Should Prostitution and Drugs be legal and regulated?

Yes, most definitly!

I haven't decided about some drugs, but I do think marijuana should be legalized...regulated and taxed. From my note on the other thread you already know I'm in favor of legalizing prostitution. Talk about legislating morality!

I can't imagine why our Legislators refuse to legalize prostitution. It would make it much safer for them, our legislators, who pay these working girls. Why is it that the "johns" almost NEVER get arrested? If they weren't willing to pay for the service, the service wouldn't be there. Oh that's right, the cops wouldn't dream of arresting the likes of David Vitter, etc.

I can't afford to pay for either of them so make it legal. When I do finally get a raise I can find something to spend it on if there is anything left after taxes.

Or Eliot Spitzer, or Jimmy Swaggart, or Charlie Sheen, or Hugh Grant or.... |

"Working girls" in Nevada get regular health checkups and medical monitoring.

The widespread propaganda that illegal drugs are "deadly poisons" is a hoax. There is little or no medical evidence of long term ill effects from sustained, moderate consumption of uncontaminated marijuana, cocaine or heroin. If these substances - most of them have been consumed in large quantities for centuries - were responsible for any chronic, progressive or disabling diseases, they certainly would have shown up in clinical practice and/or on the autopsy table. But they simply have not!

The physical effects of alcohol and tobacco are about as dangerous as most presently illegal drugs. Again, the government could regulate it and tax it; would take the drug dealers off the streets. To decriminalize drugs (at least marijuane/cocaine, as I mentioned I'm undecided about some of the drugs) would free up prison space for other offenders whose crimes are not victimless.

It is frequently stated that illicit drugs are "bad, dangerous, destructive" or "addictive," and that society has an obligation to keep them from the public. But nowhere can be found reliable, objective scientific evidence that they are any more harmful than other substances and activities that are legal. In view of the enormous expense, the carnage and the obvious futility of the "drug war," resulting in massive criminalization of society, it is high time to examine the supposed justification for keeping certain substances illegal.

I wouldn't necessarily want people running around stoned on heroin or tweaking on crystal meth legally, but marijuana at the very least ought to be legal. They could probably get away with legalizing cocaine. They need to just tax the living hell out of them, along with prostitution.
At least if you legalize prostitution, you can require hookers to go in for STD testing every couple of weeks. |

The San Francisco Coroner has reported that infections from contaminated intravenous injections were the only cause of drug-related deaths he saw except for occasional deaths from overdoses. He confirmed the inference that clean, reasonable dosages of heroin, cocaine and marijuana are pathologically harmless.

1 Scrap the nonsense of trying to obliterate drugs and acknowledge their presence in our society as we have with alcohol and tobacco. Legalization would result in: 1. purity assurance under Food and Drug Administration regulation; 2. labeled concentration of the product (to avoid overdose); 3. obliteration of vigorous marketing ("pushers"); 4. obliteration of drug crime and reduction of theft crime; 5. savings in expensive enforcement, prosecution and incarceration; 6. and significant tax revenues. Effort and funds can then be directed to educating the public about the hazards of all drugs. |

Great ideas. I think a lot of the same applies to prostitution, as well. I agree totally. |
We should look at the fact that a relatively low budget public education campaign has resulted in a significant decline in US consumption of both alcohol and tobacco during a period when a costly and intensive campaign to curtail illegal drugs only resulted in their increased usage. Is there a lesson to be heeded? |

I WOULD NEVER CHEAT ON MY WIFE - MY FAMILY IS TOO IMPORTANT TO ME. I DON'T THINK I HAVE THE RIGHT TO TELL YOU WHAT YOU CAN AND CANNOT DO WITH YOUR PERSON AS LONG AS IT DOESN'T INFRINGE ON ME. PROSTITUTION, TERMINATING A PREGNANCY, DRUG USAGE, AND ENDING YOUR OWN LIFE IS A PERSONAL ISSUE AND SHOULD NOT (IN MY OPINION) BE LEGISLATED BY OTHERS. TAKE THE BLACK MARKET AND CRIME OUT OF PROSTITUTION AND DRUGS AND OUR PRISONS WILL HAVE ROOM FOR THE VIOLENT OFFENDERS. LET PROSTITUTES HAVE A MEDICAL PLAN AND POT HEADS GROW THEIR OWN DOPE. I DON'T THINK WE NEED A GOVERNMENT SPONSORED NEEDLE PARK. DRUG USAGE SHOULD NOT BE ENCOURAGED BUT THE INDIVIDUAL'S RIGHTS SHOULD.

What is nutty about it? Letting people make their own decisions about their lives, instead of letting the government control our personal decisions? Yeah, totally crazy in a country that is supposed to be free. |
Legalizing drugs would immediately relieve the pressure on the prison system, since there would no longer be "drug offenders" to incarcerate. And, since many drug users would no longer need to commit violent or property crime to pay for their habits, there would be fewer "real" criminals to house in the first place. Instead of building more prisons, we could pocket the money and still be safer. |
