1. NEVER CALL. Many times, the workers are very busy and your phone call is interrupting them with their work or interrupting paying customers. If you are too lazy to actually GO
TO the business, they may see you as too lazy to go to work.
2. Scope out the place. DRESS NICE and GROOM yourself. When you go to inquire about open positions, dress a step above the employees. Make sure you do not reek of marijuana, cigarettes or anything else offensive.
3. Speak with available employees first, they may be able to give you an application and a good word. Do not automatically ask for a busy owner or manager.
4. Go to the place of business YOURSELF. Do not send a friend or family member to pick up your application, unless they will be doing the job for you.
5. Go ALONE. Do not go with another person or a group, employers see this as being too co-dependent. If you need someone to hold your hand for you, you most likely will NOT get hired.
6. Speak correctly and concisely. Do not use slang, foul or offensive language.
7. Do not argue with, insult or offend anyone who is working there. If the business is open to the public, do not argue with, insult or offend any of their customers.
8. Fill out the application YOURSELF. Fill it out COMPLETELY. At two places I have worked at, we were told NOT to consider any incomplete applications. DO NOT leave anything blank. Do NOT mail the application. Dress nice again, and go drop it off at the place of business.
9. Again, DO NOT CALL to "check" on your application. If you are curious, dress nice and follow up IN PERSON at the place of business.
10. Make sure your availability is suited to that particular place of business. If they are busiest in the mornings, make sure you are available to work every morning. If they are busiest on the weekends, make sure you are available every weekend.
I know it is hard to find a job here. Hopefully this will help at least a couple people. At my current place of employment, we get over 100 applications per week. Show the business you really want and deserve a job, then set yourself apart from the rest in a positive way. Good luck!
