Hmm.. Will be interesting to see how this story turns out. MT. Juliet Police Deparment has a long history of jumping the gun and over abusing their athority.

This story clearly does not give all the facts needed to form an opinion. I'd like to hear more about it because the news never gets all the facts right the first time.

If the man had no weapon(s), couldn't the police officer be, by rights of fairness, charged with aggravated assault w/ a deadly weapon?

I see your point, but I think since the subject acted the way he did the officer acted in a proper manner. But I guess it all depends on what his department policy says. And it also depends on if it goes to grand jury or not and what those 12 people think.

Yes, if the officer acted unprovoked but if the guy was acting like the report says then the officer was probably on guard anyways. They guy seems to not have been cooperative and to reach into his car like that would seem suspicious. Will be interesting to see if he had a gun or something in the car. Can't wait for all the facts to come out. And I assume this wasn't the same officer that choked the guy last year?

Attacking the police and not the criminals is the second most popular activity in Wilson County.

good luck on seein that video they want even release any information to the family except hes alive they want even let anyone see him not even his elderly mom which is sorry as hell on there part.i beleive the officer could have took other measures considering they never really pepper sprayed him like they claim plus theres 2 diffrent reports about that one says cagle sparyed him and other one says spears did so which one was it, neither to tell the truth.backup was called before he even knew he mite need it oh but wait he fired at least 4 or 5 shots when cagle was at tailgate @ smith was at passenger door what was the point of shootin him when he wasnt that far away or better yet why shoot at him all upper body shots could have aimed lower did just as good since he was that close @ sprayed as they claim.he took 2 shots both upper body.i beleive cagle got a lil trigger happy.

I think in at least some ways it also depends on what the general public tolerates/allows.

Did it occur to the officer that the man, knowing the officer will ask for id, may have been reaching for his driver's license?

The lengthly criminal history referred to in in all of the reports is for simple driving violations, but that fact is not being brought up as the story would not be quite as interesting or justifiable.

It was just a matter of time. Cagle was a loose cannon as a dispatcher and no shock he would be involved in a shooting. Thanks again to Ted Floyd for hiring those that can easily be corrupt.

But why would he struggle and fight to go get an i.d? Since he had already found a crack pipe doesn't it stand to reason he was going back in an attempt to hide his drugs or for a weapon. He might have been high off his rear. The officer didn't have time to speculate. Either way the guy shouldn't have fought to get back to his truck...for anything! But I see what you are saying, he could have been going after anything, although in this situation it did not look good.

it wasnt a crack pipe they found i was there in that truck i know..... and both cops was close enough to taser him and they should have pepper spryed him BEFORE they shot him.. and damn WHY so many times and in the upper part... when popo cagle walked up you could just tell he was going to be a smartass young cop looking for trouble to get into to. someone must have pissed him off before he came on duty and took it out on us... but now all that matters is that smitty is ok and doing great..

remember back in the day when policemen were brave souls in possession of spines. back then they would wait until they saw a gun, and when they did they would put 6 rounds in a bad guy before he even had a chance to take aim. police today are wimps and cowards. nowadays cops are the chumps who got beat up in school or jocks with superiority complexes.
