I've never been to the detention center. Are there any hoodlums out there that can describe what it is like? What is the daily routine? Food? Entertainment?

I don't know about the local center. I can tell you horror stories about the winnfield prison, though.

Well, as a person who worked constructing the Winn Prison as an Engineer in the mid 80's...let me tell ya...it's quite "nice" as prisons go. They have a library, medical center, auto shop for learning a trade, outdoor basketball courts, baseball field, a cantina(for drinks and snacks), a T.V./rec room in each "dormitory" and a community laundry room. The big drawback I saw was the cell...8' x 14' with 2 bunks and a toilet...worst of all...the cells were PAINTED BABY BLUE!!!! LOL!! And of course razor wire EVERYWHERE!!

Hehehe, yep, expat. They're still baby blue.
Having never worked at any other prison, it's quite possible that WNC is nice, as far as they go. Though the reason I think your family members like it so much is that nobody seems particularly interested in enforcing the rules. I saw prisoners constantly wandering in and out of restricted areas with the full knowledge of my superiors, openly trading contraband, things like that and I was told to leave them alone. But that didn't bother me nearly as bad as the two incidents (in the very short time I worked there) where a sick man rolled over and died because medical refused to see him. |
No plans in the near future. LOL I just want to know what our money is paying for. If all the inmates just kick back, watch TV and eat good groceries like people say, it might be worth throwing a brick through a window or something. |

The guys up at WNC make their own uniforms, grow a decent part of the food they eat, clean the prison, stuff like that. Hell, they even do their own maintenence, under the supervision of staff.
I like that they use jobs as an incentive for behavior. Every able body starts working in the fields, and with good behavior they earn the priviledge to move up to better jobs. Working in the garment factory, the kitchen.. the really trusted ones get to work in the machine shop. They enjoy that. |
