On September 29, Gene Cranick of Obion County, Tennessee called 911 to report that his home was on fire and his pets, three dogs and one cat, were trapped inside. Instead of responding, firefighters from the fire department from the nearby city of South Fulton informed him his home "wasn't on their list" and he was on his own.
The problem?
The county does not have a county-wide firefighting service, but South Fulton offers fire coverage to rural residents for a fee. Mr Cranick had forgotten to pay the $75 yearly fee.
Though he told the fire department he would pay whatever was required to have the fire put out, his pleas went unanswered. According to MSNBC news (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/39516346/ns/us_ne ...), South Fulton's mayor said that the fire department "can't let homeowners pay the fee on the spot, because the only people who would pay would be those whose homes are on fire."
Mr Cranik's pets should not have to pay the price for his owner's forgetfulness or the local government's policies. Tell Obion County Sherrif Danny Jowers, the main contact person for Obion County Office of Emergency Management, that letting pets burn to death over $75 is unacceptable.

I agree, and I find it unacceptable that they even stop to take the time to look see if Mr.Cranik paid his dues, during an event in which a few seconds can make a difference in life or death.

I only hope those that were involved in allowing his home to burn, leave this world held tightly in the jaws of mans best friend. >:)

What about the fact that they waited 2 hours before calling 911?? Are they to assume no responsibility for a situation they created in the first place??

Next time give ALL the FACTS before attacking the Fire Department or officials...

FACT. His grandson started burning trash then left the fire unattended to go in and take a shower.

FACT. The fire started a "slow burning grass fire"

FACT. They fought the grass fire for 2 hours with a garden hose before it reached the shed and trailer. Then they called 911.

FACT. The 3 dogs and 1 cat were LOCKED in the shed and they had 2 hours to get then out before the fire got there. In that 2 hours I could have moved out of the MOBILE HOME before the fire got there. Those pets should never have been locked in a shed.

FACT. Mr Cranick said on both local and National TV "I thought they would come put the fire out, even though I had not paid, but I was wrong." This tells me that he had no intention of paying until AFTER a fire. Just like he did for his son's fire 2 years previously. Incidentally, this was their 4th fire in 10 years.

And possibly the most important FACT of all is that it was a MOBILE HOME. Fires in a mobile home are generally unstoppable in minutes. Usually before any Fire Dept can arrive.

Now another FACT. The county commissioners established a county wide Fire Department in the 80's but the residents refused to vote for a tax increase to fund it. Opting, instead to keep the system that they had. The elected officials were following the will of the voters.

Also, the Fire Department did respond after his neighbor, who had paid the fee, called because the grass fire had spread to his property. They stopped it there but the Cranicks trailer was beyond saving.

Blame those who are at fault. The Cranicks, not the firefighters or elected officials.

Sorry, I was unaware of the details. I simply clicked on this thread (for I wasn't about to read all the pages)and thought this was something new. My mistake.:(

You are correct. They should be held responsible, as well.

Dee, the first post was made on this Forum Oct.4, 2010. It is very old news.
Somebody posted that the People built a new house quite awhile ago.

This was one of four State-wide Threads that had been used to discuss anything, but Politics, until the Trolls took it over and ran everybody off that wasn't one of them.

Sameo-sameo, nothing ever changes for the better on Topix, only for the worse.
Yes, they wouldn't leave me alone about the "eye", so I changed my Profile Pic. Now, they won't leave me alone about the "legs", either. Wait until I put up a pic of my "Boobs" and then, they can really jump up and down and holler! LOL!
Are you back in the States?

Topix probably wouldn't allow the Boobs, that why I haven't done it, just for pure spite! LOL!
I'm glad you're back and I hope you visit Topix often. I missed you!:)

Daily Horoscope for May 21

Pisces

It's a great day for fixing anything that needs attention now. That might be a dripping tap, a sick child, an unpaid bill or a miffed partner. However, you'll do particularly well if you need to sort out something connected with official or joint finances or red tape. You might be asked to help someone deal with a bureaucratic problem, especially if they're elderly.
