Why are the farmers allowed to drain Cane River and most of the water draining on the road and ditches like it dont matter. People spend a lot of money to own land on the river what gives them the right to just drain the river dry and most of them dont care the water just drains everywhere they should have to pay a fee. People in other states dont even have rivers to drain. Also these drilling rigs are draining all these bayous dry for free amd nobody cares when they can just drill a well. So who getting paid to stay quite about this issue.

Well, considering that supplying water for the farmers was what Cane River's intended use was to begin with, it's not that surprising. What I have a problem with is all the landowners along the river using it to water their lawns. Those yards aren't contributing to the economy of this area like those farmer's fields are. At any rate, this WAS the original intended use for Cane River.

Well you got a point cant argue with that but if u pass down 494 hwy by bermuda bridge that farmer got the water running for two days in the ditch and across the road not even touching the farm and they just letting it run like it dont matter.

Well only selfish people would get upset for the farmers IRRIGATING their crops. Have you been outside lately and realize how hot it's been? They are trying to protect their crop from burning up since that's their income and livelihood. It's easy to sit behind a desk or have an average job and criticize farmers but you have no idea how tough it is. My father was a farmer and after helping him when I was growing up made me realize how many things have to be done in order to produce a crop. If I had to choose between farmers pulling out river or people having plenty of waterfront and boat rides? I would choose farmers all day.

you are a child of a farmer, you are suppose to think that way. What if you have invested $250,000 in a house to enjoy a river that doesn't exist? I think the farmers should do whatever it takes to make their income, people should be able to enjoy the river fishing, skiing or whatever. Cane River needs flow then you could have the best of both worlds. Won't happen...TOO MUCH RED TAPE....that's just the world we live in these days!

Then maybe "they" should go ahead and build those pumps to take water from the Red to put into the Cane. Don't see why they don't go ahead and implement that. It would be a win-win situation.

They drain the Cane to an extent where it's useless for recreation and looks like a giant ditch running through town and you have the audacity to say we're being selfish?

In order to have the oxbox lake that is now Cane River, it had to be dammed up when the Red changed course. Since the Red River is a navigable waterway, any works done on it come under the auspices of the Army Corps of Engineers, I think. At any rate, there are plans underway to start pumping water into the Cane from the Red, but it has to go through all the bureaucratic red tape. Or it may have been blown off BECAUSE of all the bureaucratic red tape. So, yes, the Cane was dammed up just so the farmers whose fields USED to border on the Red would have water for irrigation. Learn your local history before you make any more "smart" remarks, lloll. Your ignorance is showing.

I hate to break the news to you, but daming off RR wouldn't make the water magically disappear just like Chaplains lake has never gone dry.

One of the few things still made in the USA. The corn raised is mostly for feed for mills (chicken feed) or for hunters (deer feed) or other animals who eventually end up in your freezer. So - next time you are griping about your precious river being low, take a stand and go without underwear and BBQ for a while and then see how you feel.

Plain and simple the farmers have a right to do what they do but they arent conservative at all. They are very invonsiderate toward the water supply they go over board.

Hate to break the news to you but Chaplains Lake has water pumping into it 24-7 Thats why they dredge the north end every couple years. In 100 degree weather you lose an inch a day and the farmers are using a lot of water. And it's less then what the people pumping out of it year around. And when the river was damed it was for a place for the farmers to get water from, not for fishing boats, ski boats or any recrational use.Because there were none of those type boats around.I hate the fact your pretty little yard is turning brown poor you.I would rather see farmers make a living.I live on the river and when it gets too low I'll take my boat and fish/ski else where.

The river is a part of Natchitoches now its important to everybody in lots of different ways. Its not just all about farmers to drain it dry like they did last year. Ok water your field but they waste the water and let it drain everywhere.
