BREAKING NEWS: Ex Manhattan Beach cop transferred to face murder charge

Just got off the phone with the head of the parish jail in Natchitoches, La.

Shawn Shelton, the former Manhattan Beach cop turned kidnapper and child molester, was transferred yesterday from his Nevada prison cell to the Natchitoches jail.

Shelton is charged with killing 19-year-old Justin James in October 2005. Prosecutors contend Shelton drugged James with a combination of Xanax, morphine and cocaine in an effort to sexually assault him. The drugs killed him.

Shelton once accused his fellow officers and chief at Manhattan Beach of sexually harassing him with anti-gay slurs and comments. He was once a rising star there.

No matter what happens in Louisiana, Shelton, 41, will likely spend the rest of his life in prison. He already is serving 35 years to life for kidnapping and sexually assaulting a 14-year-old boy in Las Vegas in 2006, about five months after James' death. He kidnapped the boy at a bus bench, drove him out into the desert and assaulted him.

Calvin McFerrin, chief of the Natchitoches Parish jail, said that Shelton arrived about 11 p.m. Thursday. He will be housed in a special area of the jail because of his background.

Shelton is a convicted child assailant, a former cop, is gay, and is HIV positive.

James' mother, Lisa, who fought to get someone to investigate Shelton in her son's death, told me she is grateful he finally is in Louisiana. Shelton will be in court on Monday.

"After 3 years I can't believe it," she said in an email. "Me and my family will be there on Monday."

That's the gist of it. I'll have the rest in a story later.

Thank God and the family of his victims are in my prayers.

This is the first I have heard of this. I have been trying to keep up with the progress of the case. But after 3 years it begins to make a person wonder if anything will be done. I am very pleased that this case is now under way. I hate it for this family right here during the Holidays. But it will be a Blessing to get it over so they can try to move on with their lives. My prayer too goes out to the family.

So I read in a news article it will be the spring before the trial will get underway,Is this true?
I guess it will be a toss up on which Judge will handle it.I know its been a long 3 years and will be a rough new year as well.

The arriagnment was made Monday. They stated that the Trail would be in March. He pleaded not guilty. But that is nothing out of the ordinary.
I was told they don't want alot of publicity.(not family) Well do they have to worry? It has been none much here. I can speak for that family, It has been a long hard 3 yrs. And Yes I don't know how much better it will get. I am sure when Justice is served it will help some. Nothing will bring Justin back but at least the family will get a little peace and everyone else that he is not on the streets. I don't know any real details. I think it is too early to know too much. Continue to pray for the family. I heard it was really bad Monday for them.

Do you mean the authorities do not want publicity? It was only in reaction to publicity that Shelton was ever brought back to be arraigned.

I am only a friend to the family and I dont know everything but I was told that maybe his Attorney didn't want it in the media. well of course not. You are right the media did take attention but not the media around here. Channel 12 in the beginning but the Anchor that followed the story moved. The Daily Breeze in Los A. has followed this from day one. This is a big story and there in't anyway they can keep it completely out of the media. The media really needs to get in there and find out why Natchitoches let this man go and this Family has had to fight for 3 yrs to get him back. This should be the big story! As if their jobs had been done this man wouldn't have went on to get other victims. Justin James Murder was before the Crime in California and Nevada. But as if he would have been check they would have seen he was charged with forging perscription drugs. Impersonating a law Officer and so on. Natchitoches failed to do their job. This is where the media should be! WhY!

Good question. I believe my late father's principal abuser worked the same scheme at least three times on other victims and is still free to do it again. When the system works we should should let it work in peace. But when it fails, the public needs to discuss the reasons why. Problems don't fix themselves.

The public only wants things like this put away and never to be reminded. But The James Family and Others are reminded everyday of their lives. They just simply never dreamed of the truth being found out!

I have emailed people at the Town Talk to try to bring attention to this case. This guy is a scum bag and gives gays a bad name.

Aaron this case is very big. He is now a Ex cop. Ex movie Producer, Pedofile, convicted child moslester, HIV positive, forged perscription drugs, impersonated a law officer and now wanted for Murder. This may not be all but this is all I can pin point at the time. Mr Shelton should come clean and pay his price. This is all anyone wants is just to see Justice. It would be nice for Natchitoches just to say, Look we messed up! we let this man go. But I am sure it want happen.
Maybe they have learned from this case. It can come back and bite you!

I for one think the public needs to be made aware of what was let in this town. I hope from now on the officials of Natchitoches will be more careful. I do hope that this family along with the others will get the Justice they deserve. It will not bring back your child back but it will assure you that no one elses child will be made a victim.

The proof is in the puddin...Shelton was never convicted of forging prescriptions, or any other crime in California. He's not a pedifile. The case in Nevada is being appealed as there are a lot of things that don't make sense like him driving the boy home..they are beginning to think it was a prostitution thing if anything as legal age in Vegas is 16 and the boy was 16. As far as the boy in Louisiana, Shelton will never get a fair trial there. Hell the paster is the judge and you don't even have a court secretary?

I feel bad for the family of the kid but no peace will come when they know Shelton didn't do anything to that boy. We see it all the time; kids trying drugs and going overboard.

A fair trial will be far away from Natch. As a straight cop who knows Shelton as well as a lot of other cops from different agencies, we know the hard times he went through with Manhattan Beach and that gay bashing city. I'm going to call his family and see what they can do to change jurisdictions.

No one's perfect and that means the kid there as well.

No I'm not in traffic, I'm in patrol. Another thing, they said in your paper that Shelton is being tried for Murder? You can't try for murder unless its premeditated. You can get maybe manslaughter and not even negligent.
