Why Don't Black Folks Tip

NPR report.
A study finds many waiters and waitresses feel that black Americans generally tip less than restaurant diners who are white. The study, by a researcher at Cornell University's School of Hotel Administration, found that blacks tip on average 20 percent less than whites. In addition, restaurant workers of all races dislike waiting on black people because they assume the tips will be less no matter how good the service.

One cannot use food stamps to tip--

The pickiest people to wait on, nothing makes them happy, work you like a dog and leave nothing. Once I had a black couple both order t bone steaks both drank top shelf margaritas but when tip time came she told me money was tight. Thanks alot!!

Because they think people owe them.

Maybe because tipping is not a requirement. I think it's stupid anyway.

I don't tip because society says I have to. All right, if someone deserves a tip, if they really put forth an effort, I'll give them something a little something extra. But this tipping automatically, it's for the birds. As far as I'm concerned, they're just doing their job.

I'm very sorry the government taxes their tips, that's messed up. That ain't my fault. It would seem to me that waitresses are one of the many groups the government screws in the butt on a regular basis. Look, if you ask me to sign something that says the government shouldn't do that, I'll sign it, put it to a vote, I'll vote for it, but what I won't do is play ball. And as for this non-college bull I got two words for that: learn to type,'cause if you're expecting me to help out with the rent you're in for a big surprise.

I think it's a cultural difference, I don't think the majority of black households instill a strong sense of personal responsibility in their children. I think that accounts for the high crime rate and lack of parental guidance also.

Of course that doesn't apply to ALL.

You are really stupid. We are not responsible for tipping. The only thing we are responsible for is paying for the things we order. Blame the business not the customer.

Why not tip fast food workers? They do the same thing. This is why tipping is stupid....

why dont white people tip me everytime I fix their car, or change their oil? Oh thats right thats why my employer cuts me a check. Dont blame black people, its not a law that ANYONE has to tip. Blame your law makers that say someone can base your pay on money that you dont even know will be there, or dont take a job as a waiter. And I know people that make big money off tips, so maybe they arent deserving. Thats all you see on here, black people this and white people that, guess thats what you teach YOUR children. How does this make your life any better, discussing this?

No one is forcing you to patronize a sit down restaurant, they are however expecting you to be a responsible consumer and pay for a service you receive, without being forced. It's called integrity, obviously a foreign concept to you!

I dont have to spend a dime of MY hard earned money on anything I dont want to. Make sure you tip for black people and yourself next time you are in a restaurant, if you feel that strongly about it.
