What the report doesn't mention is that this man is an Iraq War Veteran with serious Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). The Veterans Administration let him "fall through the crack" when he was experiencing serious paranoia problems and having flashbacks from Iraq. He tried desperately to get the help he needed and even his family attempted to reach out to the VA directly for assistance, but were blown off. You might wonder why I know this -- it's because I'm his father. Unfortunately, my son's condition had progressed to the point where he thought he was back on the front lines in Iraq. He has NEVER been violent and was simply our "gentle giant" of a son. Our Veterans have and continue to willingly put their lives on the line to protect the freedoms we enjoy (and too often take for granted). They deserve all the support, caring and medical attention needed once they return from combat, not just for wounds that bleed, but for mental wounds as well. The mental scars our Veterans bring back from war don't vanish with medication, surgery or bandages....they take many years to heal - if ever. We owe our brave men and women the best medical assistance we can give them. I know because I am a proud Veteran too!
