Mayor John Barrett III is asking the City Council to take by eminent domain a small parcel of land behind the former H.W. Clark Biscuit buildings, which is blocking its new owners from accessing the back of the ...

IT'S SAD WHEN PROPERTY CAN BE TAKEN FROM SOMEONE AS IN THIS SITUATION DESPITE THE FACT THEY MIGHT NOT WISH TO DO ANYTHING WITH THEIR PROPERTY.FACT OF THE MATTER IS THEY OWN THE PROPERT.IF THEY WISH TO SIT IN A LAWN CHAIR AND WATCH THE SUN SET SIPPING LEMONADE...THEY SHOULD HAVE THE RIGHT TO DO SO AS LONG AS THEY ARE BREAKING NO LAWS.IT'S THEIR LAND !! LAND LOCKED OR NOT..

quote from the mayor (in the article):

"Bringing in affordable housing is just one aspect," he said. "It also involves the reclamation of a historic building ...."

just the day before, the mayor had no concern for 100-year-old historic properties on main street he wants demolished (again for the same developers' gain)

another quote:

"This is a land-locked parcel -- the owner can't do anything with it, " Barrett said. "This project gives the working poor and the retired poor a decent place to live. This project is not a subsidized housing project."

not subsidized huh, then why is the majority of the project being paid for with grants and tax credits? and for rents to remain at that level for long, it WILL have to be subsidized!

didn't arch know they needed this piece of land when they studied the project? now the city is going to step in and do the developers bidding.

what a disgrace!

I would like to commend Mr Melillo, a neghbor to the North, for his interest in the welfare of his Massachusetts neighbors. It is comforting to know that someone would be concerned about the affairs of his fellow citizens regardless of where they may reside. One would be fortunate to have such a charitably motivated person as a friend- would they not??

Martin Niemöller said 'First they came for the Communists, but I was not a Communist, so I said nothing. Then they came for the Social Democrats, but I was not a Social Democrat, so I did nothing. Then came the trade unionists, but I was not a trade unionist. And then they came for the Jews, but I was not a Jew, so I did little. Then when they came for me, there was no one left to stand up for me.' Of course this was said about the holocaust, but it seems to ring true for eminent domain as well.

the mayor seems to have quite a cozy relationship with developers lately.I can't believe this will not be section 8 housing ,which seems to be the new goldmine for N.A.I quess after you tear down your Main Street for urban renewal dollars, there's not much left in the way of an economy. And I wonder if this is part one ,part two being,(since the mayor also seems to be so cozy with The Porches,)taking some property in the Bracewell and Houghton Street areas where working and middle class people now live.I would like to see the City Council insist on seeing complete documents on these projects so that they actually know what they are voting on.

yea, go figure! and where does the city come up with a half million to buy and maintain a church complex thinking they're going to "flip it" in the face of an ever downward spiraling real estate market? what in hell is the mayor and city council thinking? i'm going to try really hard to rationalize the teacher layoff and budget cut rhetoric we're about to hear and reconcile it with the cities role as a real estate speculator. who's looking out for the taxpayer? wtf! all i can say is, arch street development better follow through on their intention to purchase the notre dame school. good luck boys.....

Enema Domain is a better word considering the pittance that is paid the owner

Just like the funding for people that was spent on bankrupt bars and eateries

Fairness is a rare commodity

For your information the so called working class people who lived where the Porches is now were the stero typical welfare rats and we are sick of these type many of whom come from the socialist paradise of Vermont. What is with this Vermont? Maple sugar and cheese plus toothless tattooed long haired shabby looking bums seems to be the letter of the day.Why don't you worry about nude people wandering around Brattleboro?

Thanks so much for the compliment. I hear they have nice coal mines in Kentucky, Ohio, and Utah.

China has the best though, maybe he should go there and gets some ideas.

Mayor asks council to use eminent domain.

Just a question, has he ever ask for something, and been told "no"?
