainly have no right to tag other peoples property.

what is art?
|

Just bcuz some idiots tagged on the wrong places dont mean every other artist is like dat. some people in this culture actually have rules on where to write.
@ Mark: You sir, are a fkin idiot. building a legal wall here is the smartest thing you can do. if Nb keeps up like it is, more of your stupid pocket change is gonna keep goin towards cleaning all that up, so why invest in a damn wall instead of a stupid ass piece of metal sitting right downtown in front of a fkin bar. |

I have a son that is a muralist... He uses aerosol cans to do his art, and does canvas, legal walls, and areas where he has permission. It's sad he gets looped into a group of individuals that do vandalism of this type. It's very easy for people like Mark above, and the police to just point fingers and blame anyone with any type of association to graffiti, legal or illegal and label them as vandals. It's too bad people ruin it for the good ones, because there are muralists and graffiti artists out there, that do not vandalize property in the fashion that these individuals have, but obviously Johnny law doesn't see it that way. A face, or an arrest in the paper is just another notch on the belt to them.
