David Vitter introduced a bill last week to drug test people in government housing saying it would save the taxpayers money by finding these people and providing them with free drug rehab.

http://vitter.senate.gov/public/index.cfm...

I believe his idea would only cost us more money and not solve the problem at all.

If you were part of congress and were trying to reduce government spending by cutting out one government program which one would it be and why?

I thought Vitter would be more interested in the disposal/cloth diaper controversy!

But charging only $1.35 per head of cattle to graze on public land is abhorent.
Govt is too big

Public housing. All this program has done is make people lazy and more dependent on the government and at the same time driving up the price of housing for others. In large cities it has contributed to the establishment of slums. Eliminate all programs which encourage people to depend upon others so much.

Couldnt have said it better myself! I know im getting sick and tired of the people that do not contribute to society living better than the ones that work for a living.

Cut the Department of Defense. You'll save a $1.2 trillion a year right there.

Now this is a good point. You cannot help the children and not help the deadbeat parent. Problem is, the deadbeat parent knows this and uses the child to full advantage regardless of the damage done to the child. This doesn't apply only to people using the government but also to people manipulating family members with their children. These idiots are not idiots at all. They have all the things that the working class has without the work.

So, what do we do? Commodities rather than cards would be one answer. The children are well fed but not with whatever the parents choose to buy for themselves but with more wholesome nutritious food that could be purchased at any store. Of course, you would have to count on the store owners and workers not wanting to work the system to get a little extra for themselves as many Americans who gripe about the system do.

We have a problem because we believe the beggar can also be a chooser.

You can't cut out the entire DOD. That would not be prudent.

You can't receive free daycare unless you have proof that you're working or in school. And I know people that are on government programs that work their ass off everyday and still don't make enough to make ends meet so they have to rely partly on the government. Do your research before you write something like this!

Proof of work? All they have to do is get a part time job. They can 'work' a few hours a week and get daycare. Then, they get grandma to open said 'daycare' and pay her for watching her grandkids. I see it every day. Add to that the crazy checks (seriously, ALL 5 of your kids have ADHD?) and they make more money than I do.
To be honest, the welfare system giveaway doesn't come close to the money we throw overseas. That's where most of the waste is.

I guess you are referring to foreign aid. Only about 1% of the national budget goes to foreign aid. Cutting it out completely wouldn't even be noticed. www.pbs.org/newshour/rundown/2011/03/foreign-...

I must say that I am on housing at this time and I do recieve partial help with my daycare. I pay 60% and they pay 40%. I go to work 40 hours a week, make 16 an hour, and still need help. No I do not have a boat load of children if thats what you are assuming. I cannot receive foodstamps because of my income but thats ok. My point is, YES there are some people who are on the system that are using it, and NO there are some people who actually need it. Even though I work hard, I also have two children to feed, cloth, bills to pay, etc. I do feel as though random drug testing should be done because there are some who do nothing but abuse the system. But it should not be eliminated by those who are actually working and trying to do something with their lives. I feel as though with housing programs you should have to meet a certain criteria: work a certain amount of hours, drug testing, and anything else needed to improve, not cut the system.

I do believe that there should be a picture of the person on the food stamp case, on the card. This would keep druggies from selling their card to others.

Not to be rude but you make 16 dollars an hour and can't make ends meet? I don't understand this. Before I remarried I made less than that an hour had 3 kids, a house note, nice Toyota vehicle and many more bills to pay and didn't receive ANY form of public aid. I'm not saying there aren't ever instances where help isn't needed but sometimes it's just a matter of priorities.
Again I'm not saying this is your case ( I don't know you) but sometimes people take the money that should go on bills and put it elsewhere and then want money for what could have been paid out of a paycheck for those bills.

I don't know how housing works but I find it hard to believe that someone that makes 16 dollars an hour would qualify.

I've seen this a lot. I buy what I want and someone else pays for what I need. It's why a person driving a Cadillac Escalade can argue for free healthcare for his family. If you can't squeeze by on $16.00 and hour we are in trouble. Part of the problem is the new necessities. Cell phone, satellite or cable and the internet. As someone on the other side of middle age I remember the rotary dial, three channels when the weather was good and computers that took up entire rooms. The government supplying cell phones and HD converter boxes is a good example of how much too far the welfare state has gone.

Well first you are being a little rude, but I dont really pay attention to judgement. And yes I do receiving housing and that is the ONLY ASSISTANCE I RECEIVE!! I do not receive foodstamps, wic, FITAP, or any other program there is. I pay rent, gas, electricity, car note, insurance, groceries, clothes and shoes for my children, and myself as well and do all this as a single mom. Im not saying you were not a single parent, but I am. With that being sad, I do not feel as though me receiving a little help that I actually need makes me lazy nor depending on anyone to do anything for me. Regardless of what you did then, it doesnt change what I need help with now. Everybody situations is different, so maybe everyone on this forum need to think about that before they judge or assume.

Daily Horoscope for June 4

Gemini

It's a red letter day for relationships under the Lunar Eclipse in your house of significant others, because you're facing some important and far-reaching changes to some of them. The pressure has been building since the Gemini Solar Eclipse on May 20. f you've known for some time that things aren't working out, you're about to reach a crisis point as becomes obvious that the present situation can't continue much longer. The coming New Moon in Gemini on June 19 will see progress of one kind or another, though this unusual eclipse cycle will have a far-reaching effect. You may have to be cruel to be kind, or more forceful than you would like, in order to get your point across, but do you really have any viable alternative?
